It's so funny because when I watched psycho I thought from Gavins look and and acting that he could play Bond, and it's rare for me to really see someone as Bond, and then later I found out that he was so close to REALLY becoming Bond. haha.
Gavin had 'Bond' written all over him. This guy could have played him for at least 5 pictures. The fact that they signed him (1970), and then re-considered him (1972 ?)..should say something. Taller, and better looking than Connery. Too bad.
Gavin had the "Bond look". It's just too bad that George Lazenby screwed himself out of the role. Lazenby would have been a better Bond than Roger Moore ever hoped to be.
I am a John Gavin fan but I agree with davetwocombs comments about his posture. For some reason John is "slumping" and it is annoying. Maybe the director told him to hunch down, but it doesn't fit his good-guy looks.
Didn't John Gavin go on to become the US Ambassador to Mexico under Ronald Reagan? I seem to recall him holding a rather melodramatic press conference following the murder of DEA agent Kiki Camarena (sp?).
A good bond?! Look at how he carries himself, he looks gangly. And with that forced stern expression on his face he doesn't look tough, he looks like a pretender. I actually thought it was a spoof comedy. reminds me of jerry lee lewis. Perhaps about as much menacing screen presence.
This was a very interesting and entertaining video. OHMSS did not generate the huge box office of GOLDFINGER and THUNDERBALL, but I thought OHMSS was one of the best Bond films. While I was disappointed with DAF, I have always been glad that Sean Connery returned as 007. DAF should have been about 007's effort to avenge his wife's murder. United Artists missed the chance to make a great movie with DAF.
John Gavin would be great Bond. He looks like young Marlon Brando. Your video looks like mix of early Bonds and Fantomas with Marais. Nice! Try maybe with Clint Eastwood or Steve McQueen (would-be-007 in 70'ies). Regards!
It was but I was only reffering to other james bond film grosses and not the whole movie business deal.
So I'll say it again, it did very well, most people ( fans) loved it but it is the only 007 film that barely made it's productions costs over it's initial release. It of course made alot of money afterwards but in hollywood terms, that means a failure. And in those days, that was enough to call Connery back.
They called Connery back because Lazenby made the worst career move in the history of filmmaking by turning down a contract to make several more Bond films. If he hadn't let his ego ruin his career he would have been in DAF (and it would have been even worse, if that is possible).
the only reason they recalled Connery, was because Lazenby was stupid and listened to his manager's advice, that being linked to a "dying film series" would kill his career... The producers wanted to sign Lazenby to a 7 picture deal - which would be 8 total Bond films in all... but after countless times of never being able to strike a deal, they gave up on Lazenby and brought back Sean... it's a known fact that Lazenby was never fired.... research my friend.. research..
interesting vid. I think Gavin would have been a disaster though. He is american-(u can see him in Psycho). Seems to be a pretty flat uninteresting actor.
I agree with you 'cause the film is in fact one of the bests as far as I'm concerned but it is to date the only Bond film that didn't earned it's production costs in it's initial release. License to kill ( another one of the greats) nearly suffered the same fate with it's poor ratings in america.
Years later, Ronald Reagan named Gavin ambassador to Mexico.
Gavin is half Hispanic and is fluent in Spanish.
In 1960, he played Janet Leigh's boyfriend in Hitchcock's "Psycho".

At least John Gavin has a nice head of hair and not that spiky garbage.
But isn't he at least partially Hispanic?
ysbaddaden2003 1 year ago
The closest I've ever seen to Bond in my mind's eye was Martin Kemp in The Krays.
But Connery was the one who came up with that weird gallows humor.

This clip is not from a James Bond test,
this clip featuring John Gavin and
Margaret Lee is from a real Euro-Spy film
titled OSS 117- MURDER FOR SALE,
one of the French secret agent series of
Agent OSS 117. Agent OSS 117 was created
by French writer Jean Bruce, and these films
were produced by Andre Hunebelle. Kerwin Mathews, John Gavin, Frederick Stafford
all played Hubert Bath Agent OSS 117

This guy would have been a great bond. Definatly.
He could have done Diamonds are Forever and the first 2 Roger Moore Films, Live and let Die and The Man with the golden gun!!
coolguyjames99 2 years ago
Bond must be played by an Englishman. Scottsmen and Irishmen are okay.
birdleson 2 years ago
most of the bonds were scottish or irish :/
HeroOfTheGuitar 2 years ago
He said Scotsmen and Irishmen are okay you freak. Plus most people to play bond are English,
Roger Moore, Daniel Craig and although Dalton was born in Wales he pretty much a Englishmen having grown up there and living there.
There was also the Australian George Lazenby.

I'm a great John Gavin fan and I think he would have been a wonderful Bond. Better than Moore, for sure!

noo, roger moore was one of the best.

Yeah but David Niven would have been great as well, plus Moore was a pansy boy, couldnt play sport or throw a ball, he looks like a girl trying to..
still a good bond

That other man is Robert Hossein. What movie is this from? Gavin would have made a good 007. Always found Connery overrated!

GREAT Clip !! John Gavin was awful in Psycho, but he came off as very Bondian in this clip. He might have made a decent 007 with the right direction.

Yes. I don't recall the press conference, but I recall Gavin as ambassador. He is Mexican-American and speaks fluent Spanish.
