Were the only parts of the trail that you did not hike with your dog those where they are prohibited? Also, how much climbing were you actually able to do while you did have your dog on the trail?
@ChicagoAfrobeatVideo Yes, only the TWO places. Dogs can easily walk every mile of the Apppalachian Trail. Sometimes they might need a boost over a rock, but that is rare.
I see that ou have a dog... Wrere you alowed to bring him/her the whole way? I was reading that they are prohibited in the smokey mountains and in Baxter. Which upsets me because I wanted to bring my little guy so badly :(
@myshoefelloff547 There are kennel contacts in the AT guidebook. A kennel will pick up your dog ON the AT just before the Smokies, and drop your pooch off to you on the other end of the smokies. Same service for Baxter. Or you could hike the 1st 235mls, have your dog dropped off to you, and be good to go for about 2000mls to baxter. Logistically speaking hiking the AT with a dog is easy. My dog had almost 16,000 AT mls w/out any huge logistic problems.
@AlkoHol62 No problem. That view is Lehigh Gap, looking south. It's an exposed rock scramble with fairly dramatic views all the way up. The town of Palmerton is nearby, one of the most hiker friendly towns along the entire AT.
@whereskim89 Thanks. How long? Well, that's difficult to guess. Your daily milage will most likely increase as the days pass. I think the majority of hikers cover the state in about 20-25 days.
@ssprenger1 The best advice I could ever give isn't really advice, but more like insight. One thing about the AT that surprises thru hikers is after all pre hike prep, and training they put themselves thru many hikers realize that once ON trail it becomes a better "learn as you go" experience than they ever expected. Don't over plan, don't use maildrops, don't have an itinerary, don't go to heavy, but don't go super ultra lite, learn as you go.
@kookiemoose - couldn't have said it better myself kookiemoose. that piece of advice is basically all you need to know about the AT. Anyone with half a brain and some spare cash saved for possible gear re-purchases can figure it out along the way, or learn from fellow hikers. It was sad seeing people have to leave the trail last year, not because they wanted to, but because they just ran out of money due to unexpected expenses and poor budgeting.
@kookiemoose Wow, that's how i've felt all along about the AT...I know its no cake-walk, but i feel most people plan this thing to its death, and with drops you're either speeding up, or slowing down, and what happens if you don't get one ya know? ...great advice, thanks man
Now that's inspiring!! More people need to get off the couch and hit the trail. I'm trying to figure out how to do it as I'm married with two kids...how long did it take to complete?
@wawhiker Yea, we picked up a camera in Harpers Ferry (the phycological halfway point). It's funny but I never really carried a camera on trail after my first thru hike in 96. I guess I figured I'd already documented every tree and rock. Now I wish I had.
great stuff. I hiked 600 mi last yr and I think about it every day. I hiked Penn, N.J., NY, Conn, Mass, N.H. Seeing your pics made me a little emotional. The Palmerton City Hall basement shot brought it all back. The Lehigh rock scramble, Wind gap, Del water gap, Bear mtn, fitzgerald falls, lemon squeezer, Lions head, Rigga, the many Housatonic crossings, and the towns like Kent, Salisbury, Great Barrington...I gotta find a way to thru hike in the next couple yrs. Thanks so much for the memories
@benjammin9287 Thank you very much. The trail awaits your adventure. 600 miles is enough to give anyone the bug to hike the entire thing. I hiked my home state of Maine when I was 15, and that was all it took to hook me in.
great vidio i love the piano this is one of my faviort thru hiker vidios i watch it all the time and look forward to my next trip to the trail thanks for shareing
I was wondering about the dog that came along. Did he ever serve as a problem going through any of the parks? Was he allowed everywhere, collar or not?
My girlfriend and I are gonna give it a shot and we have a very outdoorsy and obedient catahoula cur. Just trying to figure out the logistics of him making the trip with us.
@attemptedskater Hiking with a dog is great, and takes a little work too. There are only 2 places dogs are not allowed The Smokies (75.0mls) and Baxter State Park (14.0mls). Some hostels, and many trail motels do not allow dogs. Unless the shelter/lean-to is unoccupied I always avoided them. Once your hiking with your dog a month or two everything kinda just falls into place. My dog retired with over 16,000 AT miles and she loved every mile. I recommend it.
