  • My names Russell and I love diesels to haha

  • Sex.

  • Impressive. My Dad's 300sd certainly wouldn't have gotten with it that quickly

  • shes fast

  • Inline 5Cyl ?

  • Is only me? or this car is fast ?

  • @AndreiZzfull no it's not you i was suprised that it could that fast that quickly

  • Wow German Diesels rev too high. lol

  • this baby rocks

  • wow

  • Wow that is amazing for a 1985 diesel!

  • I dont think it'd die even with no valve adjustments.. :P a friend of mine has driven his W124 200D for many thousand kms with its valve clearances maladjusted.. so that it sounds like pushrod driven :D

  • I want one

  • my dream car...

  • @sarenkowy They aren't hard to find and they are not that expensive.

  • what is the rpm limit of these engines?

  • i seen this today at wallmart and i was like whos truck is that

  • rpm idle speed on ur diesel motor should be close to 1000 sir...you're is as low as a gas motor

  • @Arlind86 Nah, at 1000 it will really jerk hard when you put it into D. 750 is the factory spec.

  • ..btw its great video, just will be awesome if you did the same acceleration before purge and valve adjustment...

  • I have same 1985 300 turbo diesel, just 4 doors...made in april 1985 what is probably last month of W123..will do valve adjustment next week in service and ready to do purge myself..just wondering should i use just one can of diesel purge or two???thanks

  • Whats the deal with the 300Ds in the us market, some are turbo and some are not, I'm guessing there is a year when they became turbos? 82?

  • @IvyLeagueCars 82 for the sedan and coupe, 81 for the station wagon.

  • Nice

  • Looks strange tome...the Coupe (2door) was never sold with a diesel engine in Germany. Export only.

  • what about a 1982 300td?

  • Hello! Very interesting video. Can you help me do the same improvement to my Mercedes 300 1989? Please tell me what you did, to see if I can do the same .

I have six cilinders in line. Unfortunately I live in Vina del Mar, Chile.

  • Great video!!I just picked up My 85' 300TD saloon,and its a real bad ass,traded it for a 3.8L 95 mustang....Great trade!!

  • Wow. Amazing. I love how smoothly it shifts. Wish I could get mine to do that.

  • K&N cone filter replacing that whole intake thing and puttin a straight pipe exhaust would cut over a second and a half off of the 0-60

  • More speedy than I thought. Beautiful car, too.

  • I have just bought the special spanners to do the valve adjustment on my 300 TDT. What do you mean by "diesel purge". If there is a benefit to this proceedure I would like to try it out but I am not sure what you mean.

  • goes after 40...

  • its so slow, it took ages to get over 80 mph, i almost fell asleep waiting 4 it to reach 80 mph lmao

  • @the124Lscania Not sure what you drive, but I can guarantee this will beat it to 500,000 on the clock.

  • @gotham61 yes indeed, but by the time it gets there, cars will be made with wings and il be in my 90's lmfao

  • haha i have this exact same car!!!!!! im getting everyting on it fixed on it this summer!! great car

  • what's this beauty get for mpg?

  • And now I'm supposed to add my two cents? ... There's no point in having a discussion that's based on some foolish claims.

I know one thing that my TDI isn't named a Cupra for nothing ;-)

  • @DaveGPMoto Firstly, your comparison of a petrol vs a TURBO diesel is precisely NOT a like-for-like comparison. Compare a turbo petrol with a turbo diesel. Anyway, you say "they" are doing away with petrol engines for diesels, please name who these manufacturers are!

There are diesel hatchbacks, yes. I can buy a Golf diesel tepid-hatch from the dealer. But where are the diesel sportscars and diesel supercars?

  • I wasn't aware that diesels could be

    'performance cars.'

  • Dude that thing flys, it performs like it did out of the Sttutgardt factory 25 years ago, I have never heard of such a "purge" I had 300 D for ions ,been religiously faithfull to Marvel Mistery and Kleen diesel, if not I regurlarly add oil to the fuel maybe 1 quart in 10-15 gallons, they run better diesel fuel today is raspy dry pump and injectors don't like it, valve adj does a big difference too .,,,,.. congrats. er

  • will this help if my 85 300d is not a turbo? graymarket.

