Judo is used by a lot of cops because of how practical it is for street encounters. A drop onto concrete is not forgiving. Hell, my sensei often points out with Osoto Gari that if you do it too hard and his skull hits the concrete...you get the idea.
I wonder if you can apply a judo technique in a real life situation. And i don´t mean ne waza (obviously why, is not good fighting in the ground when you are on the streets). I wonder this because all the techniques i see depends so much on the gi that i´m really insecure. I mean, is not like taking a judogi and say "hey man, before punching me, please put this on". Don´t get me wrong, i´ll start judo soon but this makes me worry a little bit. Sory for my english
@GoobleCakes ..Judo is perfect for the street, everyone wears clothes so all you need to do is grab the attackers jacket or shirt, one throw and they are fucked on hard ground.
I belive Okawa talk english better than Jason or the other football player guy, wonder why they sub title him. Nice episode, it's too funny when they say "it's a real martial art" at the end.
Jason you poor fellow. You got your ass handed to you, stop being so cocky. Be humble, respect your opponent and most importantly stop talking out of your ass.
"My MMA background blah blah, my experience in blah blah...my speed and force blah blah..." Nobody cares, shut up and learn.
I just missed it, he only just won, I could have beat him, I am amazing, missed him by inches. Jason is a douche sometimes he cant of seriously thought he would beat him
I think the fight was pretty personal for Jason. After all, Judo won over Jiujitsu during the Police's selection for their martial arts. Jason wanted to prove them wrong. I know I would. Good job, Jason.
@Dominus96 Are you sure, i mean did you hear him talking about how he would just use his brute force/bull run to defeat him, witch basicly goes agaist the principals of judo.
If he had done a bull run any experienced judeca would have done a sacrifice and compleatly destroyed him.
Well in my opinion, 22-23 years of experience means JUDO is his life. You cant keep on saying Jason this or Jason that. Jason tried using his fundamentals too, just that he knows and feels the opponents momentum and C.G for years now. How about you guys fight that guy instead?
This show was recorded a couple of years ago. It wasn't until this past year when judo changed the rule that you could only do leg grabs as counters to throws. Before last year, lots of judo players would perform leg grabs for takedowns. Too bad they had to change the rules because kata garuma (fireman's throw) was one of my favorite throws.
when were these shows recorded? they kept talking about going for leg take downs, and please correct me if I am mistaken, but aren't leg take downs only legal in competitive judo as counters to throws?
Reading through some of the comments. Judo still has some striking techniques called Atemiwaza but they are only in the Katas (forms) and not in Olympic style Judo that is mostly taught. If anyone is interested in learning them find a place that teaches Kimi-no-kata and Goshin-no-jitsu (which they showed some of in the show) which are the self-defense Katas.
As a Judoka I thought this episode did a good job explaining Judo and its history, although some of Jason and Bill's pronounciation was atrocious. The last fight though wasn't much as Okawa really seemed to take it easy and even though Jason thinks he came close he was nowhere near his submissions. It looked like some of the randoris at the Budokan seemed more interesting.
Lol, i laugh when i read these comments of how Jason wouldn't have won, that he was nowhere near a triangle or just slamming on Jason. Lol they only did these martial arts in a week. Give them a break.
I find it funny how jason thinks he almost catches him a few times even with that triangle nowhere near on, and that he wouldent have been able to throw anyone in that dojo (fact)

