The reason this scene works so well is because he plays it totally straight - there's no kind of winking to the camera like so many comedians can't help doing. He just looks utterly devastated. When he sings: "It would be so nice..." he looks like he's got 6 weeks to live. Every time I watch this clip it makes me laugh. Brilliant acting.