  • Yep it sure will!

  • Can you please explain what excatly is a diesel purge?? What do you have to do? Also, does a valve adjustment mean rebuilding the engine? Thanks!! Mine has 260K and doesn't drive anywhere close to as well as yours.. So I am thinking of options..

  • @whacki1

I thought a diesel purge is where you somehow purge out air pressure caught in the diesel lines or do i sound like a dumbshit?

  • what is a diesel purge?

  • @sootkase ; I did a diesel purge on my 1985 300D using the product : Molly Diesel Purge. You run directly your engine ( not from the thank ) on this product and it cleans the pre-combustion chambers and the injectors. I also did a valve adjustment and saw a big difference. I hope it helps you !

  • @unimogman404 What consists the valve adjustment consist of? PLease ?

    Thank you much.

  • @MrOldBeaver :On the older model mercedes, valves are activated mecanically so you have to adjust the clearance for intake and exaust valve. Check on internet to see if the valves on the 1989 inline 6 diesel are not hydraucally activated. If they are hydraulic, you don't need to adjust them; they adjust automatically.

  • google it

  • The days that Diesel fuelled machines were always easily overtaken by all petrol cars have gone well by & have been for over a decade now. Petrol heads who make false "tractor" claims are the ones who are bitter because they can't handle the fact that modern turbo-charged diesels these days can actually outrun loads of petrols! I have a TDi 200hp which can outrun any Non-turbo petrol/gas car. 0-60 = 7.5s in a 166hp Honda Civic 1.8 VTi why have that when you can do that in a 200hp 50mpg TDi?

  • @1ns4ne1d10t You prefer diesel, that's your choice. But, do a like-for-like comparison. You compare a larger, turbocharged diesel engine with a small naturally-aspirated petrol engine. My 1.8 naturally-aspirated petrol does 0-60 in 6.9 seconds with no drama, tops out at nearly 150mph and still returns 42mpg on a motorway run with some fast twisties thrown in. The car weighs 1250kg, so isn't some lightweight thing either.

    Like-for-like, petrol beats diesel!

  • @donkmeister That's an asinine argument to make. Diesel tech has come a long way both in terms of power and efficiency. A modern turbocharged diesel engine will produce just as much power a petrol one. Look at BMW 335d and 335i they have almost the same 0-60 but the diesel consumes less fuel.

  • Donkmeister has never driven a Diesel, he wouldn't know how refined they actually are. Its fine listening to petrolheads but they never get it right. If he drove an Automatic diesel there wouldn't be any drama in the 0-60. Automatic diesels are much better than automatic petrols for refinement & speed. Its not about hitting 145 miles an hour, its how fast it can climb!

  • @1ns4ne1d10t Actually, yes I have... I have driven many diesels (some turbo, some not, mostly VAG, some Peugeot, some Ford) and found they were smoother than I expected (a complement to a diesel, yes) with very linear torque across their rev range. However, when you get bored and actually TIME the performance with a stopwatch, you find they're slower than a petrol even if they FEEL quick. Reason? My 1.8 litre is on tap from 2500-7500 rpm. Does any diesel have a 5k rpm power band?

  • A Diesel needs 10-15 more Bhp to keep up with a petrol equivalent, no ones disputing that. I work for a rentals company, I drive both fuels 24/7, A Diesel might have a few more shifts to contend with but its quicker than a petrol on mid-range. Its not about being on tap from 2500-7500, have you tried to keep up with a fast moving Diesel in a petrol, casting aside the short powerband? Its impossible you get dusted!

