Tony Bennet had the most successful version of this song; on September 8th, 1951 it reached #1 {for 8 weeks} on Billboard's Best Sellers chart. Ironically it would be knocked out of the top spot by Tony Bennett himself with "Cold, Cold Heart".
Tony Bennett's version was ranked No. 2 on Billboard's Year-End Top 30 Singles of 1951 chart
This record was Tony Bennett's debut on the Billboard charts.
Other charted versions; Johnny Desmond {#17}, Tab Smith {#20), & Chris Montez {#71}
Mom and Dad were at Grand Central Station in NYC, early 50's there was a recording booth there, she recorded this song for my Dad, their both gone now, but I still have the record and can hear her voice, Because of You reminds me of their love for one another.
Just found out this was the #1 song on the day I was born, Dec. 31, 1951 Not really my type of music but I'm sure my Mom loved it. Wonder if she sang it to me after I was born? "Because of you my life in now worthwhile"!!
I did an on-line search for the number 1 hit during the week I was born. Put "#1 song on.....folllowed by the date! Try it, it's fun. I also love the new duet of that song that he did with kd lang. It is remarkable to hear the difference. Either way, it's a beautiful song.<3
This was number 1 on the day my wonderful girlfriend Susan was born. It is so appropriate, because she is my world and I do live for her love. Every moment is magical. Michael x
Learning that Bennett studied bel canto singing explains his flawless pronunciation and the open, clear vowels that carry the warmth of his voice so well. My mom sang this (and many others) to us in the car on the way to our music and dance lessons as kids, and I know she and my dad thought of it as one of "their" songs.
@rmercury4 How wonderful for you two. My wife and I are edging 14 years of marriage, but compared to you and your wife, we haven't shaken hands yet! As for this song, something about it really got me when I was quite small. Mom couldn't figure why I liked it so, and if her life were the prize I couldn't have said either. Just something about it-the singer, the orchestra, the tympani you can hear if you turn it up as loud as I used to.
When Dad was dying of cancer, I would sing this to him. His response was always, "Honey, I'm sick already; please DON'T SING!" Wonderful Memories of our last 3 months together, Father and Only Child Daughter. I will cherish this song always.
WOW! 1951,BACK FROM KOREA HEARING THIS PLAYED OVER AND OVER BY A GREAT ARMY NURSE ON OUR FLOOR,IN A MICHIGAN ARMY HOSPITAL. THANK YOU FROM NOW A OLD VETERAN.........
We met in the summer of 1951 at a dance at our YMCA.Asked her for a date to go to the movies.She accepted and it was the begging of one long happy romance.We married 19 April 1952 and have been together ever since.This year it will be 59 years

1960s: People were in love and happy
1990s: People were suffering from the feeling of lost love
2000s: People were angry at their former loves and felt insecure
All through that time the right title for their song was the same

Great song! Thanks for sharing this. Too bad most of the crooners are gone. Todays singers and music are crappy.