WTF... The Judoka was crushing him from the beginning to the end. The match was over before it even began. Man... they do same shittalking on this show.
utarian, I totally get it. I did Judo when I was young and recently started again at age 34. My dojo teaches Judo (Tue, Thu) and Machado BJJ (Mon, Wed). There are plenty of people in my class that train in both.
Thats funny when he says " missed him by inches" looked more like a foot to me. Not going to get a flying arm bar on that fella. I'm sure jason realized that this guy was going easy on him.
The triangle wasn't very good. He didn't almost have him. His feet are backwards. Right foot should be under left knee in his position. With someone that big he would need to be at an angle - not straight on as he is. He also needs to cross his opponent's right arm across his chest. There is no almost in the way he executed this technique.
They are playing by judo rules because the show is about judo. If there is no progress on the ground (see my other post about the poor execution of the triangle) the players are stood up to avoid pasivity.
BJJ it´s have the same origins, Jutsu means technique or more violent way an do means way, so judo is a peacefull way to do techniques in the spirital way BJJ mean that I´m stronger and I can kick your ass, that´s why I like more Judo!!
Funny you should say that. Kimura was known to practice Tai Otoshi against trees. Of course that they wouldn't fall but then... when grabbing a person, just imagine!
IN fact the completest martil arts known and officialy comproved are russian Sambo, israli Krav Maga and brazilian Jiu Jitsu,, not 3 world' best but 3 most complete.
Depends on where you try. Traditionally and throughout Japan, in self defense Judo there is strikes. And you cannot claim one fighting style better than another. Many have tried, and many styles have had their moments of triumph and defeat. So once you think an art is superior, be ready to read about their many defeats.
It is all about who has trained more, has the better mentality and wants the win more. That's if both competitors have the same skill level. It is not the art, it is the artist.
But Judo was selected as the winner when they compared it to Jujitsu in Kano's days...
True, but that was back when it was "kano jiu jitsu", which was more like a well balanced Jujutsu than what we call Judo now. Also Jujutsu was a "scattered" art back then. There were so many styles, all so narrow minded and focused on only ONE aspect of the true Jujutsu that the samurai had. Like one only did disarms, another only did nerve strikes, etc, etc. The Jujutsu of today, well balanced from all former variations, would give a good fight. And judo is also different now.
this whole sport is stupid nowadays you cant grab hold of someones gi in a real fight it looks really stupid when they are bot holding onto each other like that id just be tempted to use strikes
its more useful than you would think. while its true people dont wear a gi normally these moves can be applied to shirts, jackets, basically any type of clothing.
as far as using a strike, the martial arts were about killing. while a strike would be useful now adays, it wouldnt work against armor.
the ring and real life are different things too, while in real life you would use both strikes and grapple, judo focuses on grappling, so that would be what is used in the judo matches.
Most throws in judo can be adapted for fighting without a Gi. if done correctly, in the right situation, the techniques can be devastating in real combat.. that is why judo throws are incorporated in military and police combat training.
Most practitioners of traditional judo (like me) study it as a sport and an art form and not really for real life combat applications. Go do MMA or join the military if you want to see Judo techniques adapted for real combat situations..
Seriously. I have been training with my friend in the Judo techniques of the Old Army and the Marine Corp, and I have whooped more than a few Army Combatives guys. Though I have had my butt whooped a time or two as well.
that sounds logical to me. i also heard of hwa rang do and it has joint locks, throws, and submissions as well.. but i will def think it over and i was also thinking after i get black belt in tkd to take kung fu. would you think that would be practical? so i could be trained in tkd, bjj and kung fu.
the best styles are wing chun for close quarters tkd for kicking muay thai for good knees and elbows boxing and karate and some kung fu styles like wing chun for good punching and karate for good open had strikes like shotokan. bjj for good ground fighting judo for good takedowns but being like bruce lee and using jeet kune do is da best
i have training in taekwondo and i want another martial art to add to my arsenal. one that has ground game and throws but i want one that works in the smaller persons favor. what would be a good combo with tkd?like judo or something?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu..there are plenty of schools that train throws and takedowns as well as the awesome leverage based Brazilian jiu Jitsu! Perfect for smaller guys. You need to know jiu jitsu these days..with MMA being main stream even your regular punk off the streets try and take fights to the ground these days because of what they see on the UFC! I bounced in bars for years and always used BJJ in real fights..plus I used to compete in Kickboxing for 17 years! Jiu jitsu is the best single art
Cause Bill is pretty scared maybe... But I think these martial arts require the person to be a more petite and fast. Not like Bill, he's cut out for boxing and rugby or American football
Have you seen Yasuhiro Yamashita? He is the greatest Judoka of all time and quite a big guy. Kimura as well. Size is an advantage where there is lack of technique. And neither of these two guys had good Judo technique. Jason's groundwork and BJJ background is useless against a good judoka so Bill should have fought since he has the size advantage but both their skill levels are the same.
I completed in Judo and honestly I rather fight a wrestler of my weight division than a BJJ person a few divisions lower. I would respect a BJJ person on the ground -- chokes and armlocks from a smaller opponent are about the only way an lesser skilled opponent is going to get me. Neither can likely throw me and honestly, I'll choke out any wrestler. BJJ is an unknown. Like Yamashita... I'd avoid the ground against a BJJ -- just in case.
Allright but as you can see, Judo rules don't allow that much groundwork so as far as throws are concerned Bill would have done a lot better. That's my opionion. He wouldn't have tried to take the fight to the ground so much and actually focus on getting an Ippon in stead of just falling to the ground and trying to win with Ne Waza techniques.
It's not about height or power as long as you have technique. But none of them had technique... not after a week! So I would have gone with the power guy. But I get your point. I won't reply anymore.
all martial arts need power. it's just that technique magnify's one's power to produce better results. it's also very hard to shoulder throw someone taller than you.
I practice judo too, but I actually rather face a BJJ guy in a judo match than a skilled wrestler. The wrestlers that I've sparred with have had quite solid stances and good takedowns of their own. Whereas BJJ guys were much easier to throw.
I would certainly agree a wrestler would be harder to throw and a BJJ harder to choke or armlock. Call it a wash in term of defense.
However, the wrestler's offense far weaker. He isn't trained to (full point) throw, choke, armlock, or pin (for 30). You pretty much have the entire match with only a fluke chance of losing even if the wrestler does what he does.
The BJJ can choke or armlock you without any special judo training. The judoka will lose if the BJJ guy does what he does.
Here's the thing, BJJ isn't as useful when you're not in a sport that has rules about downed opponents. If you're in a street fight, and you're a wrestler who can take someone down, you will fare much better than a bjj expert who can submit someone on the ground because of the fact that you can take them down and then stomp them and there's nothing they can do about that.
What? Why would BJJ be any worse with no rules than wrestling?
Stomp? That assumes you knock them down cleanly and you are standing. In Judo clean throws/knock-downs are possible, but in BJJ and wrestling... it is almost unheard of. Chances are you'll be in contact with each other when you hit the ground -- more so in a street fight where any of the three would hold on when taking you down.
And the BJJ can 'stomp' just as easily. 'Stomping' isn't something any wrestler trains in.
uh..lol. Wrestling and judo emphasize takedowns way more than BJJ, creating a stomping situation. You can stand up and stomp easily after a shoot or judo throw, and that's the end of the fight. In a sport with rules, you can't do this, so you have to either let them get up or play a ground game where BJJ excels. Take away the necessity of a ground game and you render BJJ less useful.
i love how he said he was off by inches but i say he was miles away