  • @1ns4ne1d10t Sure, diesels have plenty of mid-range torque which works for some. I honestly find that a 1.8 petrol from 60-100mph in any gear is faster than a 1.9TDi in any gear. Depends on where you feel the mid-range lies!!! If I'm overtaking from 40mph on a country lane, I will usually go from 3rd gear (3k rpm at 40mph). But, in a diesel it may be quickest to use 4th for torque. Some people prefer that, but I prefer to know I'm getting past a bit quicker regardless of higher engine revs! :)

  • A 1.8 petrol from 60-100 is faster than a 1.9 TDi? that is such turd it really is... You have not driven a Diesel at all. If you have ever driven a 1.9 TDi you will know that its 3rd gear after 40Mph, not 4th gear. I go from 3rd gear for an overtake, 3rd goes up to 70 miles per hour on a TDi. You aren't getting past quicker on high engine revs, a diesel will flash past quicker than yours will. Oh dear, you really have a lot to learn!

  • Your claim that a 1.8 petrol overtakes faster than a 1.9TDi is such arse over shit coming from your head that I have to copy & paste what you said & display it buddy. I've never seen this much crap before but theres always a first.

  • You say "Does any diesel have a 5k RPM power band" like its some sort of boast, it doesn't need a huge amount of revs because torque compensates! In any case you havn't got the slightest clue about diesels have you? They are not always 100% restricted to 4,000 revs & thats your lot, if you are that worried you can have them with new internals which push them up to 6,000 revs. Duh!

  • @xskeetskeetskeetx Indeed, I find your argument asinine... The petrol gets to 62mph in 5.6s, the diesel, takes 6.0s. 0.4 seconds on 5.6 seconds is a significant reduction in performance. Plus, the diesel costs £2000 more.

BMW have chosen to make a £38K diesel car that performs rather well. They also make an identical £36K petrol car that performs better. Asinine, methinks.

  • @donkmeister : Nowday, diesel cars and truck are far superior in technologie than there counterpart gas vehicles. I pull my motorcycle and trailer ( aprox 1100 lbs ) with a Volks TDi that produces 140hp, 225lbs of torque. Take a 140hp gas engine, it will produce aprox 140+- foot/lb of torque and will never be able to take that trailer up the hill without shiftinf from 5th to 4th.

  • @donkmeister ; Where diesel wins, it is on fuel economy because it doesn't have tu turn much to produse it's top torque ( mine is 1900rpm )

  • You claim there is no drama - tops out at nearly 150 & it still returns 42 miles to the gallon, what a load of cock! Every 1.8 I drive at enterprise does not do 42 miles to the gallon, its a drama to get anything out of it, then they only do 35-38. You try racing your "6.9 second" 1.8 against a turbo diesel in mid-range, you will see the drama in yours when you try to keep up with a diesel at this speed. You won't!

  • for those who say this is a slow car to the owner of the civic hatchback i smoked. lol although mine only has 30,000 miles on the engine(overhauled) and is a little quicker than this, but still these are one of the most comfortable and reliable cars ever made i would take one of these over a newer model car anyday.

  • Comment removed

  • wow, this is fast for this old diesel car!!! 5*****

  • Maybe it's old car, but very good. Just look to the oil pressure (+4bar) and it's have a good acceleration. The new Benzes they will not be so good after 20 years than this.

    srry for my english..

  • im impressed!

  • its goes steady and doesnt stop accelereation .. very impressive.

  • I own a 82 300sd and it runs great with only 150,000 miles but it is on the slow side. Plus At my job we got a ford f250 power stroke that is pretty quick, also the UD's move as well as the chevy diesels. i love em all. Still wish i could get my hands on a bmw 335d.

  • very impressive for an older diesel with 230,000+ miles

  • 230, 000 miles is nothing for a diesel its MAYBE half way through its life

  • Maybe new Benzes, but old Benzes rule!!

  • For its time, this is fast.

  • nice

i would like to like have 1

  • i own a 1987 mercedes benz 300SDL and i heard soemthign about a recall on these cars? something that ruins your engine if this is true please comment

  • I believe that's the ceramic turbo charger bushings... could be wrong, check with a dealer

  • There was something about an exhaust gas chamber made of out ceramic that could shatter I think.

