  • Do a search on YouTube for David Myers Firth of Fifth. That's how it should be played Tony.

  • Wow!! This intro is not good Tony? He is normally so spot on with his keyboard sound. I'm surprised he used this sound at all. He would of been better off getting Rolf Harris to come and play his stylophone,it would of sounded better ha ha

  • MONTREAL- 2011-THE NIGHT OF THAT SHOWW IN THE OLD MONTREAL-FORUM I WAS 10 YEARS OLD!!! WOW......

  • I'm trying to learn the piano's intro. But... AWWWW it's so hard!

  • They cut out an entire section. My favorite part. What a waste of time!!!!

  • The video is bullshit it's just the same bits of Hackett edited together on the solo and the same bit of Rutherford playin Bass part?!!!!!!!

  • The big question is where is the sustain pedal ??

  • The video part is epic bullshit.

But audio is as oldschool as it gets.

    I LOVE IT lol

  • actually, tony IS genesis with other 4 sidekicks.

  • woowwwooowwww tks for this postt regards from argentina

  • Too bad Tony couldn't have used a real piano on stage for this song. The electric piano he uses at the beginning really sounds pitiful...I can understand why he stopped doing it eventually.

  • @jhillst

Could he have just tried to work out the intro some more?

  • @jhillst Amen

  • Nothing tops the early 70's Genesis with Peter Gabriel.

  • the solo is really shortened in this one...

  • @thewer25 in your twenties, selebrate! I was 13 when i first heard Genesis, at their 4 album!!

  • I Love You Phil, But Gabriel is The Greatest..

Finally, I've seen Gabriel in "Firth of Fifth"...Long Live Genesis.

    Thanks ELIOREYES...

  • I think Genesis did some grear stuff with Collins as well. You often forget about Trick of a tail which was a great album. With each new one they got more and more into pop, don't you think so ?

  • Peter looks like the joker from batman :P

  • this is my Nationality songs

  • anybody knows who play giuitars? (Phillips? Hacket?)

  • @crossroadss Hackett on guitar in this.

  • @crossroadss that's steve hackett on guitar.

  • Thank you, I've always wanted to see this one, my mom told me about it, but this is my first time seeing Peter singing it, it was always with Phil singing it, THIS is GENESIS, Phil singing, sorry, hes great but it's not really Genesis.

  • Finally they're inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame. FUSE Channel on March 15th 2010 LIVE from the Waldorf Astoria in NYC- DON'T MISS IT -- GENESIS LIVES FOREVER !!

  • un monument ..

  • I know it was hard to make keyboards, but why didn't he use a normal piano for the intro? It would have been worth it some logistical trouble:) the intro is amazing when played classic style on classic piano, now it was very much "Meh". Amazing song. Yes PG is a genious

  • Real pianos are a pain to take on tours, especially since they can easily go out of tune from transportation and having to retune them if they do. The album version is, of course, real.

  • PG is a genius!

  • AWESOME!!

  • I heard about the Tony's intro to Firth of Fifth, but to be honest the one in this video sounds totally fake for me. In fact the whole video it's a cheap cut & paste...

Btw, I love Genesis. and probably these concerts -I guess that finally made "Seconds Out"- are the last 100% prog they did. Right after that, the metamorphosis started. "And then there were three" is 50%, and Duke 30%. Abacab 0%

  • Invisible Touch is like -50%. What useles drek that record was. I liked Abacab and Duke a lot, but by '86, it was just Phil Collins' maudlin achey breaky bleeding heart songs dominating their music.

  • this rmi electric piano is really awful

  • Don`t complain, it was huge problem for key board constructors to create electric instrument to imitate piano. Yamaha CP70 in mid 70s was the first one with perfect sound and synths started to imitate peano in mid 80s.

  • I think the problem with Genesis is not that "Phil isn't as good a singer as Peter" or "they'll never get a guitarist as good as Steve again" or whatever - it's that Phil wound up in the WRONG ROLE. He and Tony just wound up with too much power over what was a great band. (Like all great bands, it was once a democracy).

Phil was a great drummer - not only with Genesis, but also session work that he did (Eno, Hackett). But he doesn't have personality like Peter & they ran out of good ideas.

  • i completly agree, great observation

  • Is anyone actually watching this clip? There are perhaps 2 or 3 brief snippets of actual live performance, but the rest is shoddy editing from out-of-context sequences, and then repeated ad nausum. You can see Hackett at one point going in forward and reverse repeatedly. I remember buying this entire concert on VHS from a rock and roll expo back in the early 80s and getting angry when I actually watched it.