Thats funny when he says " missed him by inches" looked more like a foot to me. Not going to get a flying arm bar on that fella. I'm sure jason realized that this guy was going easy on him.
sunburstgibson 2 years ago 40
@sunburstgibson Yeah, he missed him by, like, 12 inches!
lslewis 1 year ago
The triangle wasn't very good. He didn't almost have him. His feet are backwards. Right foot should be under left knee in his position. With someone that big he would need to be at an angle - not straight on as he is. He also needs to cross his opponent's right arm across his chest. There is no almost in the way he executed this technique.
Chuikov23 2 years ago
that jason guy would have got the triangle choke if it had not been stood up. wtf

They are playing by judo rules because the show is about judo. If there is no progress on the ground (see my other post about the poor execution of the triangle) the players are stood up to avoid pasivity.
Chuikov23 2 years ago
alright i see it now i actually did that last class to a green belt in randori :) thanks
mmajunkie1000 2 years ago
i liked the almost had the triangle part xD
fail triangle just closed his legs not gonne get any advantage with that against a conditioned judo-chest...
MrDownunder123 2 years ago 4
Your right; it would have been interesting to see what Bill could've done. Jason spent way too much effort trying his jujuitsu moves (ne waza).

By the way, Yoshida (Judo) kick Royce Gracie´s ass (Jiu Jitsu)
LeonLaguna 2 years ago
Did you see the rematch with MMA rules?
nitro64876 2 years ago
BJJ it´s have the same origins, Jutsu means technique or more violent way an do means way, so judo is a peacefull way to do techniques in the spirital way BJJ mean that I´m stronger and I can kick your ass, that´s why I like more Judo!!
LeonLaguna 2 years ago
Actually Jutsu means art, not "more violent way". But yeah, I love JUDO!!!