  • the 300 SDL is pretty reliable, it only has thermic problems, that can kill your cylinderhead. But this only happens if you race the car at 120 mph permanenlty, which is not possible in the US (here in germany it is :D)

The 350 SDL is a lot more problematic, since the connection rods are too weak. But with the 300 SDL you'll be ok

I have the 300 D engine in my G class, it's not the fastest, but has a very good fuel economy and lovely sound

  • Why can't you go 120 in the US? Are the US spec ones more restricted?

  • Miles per hour lol 120mph = roughly 190 something kph. and actually in America we have less restrictions on speed :) but also we have less on pollution -_- lol

  • @taytay7864 I think you mean the trap oxidizer. This was replaced by Mercedes for no charge by something called an oxygen catalyst many years ago. I'm pretty sure they'll still change it for free if you have a rare car where the job wasn't done yet. This only affects 87s and a few (California version) 85s.

  • smoooooooooooooth!

  • is that mph?

  • Very nice! I have always loved this model year. Can you tell me what you mean by a "diesel purge"?

  • He means Lubro Molly Diesel Purge. A sediment one pours into the gas tank, I beleive. DON'T quote me on it, I've never used it.

  • Thanks JakeW810!

  • It drives to the moon and back.... inderstructable!

  • I am not hating American cars,, Some of them obviously have charm. But from a purely technical point of view, I think American cars have a lot of catching up to do with both European and Japanese engineering (terms of engine refinement, efficiency, use of available technology) . I say this in my capacity as a mechanical engineer and someone who has mostly driven European or Japanese cars.

  • Those fuggin cars will run forever

  • @beaman220

yeah thats true i just bought a 84 300sd with over 300k and she still runs great

  • thats damn snappy.

  • W123 Coupe Turbo Diesel :) my dream :)

  • Great job!!! You can`t kill Mercedes.

  • That is certainly true. It is impossible to kill Mercedes cars, especially the diesels.

    300Ds, CDs, TDs,240Ds, 200Ds and 220Ds are the best.

  • @ado2201

My cousin once had a former taxi with >1 mio km run. You can't kill that engine!!!

  • i love the video btw

if i didnt answer that already.

its sooo true a diesel purge and valve adj will work wonders on these engines

mine has 250k on the clock and almost no blow by. very pristine

  • I agree, Caddys suck and so does chevy. Put it this way ALL GM sucks. Mercedes is way better than Caddys! Tommysbrowncaddy is a dumb nut.

  • damn right GM sucks

  • OH YEA

  • quit hatin on gm they just act stupid some of the time ...

    i like the new 09 corvette zr1 ....

only thing with a caddy is that they dont have a diesel production ...

    used to but horrible rep.

  • How much horsepower 88, 108?

  • the turbo 3.0L has about 120 rated horses

im betting there is some tricks to get them to have over 130 near stock

  • You probably have a hard on looking at all these videos of diesel mercedes because yopu commanted on all of them Tommybrownnose !

  • sweet. It twice as fast as my 84 300d.

  • and like 10 times as fast as my 240D

  • Thats prety good for an old diesel.

    Gotta love old mercs

  • It'd be awesome if you could do a video of the vavle adjustment process. My car doesn't move like that... geeeze! It's cool to know it's possible though.

  • valves should be adjusted as part of maintance actually... if they are out of adjustment badly they can hurt performace, but not a whole lot without loud noticeble valve train noise...

i have no idea what he means by a diesel purge... perhaps cranking up the fuel... i donno...

  • purging is just fancy for injecion system supercleaning. yeah u should do a valve adj

recomended every 10k miles i waited til 20 and they were a bit off once done it ran like a charm and had twice as much power.

the valves were good on the intake and off on the exhaust by like .4-0.5 inch

  • Stop being the "ugly American".

Oh, I'm a U.S. citizen, and my family has been living here since the mid 1600s.

    On a different note-

    I love my 240D!

If I could, I'd put a 5-speed in it, and take the engine and rebuild it with nitrided steel crankshaft, pistol-oil spritzer thingys, and a turbo!

Either way, 35-40mpg freeway, 188K, better handling than any P.O.S. sedan coming out of detriot, plus it's DIESEL!!!

