As you pull on the line the kite moves forward through the air. It only needs a small amount of air movement to create lift. Once it is above my head, I can let the line droop to the floor and the kite acts as a glider and soars along in a straight path till it gets near the ground. Then I pull the line again and it rotates and points upward and starts to rise again.
It is mostly resistance against the kite line making it fly.

What was making it fly? Was there wind in that room?