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL TAI OTOSHI!!!
retardno002 2 years ago
i love how his narrative during the fight keeps saying how he almost caught him a bunch of times
but in reality the judoka probably saw all of his moves coming a mile a way

I don't mean any disrespect to Jason Chambers, but yeah I gotta agree...I don't think Jason was quite as close as he thought he was.

why wasn't the match over when the japanese guy got a nice uchi mata? the ref called ippon but they continued
garynotrashcougar 2 years ago
Because the match had different from usual rules. Three two-minute bouts, each bout ending if ippon is scored.

judoka was so superior, it must have been really frustrating. like trying to move a tree. and then the tree throws him like he was nothing.
bulldrumm 2 years ago
Funny you should say that. Kimura was known to practice Tai Otoshi against trees. Of course that they wouldn't fall but then... when grabbing a person, just imagine!

i think ju jutsu is better than judo because there you have strikes and in judo you don't
streetshinobi407 2 years ago
Depends on where you try. Traditionally and throughout Japan, in self defense Judo there is strikes. And you cannot claim one fighting style better than another. Many have tried, and many styles have had their moments of triumph and defeat. So once you think an art is superior, be ready to read about their many defeats.
azraelangelofred 2 years ago 3
yeah thats true
streetshinobi407 2 years ago
butt still i still would like ju jutsu better than judo
streetshinobi407 2 years ago
It is all about who has trained more, has the better mentality and wants the win more. That's if both competitors have the same skill level. It is not the art, it is the artist.
But Judo was selected as the winner when they compared it to Jujitsu in Kano's days...
retardno002 2 years ago
True, but that was back when it was "kano jiu jitsu", which was more like a well balanced Jujutsu than what we call Judo now. Also Jujutsu was a "scattered" art back then. There were so many styles, all so narrow minded and focused on only ONE aspect of the true Jujutsu that the samurai had. Like one only did disarms, another only did nerve strikes, etc, etc. The Jujutsu of today, well balanced from all former variations, would give a good fight. And judo is also different now.
azraelangelofred 2 years ago
this whole sport is stupid nowadays you cant grab hold of someones gi in a real fight it looks really stupid when they are bot holding onto each other like that id just be tempted to use strikes
Lan5in6 2 years ago
its more useful than you would think. while its true people dont wear a gi normally these moves can be applied to shirts, jackets, basically any type of clothing.
as far as using a strike, the martial arts were about killing. while a strike would be useful now adays, it wouldnt work against armor.
the ring and real life are different things too, while in real life you would use both strikes and grapple, judo focuses on grappling, so that would be what is used in the judo matches.
forcystus4 2 years ago 2
hence nowadays
Lan5in6 2 years ago
why not ask Karo Parisyan of UFC if Judo can't be applied without a Gi. or actual fight. Of course you have to punch or kick
JUPITERMARSVENUS 2 years ago
Most throws in judo can be adapted for fighting without a Gi. if done correctly, in the right situation, the techniques can be devastating in real combat.. that is why judo throws are incorporated in military and police combat training.
Most practitioners of traditional judo (like me) study it as a sport and an art form and not really for real life combat applications. Go do MMA or join the military if you want to see Judo techniques adapted for real combat situations..
spren27 2 years ago
Seriously. I have been training with my friend in the Judo techniques of the Old Army and the Marine Corp, and I have whooped more than a few Army Combatives guys. Though I have had my butt whooped a time or two as well.

