@seankinsellasean One of the biggest fallacys in football. I'm still SEETHING about it to this day. Taylor had questionable tactics as England manager but he was also totally screwed over during that away game in Holland.
@MrStonecold69 Thanks for the msg. I suppose it is personal opinion, I thought the 'Mr Brightside' and the lyrics added to it. Never the less, I appreciate your remarks.
I agree with others comments in that in hindsight we can now see it wasnt really Taylor's fault, he was unlucky to have been boss when the quality of English players was very poor but all you can do is get them to play to the best of their ability which wasnt good enough, especially when your own coaches are crap aswell. I mean what can you really do with Sharpe, Merson, Thomas, Clough etc. Good league players at the time but on the international stage we were shown to be behind.
Taylor was tactically one-dimensional...full back punts it up to areas which either Shearer or Ferdinand will attack....midfield's only role in a Taylor team was to retrieve the second ball....it's no surprise that more cultured footballers like Clough struggled to make an impact when the ball spends 90& of the time above his head....Taylor was also very stubborn & refused to change his philosophy....
Even though he's a nice guy, let's not forget this...
WHAT SORT OF THING IS "APPENIN" "ERE!!... Ah thank the Good Lord 4 Graham Taylor!! The USA would never have beat the Limeys 2-NIL if he hadn't 'ave been in charge!

@seankinsellasean You mean Koeman? Who went onto score the first goal? How also was it not a penalty?

@Mikez4 Indeed, I am not sure what the alternatives at the time were to those players. Lineker was not the same player, Gazza always injured.

@R8films Shearer was in his prime too, but was injured for just about the whole qualifying campaign.

Nothing wrong with Graham Taylor. A real credit to the game and a genuinely warm and engaging man.

Crazy he was ever given the job.
Frankly he and Carlton Palmer have a lot in common, they're reputations as a good club manager/player was ruined by being out of their depth.