I bought it with 165K, think I should do the valves and diesel purge?

  • yup. i want to stick a 7.3 powerstroke in my mustang. but that ain't happening anytime soon.

  • problem is premium stock 3.0 litre turbo diesels from europe have better or same performance then supercharged Mustang but MPG about 40. So it is not about the displacement. Ordinary stock family sedan AUDI A4 or coupe A5 with 3.0 litre diesel has 60 in 5.5sec, and still makes 40 MPG.

  • but they do not pass emissions tests in the us

  • last generation follows ULEV standards in all 50 states. Mercedes-Benz and his 3 litre diesel have passed smog standards 3 or 4 ys ago. AUDI is not probably strong enough to intruduce diesels on US market and BMW I am not sure already selling (or preparing for sell) his twin turbo 3 litre diesel with great performance and fantastic fuel economy. Gasoline V8 is really men's choice wo questions, but for daily driving or for interstate crusing a little bit fuel wasting I guess

  • diesels are meant to last a lifetime, mercedes diesels even longer

  • We have a 1980 300CD. When I'm with my dad one night cruising in our 300CD, the road was clear, then, we drove it up to 75 mph. Our 300CD has no tachometer. Instead, it is a clock that is as huge as the tach of the turbo version. It also has 85 mph speedometer instead of 120. That is far faster compared to our 300CD.

  • Not bad for a car this old!! Nice one

  • for what it is, rather impressive

  • amazing. i am part of a car dealership that collects old mercedes, with an emphasis on diesels, and we've never had one accelerate that fast. i did just do a diesel purge on one but havent adjusted the valves yet. hopefully it'll have that same effect.

  • excellent car, only stupid americans i guess do not as usual understand what is a diesel car, and how much better it is in al ways against gas cars. millions of examples. 70 percent of european market are diesel ones idiots americanos

  • not bad! but my 306 d-turbo would batter it to death!

  • Thanks for this great video. The clatter always give me goosebumps. Weird, but whatever.

  • Well you can't fill up at McDonalds by filtering some grease with a new focus either.. or KFC and have exhaust that smells like fried chicken or french fries...

  • meaning what?

  • soooooo...... what's the ajustment ?

  • My earlier comment regarding my Crown Vic was to point out that this car isn't fast. 'Incredible acceleration' isn't what this car has. 'Incredible acceleration' isn't what my car has. Sure the car will last a billion miles, but it's still slow as hell.

BTW before giving me any diesel-engine longitivity speech, the 4.6 in my car has been known to regularly exceed 300k-400k miles.

  • Dont forget that you are in the early 80's and this is a Diesel engine. At that time this was the fastest diesel car in the world.

And nowadays you can still drive it in the streets with acceptable speed and fuelconsumption. There are not many cars of which you can tell this.

  • yeah. but see you are talking about an 80's diesel. diesel technology majorly improved in the last 8 years. a 3 liter diesel had 65hp in 1979, today it has 250. old merc diesels simply are slow. but they are efficient and last centurys.

if you look at the fact that the regular 300CD had 80hp and the turbo 109, the coupé is very fast. my mercedes 300GD takes 23.5 seconds from 0-60 but fuel economy is 22mpg and it lasts and lasts and lasts

  • Congrats, but OM617s are going for 500k-750k before anything major needs to be done. Show me a crown vic that can do that.

  • But your crown victo has a V8 gas and we are talking about a 5 cylinder inline. 75% of the w123 built between 1976 and 1985 are still on the road; where are the crown victo ? Yes, scrap ward !

  • Yup, the thousands of 200k, 300k mile Crown Vic taxis in service are most definitely in the scrap yard... I would rather get 300k out of a car that can actually hit 100 mph this week than 500k out of a car that can barely hold highway speed going up a hill without flooring it.

  • and the hundred thousand mercedes benzes 1980-1990's in europe and africa, and arab countries are STILL not in scrapyards, they are STILL being used as the most common taxi outside the U.S .

yes, we do not drive crown vics outside of north america.

