this movie was great , i have it on DVD. i wasnt sure i was going to like it at first, cuz i found it at a thrift store for only 3 dollars, but i loved it!! :)
I think it's mixture; a flow between sad...but not totally, and play a bit feature of happiness...
Yeah, it's really really really hard to describe how I feel...
Even in the end; the 'dead' scenes 'somehow' look happy for me (since the character feels no more pain - or discover their own meaning of life...or something)
It's........a film that we lack the words to say :)
Ok it did have some good elements in it but in my opinion is was very depressing. Every minute it cut to a scene of someone dead or being bullied and there was no happy scenes really apart from the kite part and philia's chat with the girl over the phone and at the restaurant.
:(. Hmm it was ok but there are many more great Japanese movies then this..
I saw this film when I lived alone in Tokyo in my mid teens. I was so lonely there and I watched this film over and over.. haha. Silly now, but at the time I loved coming home and escaping into it.
I like this movie, but I've gotta admit that some of the deepest crap I've ever seen usually from either a Hispanic or English director. This is taken into example by great movies like Children of Men, Pan's Labyrinth, No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood, Precious (More comparable to this film), etc. While I enjoy Japanese cinema at times, they've yet to truly hit me with a completely engaging drama.
a friend showed me that movie in Tokyo two years ago. I couldn't remember the title and i just woke up with this sound in my head "it's tchou...It's tchou tchou". Although just Chou chou . And there it is...beauty invading my brain again...
I know what you mean. I rented this when I wa sin high school and watched three times that day, now im studying Japanese cinema and I owe it mainly to this film. One of the saddest and poignant films that I have ever seen.
No film has ever hit me this hard personally. And despite what flaws it may have, I'd have to say this is the greatest film I've ever seen just because of the emotional impact that it has had on me.
i walk to the end of the road, i open my lips, it all comes out, long and sounding raspy, a taste of blood left in my throat, i am out of breath, sobbing, it feels good somehow, a moment empty, then, i fill up, a force i know magnetic, heavy in my shoes, unmovable, i stand
All about Lily Chou-Chou is a awesome picture. Great represent of japan culture and that what is evolve into modern world. Great picture. I really love that movie.
The song is acutally called "Kaifuku Suru Kizu". "Arabesque" plays during Kuno-san's attack I think... I know it plays in Kill Bill Vol 1 when The Bride enters Hattori Hanzo's attic full of swords, but the song is credited as "Wounds That Heal" on that movie.
Every College should have this as an educational video on violence. Beautifully acted, very subtle,non-pretentious. Just life!! Another one to add to my movie catalogue, right next to Larry Clarks "Kids"

@hanito294 how is a movie being happy or depressing connected to the movie being good or bad?

the sky turns gold and red around me
the sun giving all
before the night takes it's own,
i heard it say that, before,
i wipe my face with my sleeve
i look straight,
sling my bag over my shoulder
i am not naive
i'v got the scars to show.
I ride into the sun.

No, this song is definetly called Arabesque. Kaifuku suru Kizu is a different song, with stronger and more high-pitched vocals from Lily (Salyu).