  • @KLanz123 What more do you want when shot in 8mm by a student at the show with all it's darkness and concert lighting in 74'? Technology and film quality from back then are not what they are today...

  • @KLanz123 Phil didnt have that much hair in the 80's

  • @KLanz123 Does have a lot of looping, doesn't it?

  • I sure wish this whole Montreal concert from 1974 was available on dvd or even tape. I do not understand why Yes, The Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, and others have better and more available early live videos available and Genesis does not have many at all. It truly is frustrating being a Genesis fanatic. The Lamb live in its entirety would truly be the holy grail.I just have to enjoy all videos which are available thanks to all of you for sharing. Thank you elioreyes.

  • the most haunting guitar solo of all time. Hacket really shines in this one.

  • He's recording with C. Squire. I can't wait to hear what comes out of the combiantion of the best Prog guitar player with the best Prog bass player. 75% of the album is already done, according to a Squire's interview in Prog magazine.

  • They did an album last year I want. It's a fully orchestrated choral Christmas record called: "Chris Squire - Swiss Choir" I want it before Christmas this year. It was on back order last Christmas so I missed it. )=

A decent electric piano for touring was hard to come by in 1974, but at least Tony had his Mellotron!

  • ye well he pwns and tell me when he isnt shining lol

  • D'accord!! Collins was a shadow of Gabriel on vocals and on stage presence. Fortunately I got to see this tour at Ford Auditorium in Detroit - I've judged all other concerts by that one ever since!! I will say I had to admire Collins later - for becoming a pop superstar despite being bald and pudgy - but he ruined Genesis.

  • Beautiful guitar work by Steve Hackett.

  • Beautiful song and I prefer Peter Gabriel's vocals on this one.

  • Peter is awesome, magnificent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • gabriel the master, maybe pioneer of performance makeup in scene

  • That would be Alice Cooper.

  • It's the RMI piano...it sounds "tinkly".

  • Perhaps this was the end of the pete era hence the lack of interest by tony on the intro still real genesis is good genesis by the way the guys pissing and moaning need to get the ole led zep collection out and be done with it

  • I think the twinkly-dinkly sounding intro was probably added by the editor or person who posted this. As far as I know, even with PG, they never played the intro in concert.

  • I think I heard that they did play the intro to Firth of Fifth for a while but they cut it out midway through the tour because Banks screwed it up badly one time. I read somewhere that he messed up, stopped playing, and yelled out the word "fuck" amidst the silence so the whole audience heard. I have no way of knowing this other than that I read it somewhere. But judging by the way the intro sounds on this video with that keyboard, I wouldn't blame them for cutting it out regardless.

  • Gabriel is creepy

  • He always was! Now he's just an older kind of creepy.. lol

  • excellent old head stuff from the theatrical rock era! who was that that said goofy outfits whatare you 20 years old i bet. this stuff is for the 40 -50 s people who know what real asid is!

  • Hackett plays a bit with the solo here and that makes it more fresh.

Great sound! Too bad it is only a fraction of the song.

  • ¡Muchas gracias, Elio!

  • yeah, it is a bit rough... studio wizards, though! Phil looking good, sans beard, and Pete, hiding behind his theatrical gear. I understand he claimed to be a bit "bashful", hence the mask, or make-up.

  • IT's JUST YOU....TRUST ME !!!

  • What a trip! Saw it by the very first time in 76. First laser show!!! What a trip!

  • This is real genesis. Will we ever see these 5 bears on stage together again he asks - expecting the answer no

  • Fuckin horrific

  • You visited this thread / video just to write that shit? Okay. Hey, when you respond to me with something stupid, list your favorite group & song so we can all laugh.

  • The grand piano opening to this piece is wonderful as played on the studio version "Selling England By the Pound" I think. This version sounds like some kid going through it on a Bontempi ready for they're Grade 7 Associated Board exam. Oh, and by the way this fuckin thread does not belong to you or your country and neither does the rest of the world as you so clearly believe.

  • You came through in spades. But, you forgot your favorite group. Even though, your comment was funny enough.

  • not much good music has been played since 73... this was past the end.. zep, the who, floyd, all sucked by then

  • Yeah Tony really butchered this...but I still love him. :-)

  • mestres del mundo o maestros

  • mESTRES DEL MUNDO

  • to be brutally honest, the piano intro sounds awful played on the electric piano. I understand why they skipped it in later tours.

  • is this from december, 1974?

  • No, is from 21-04-1974

  • @ELIOREYES

    April 21, 1974.

  • Thank you for posting this video!

Too bad Tony was too lazy to play the whole introduction but this is a great song!

  • Just thank you for post it! It's GREAT! :)