  • @sranjesuper crown victorias are shittier :) oh wait way more shittier

  • @sranjesuper I definitely agree with you.

And concerned people can make a Google Search : "Greek Taxi Driver Gregorios Sachinidis" or "Mercedes 240D 4.6 million kilometers"

  • Please dont tell me your gage only read 80km/hr! And dont tell me that was your top speed.

  • The gage is in miles per hour... 80 mph = 128 km/h.

Still not breaking any speed record ;-)

  • I was being sarcastic lol

  • and what EXACTLY is your point? I kinda missed it...

  • u can convert a diesel merc to a light truck. which makes lower taxes and insurance. plus, they are free from taxes if they are like 30 years old. so ure driving as free as possible, and they puke carbon dioxide which support the global warming. they puke the most and can drive free. our REAL light truck, Nissan King Cab without any cyclic converter (how it spells), is getting 45% higher taxes because of the converting to light trucks. in this case, diesel mercedes. u get my point?

  • like I give a damn, and why the hell would I convert a classic benz into a stupid truck???

    makes no sense whatsoever...

  • they remove the rear seats and put some kind of fence. cheaper to own maybe. ask a owner of one.

  • get more more boost and it will be a beast

  • take good care of that car, man.. wish I had one of these..

  • Thats a nice merc man, really clean

  • nice video, and nice benz. i would get one of those, and even though diesels will run for ever, im just afraid of parts and labor will be too expensive. i heard when stuff goes wrong with mercedes, you better have a big wallet. im impressed though, very nice.

  • Great Car, ( I had same car for 2-3 years, but, cold and bad mechanic killed that car, It was my love, I used to dive to New York City, great power. and its seats are the most confortable in any cars..(coups seats are much bigger than 4 doors)..good video

  • lol mercedes has torture seats. thats why they change to saab seats. ure a cow?

  • I don't get it, torture seats?

don't be ridiculous, they are anything but.

  • torture, yes. very uncomforable. in cabs, when its a merc, they always have bought recaro seats so u no need pain in your back (even in new).

  • its a diesel dude

  • and not to mention its an 85 (7 years older) with a 6 cylinder, where as you have a V8. putting those 2 cars up together is not a good match.

  • its actauly a 5 cylinder

  • ahh u idiot its a benz turbo diesel.. not a race car... buy a diesel same year same specs and race him he'll dust you!.... by the way ill line up anyday with my 89 taurus sho... wanna get embarrased by 6 cylinders

  • cool

  • Nice, I want to get my hands on one of these and/or one of the elusive bmw 324td's here in the states.

  • That engine at idle, is the sweetest sounding engine I have ever heard.

Ps, you sound like Hank from King of the Hill

  • What's the difference(s) between a 1979 MBenz (300 D) and a (300 SD)? Please respond if you have info. Thanks.

  • 300SD has a OM617 Turbo engine. W116 and W126

    300D is a none turbo OM617. W123

  • after 1982 the w123 300d had a turbocharger

  • the car you see is the 300 D (W 123), the 300 SD (W 126) is the big brother of the w 123 but has the same engine.

  • hybrids are shit. everyone knows about how the manufacturing of the batteries are worse than the gas it saves.

  • LOL that's funny. All most every engines that are force induction are fast. I prefer gasoline engines.

  • most semi trucks are turbo'd and yet none of them are real fast... growing up all of our school buses had turbos and again not fast. Turbo diesels are not meant to be fast-just good on fuel and good torque. Don't make general statements you can't back up.

  • Nice video, I just love how diesels sound

  • i luv my 1987 mercedes sedan DT (DIESEL TURBO) aren't they they the best cars ever by mercedes.

  • I agree...there is too much hype about hybrid cars, a diesel electric hybrid is the best of both worlds.. aside.. the company car i used to work with was a highlander hybrid and it got rotten gas mileage the electronic Fuel mileage gauge showed a highest MPG rating of 15MPG, this is the problem with hybrids.. the gas engine comes on after 34 mph..

  • Celloprof, you talk too much and why the hell do you guys always argue about things that have absolutely nothing to do with the movie???