judos gud, i do kungfu and they go gud 2gather
mantiskungfuman 2 years ago
that sounds logical to me. i also heard of hwa rang do and it has joint locks, throws, and submissions as well.. but i will def think it over and i was also thinking after i get black belt in tkd to take kung fu. would you think that would be practical? so i could be trained in tkd, bjj and kung fu.
Lucassfit 2 years ago
Depends if you want to use your martial arts for the street, for spiritual purposes or for ring sport.
For the ring, train in BJJ as well as something like Greco Roman.
Another good style is Wing Chun.
heliojanusz 2 years ago
the best styles are wing chun for close quarters tkd for kicking muay thai for good knees and elbows boxing and karate and some kung fu styles like wing chun for good punching and karate for good open had strikes like shotokan. bjj for good ground fighting judo for good takedowns but being like bruce lee and using jeet kune do is da best

well my opionin like bruce lee said take what is use ful and discard what is not and that is wat i use im a jeet kune do user

i have training in taekwondo and i want another martial art to add to my arsenal. one that has ground game and throws but i want one that works in the smaller persons favor. what would be a good combo with tkd?like judo or something?
Lucassfit 2 years ago
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu..there are plenty of schools that train throws and takedowns as well as the awesome leverage based Brazilian jiu Jitsu! Perfect for smaller guys. You need to know jiu jitsu these days..with MMA being main stream even your regular punk off the streets try and take fights to the ground these days because of what they see on the UFC! I bounced in bars for years and always used BJJ in real fights..plus I used to compete in Kickboxing for 17 years! Jiu jitsu is the best single art

why is jason always fighting hes so full of him self, i wanted to see bill
mkadiri05 2 years ago
he's not, bill does fight in half of them, but yea he is a bit full of himself, get sick of hearing about his 15 years mma training in every episode
barefootbandit83 2 years ago
Cause Bill is pretty scared maybe... But I think these martial arts require the person to be a more petite and fast. Not like Bill, he's cut out for boxing and rugby or American football
longyellowbanana 2 years ago
Have you seen Yasuhiro Yamashita? He is the greatest Judoka of all time and quite a big guy. Kimura as well. Size is an advantage where there is lack of technique. And neither of these two guys had good Judo technique. Jason's groundwork and BJJ background is useless against a good judoka so Bill should have fought since he has the size advantage but both their skill levels are the same.
retardno002 2 years ago
I disagree.
BW022 2 years ago
Allright but as you can see, Judo rules don't allow that much groundwork so as far as throws are concerned Bill would have done a lot better. That's my opionion. He wouldn't have tried to take the fight to the ground so much and actually focus on getting an Ippon in stead of just falling to the ground and trying to win with Ne Waza techniques.
retardno002 2 years ago
I disagree, Judo is not about height and power. That guy could throw trees if he wanted to.
MrTwhalley 2 years ago
It's not about height or power as long as you have technique. But none of them had technique... not after a week! So I would have gone with the power guy. But I get your point. I won't reply anymore.
retardno002 2 years ago
all martial arts need power. it's just that technique magnify's one's power to produce better results. it's also very hard to shoulder throw someone taller than you.
RacoonBurglar 2 years ago 3
You can spend the entire match on the ground provided you don't go out of bounds, or have a long pause of inactivity.
I've fought wrestlers and wrestled. Their positions are 100% backwards to judo - and just begging to be thrown, choked, or armlocked.
BJJ is another matter. He may not win, but they do know how not to be choked or defend against armlocks. He could keep going to the ground.
Again, I would rather face a wrestler my size than a BJJ a few divisions under me.
BW022 2 years ago
I practice judo too, but I actually rather face a BJJ guy in a judo match than a skilled wrestler. The wrestlers that I've sparred with have had quite solid stances and good takedowns of their own. Whereas BJJ guys were much easier to throw.
nitro64876 2 years ago 2
I would certainly agree a wrestler would be harder to throw and a BJJ harder to choke or armlock. Call it a wash in term of defense.
However, the wrestler's offense far weaker. He isn't trained to (full point) throw, choke, armlock, or pin (for 30). You pretty much have the entire match with only a fluke chance of losing even if the wrestler does what he does.
The BJJ can choke or armlock you without any special judo training. The judoka will lose if the BJJ guy does what he does.
BW022 2 years ago
Here's the thing, BJJ isn't as useful when you're not in a sport that has rules about downed opponents. If you're in a street fight, and you're a wrestler who can take someone down, you will fare much better than a bjj expert who can submit someone on the ground because of the fact that you can take them down and then stomp them and there's nothing they can do about that.
SolidSnakeRules 2 years ago
BW022 2 years ago
SolidSnakeRules 2 years ago
Nonsense.