@PigeonTech I never had a phone on any of my thru hikes. I rarely had a camera even. However it is a very easy to keep them charged. If you have a camera that takes a rechargeable battery it would be wise to carry at least one spare, along with the charger. When you get to town every few days or so, you will be surprised how many outlets are available to do your charging with, they're everywhere. Same for the phone. Warm them up in pocket before turning them on to conserve power. : )
hey man im planning on a thru hike march 2011 and i have some questions about your preperation.... how to meet other hikers prior to hiking... etc.. if you could hit me up email ill ask away and would greatly appreciate it
@suicidebypolice I tend to agree. When YT flagged it for copyright and took down the audio, I was forced to choose from YT's music library, which if your not familiar w/ is really not very good : )
@kookiemoose better to pick something popular music wise... then they label it 4 u and no infringement... thx fer posting.... I did Springer to the ponies... north of Damascus.. Can't wait to hit it next Spring... Ahhh trail life..
@younwhosarmy That's a great section to hike, a bit crowded in the spring, but very peaceful during winter. Keep hiking, and maybe I'll see you out there in the mountains, it's a great place to be I agree....
enjoyed your video. I tried to thru hike the pct in 08 with my golden retriever. Bad idea. I grew up with a chesapeake and have decided to get another soon. Nice to see they can be rough enough for a thru hike. How old was yours at the time and did you do anything special when he was a pup to prepare for long distances.
@jmossbarrett thanks. My dogs 1st thru hike was when she was 2, and her last thru hike she was 13. I did nothing special in training. I trained her to not go near AT water sources until directed by me as to where to drink from. little stuff like that, but nothing much, she, like many bay retrievers was indifferent about other people&dogs. She is 13 in this vid, and was still eager to hike 30+ mile days now and then. Great dogs, the best
@landroamer1000 Biting insects can be a bit of a nuisance. Blackfly season in ME, NH, and VT starts around mothers day ends around fathers day. Mosquito season starts in june along the AT, and can get frustrating. Gnats also start up around early june, but are not present in the northeast. Deet, bounce fabric softener sheets, and a headnet are staples for many hikers. Northbound and Southbound hikers get bugs around june.
AT hiking Dogs Bikinis Huge burgers Humor Rock climbing Attractive women Tents Long distance views Swimming This vids got it all!!! Thanks for posting this vid!
Great trip, how did you manage to get your dog along the way? I know dogs arent allowed in the Smokies at least, but would love to bring my dog on a thru-hike.
75mls thru Smokies, and 14mls in Baxter SP, are the only 2 places that prohibit dogs. Smokies: there is a few kennel services (in guidebook) that pickup and dropoff dogs, for about 300$. In Baxter, there is something similar, yet cheaper.
"hike your own hike", simple words, yet wholly true. The best advice I could give anyone getting ready to thru hike the AT would be to let them know that it is as much as a "learn as you go" experience as you want it to be. In other words, the AT is user friendly, and if you just follow those white blazes they will take care of ya.
I'm planning (hoping) to do the trail from the Delaware Water Gap to Mt. Kahtadin in June '10. I want to bring my dog as I'll be going solo. How did your dog manage on the trails.... especially on rocky sections or areas with steep inclines??? thanks!!!
if you have maildrops, and you are a northbounder starting in spring, figure on about 1 to 1.75 per mile. This estimate does not include gear purchase (if necessary) along the way. Believe it or not, your age, and other factors come into play as to estimating the cost of a thru hike.

So, for the 2 places your dog wasn't allowed, The Smokies and Baxter, did you kennel and have him shuttled? If so, how much was that roughly?
attemptedskater 1 year ago
@attemptedskater Late Reply opps! Ok in 2006 prices for smokies kennel w/ shuttle: 1 dog 250.00, 2 dogs 350.00, and 3 dogs 400.00.
I'm not sure about baxter state park kennel price. Probably about 100.00, but not sure.
For smokies try Curtis at Standing Bear Farm Hostel 423-487-0014.
