  • omg if they would've played this song live when i saw them i'd shit my pants like 12 times over

  • They are both awesome, but theres really only 2 of the same people, And there music is very dif.

  • Paul Hinojos from ATDI (bassist) is also in the TMV as guitar and sound manipulations. Full time since '05..

  • well na not anymore

they asked hinojos to leave during the production of octahedron

  • a little disappointed in the live vocals. i've seen them live and they weren't that great then either.

not that i can do any better, those are some hard notes to hit

  • oh i was talking about the singing. i've watched a boatload of live videos and it seems they have better performances some days than others, mainly cedric's singing.

but yeah, they are musical geniuses

  • Hear how complex the compositions are in the studio? Try and recreate that live.

  • its THEIR music... and they are such a fucking artistic band, let them do what they want live, you should feel honored to even be watching that kind of art happening

doesn't matter how hard to play it is..

  • ive seen them live twice and both times his voice is spot on, but in every video i watch, even ones of the gigs i went to it sounds shit. recording equipment unable to handle his amazing vocals? :P

  • Is that at Mac Hall? If so it was radical. I hope they come back this year.

  • I love this band.

  • I hope they will come to Sweden soon. :)

  • cedric makes me all sexual

    :)

  • He's dancing and getting into the music.

  • My bad.

  • lol :]

  • Nah man Sparta and At the drive·in are dwarfed compared to the Mars Volta. They are/were good but not this good.

  • I don't think it is fair to compare ATDI with TMV, they are two amazing, completely different bands...well, maybe not completely.

  • seen em live twice, they're fucking amazing.

Cedric has amazing stage prescence, and sings perfectly when you hear it live, without going through microphones and youtube

  • 16 days.. and i'll see them;)

  • Great song.

  • perfect..

  • That's some class footage of a very cool song. Cheers bud!

  • I get to see them on 420 in chicago! Hells yeah! *High as Fuck!*

  • Cedric's jacket is pretty sweet

  • Great band, wish I could see them live

  • superfico kappa kappa hey

  • DOOOD I WAS at this show!! The dank made the whole arena look like something out of a scary movie. These doods sound just as good live as they do on they're cdz. PLUS they don't sell out or conform for the mainstream. MARS POR VIDA YO

  • this song is nuts ! love it

    cedric rockin' da jacket there

  • this song gave me seizures the first time I heard it on the jukebox

  • ROFL

  • they have constantly stayed true to themselves by evolving their sound to different heights to where they have a set of many different songs with a recognizable quality that only they themselves could produce. you have to open your ears because you are limiting your ears to just the sound off of deloused which if every one decides to listen to everything like that, music wont really evolve.

  • this is to the people saying that everything after deloused was shit....... Yes, deloused was aa amazing album, i agree. but frances and amputechture were amazing in their own ways as well. the mars volta's founding members, as im sure you know, were once part of At the drive in. they left because they felt they were limited to one sound and they didn't want to be stuck with that. so they created a band that had no limits and that is the mars volta.

  • This was amazing live in sydney when i saw them, everyone had their own dancing space and just felt the music.

also i love the 3 bars of 4/4 and 1 bar of 5/4 break down bit.

  • god why the fuck did he stop the camera there, i love that next part, damnit

  • The intro to Tetragrammaton is the fucking best thing ever.

  • CHHOOOONNNN Fucking ace!

  • um theresateri1.....fuck you, one of your comments, waste of lives..umm, i think you were the one that took the time to research how a fuckin song by a band you dont even like relates to a bullshit religion like christianity, go jerk off to the bible of sums

  • Indeed, lots of karate kicks right at the start.

  • wicked.

  • I like the last part......Six pentacle dice~~~lalala~~~

  • There are no words to express how much I hate dumbass Christians like you. Not hating against Christianity in general but you people are freaks.

  • hey come on now, give them time to think... pretty sure they'll figure it out at some point lol

  • Really awesome, but where's the rest of the song? :(

  • I was there

  • jesus fucking christ get out of here you fucking idiot

  • the mars volta live some how sucks on you tube see it your self its so different and you don't need to be stoned it sounds so much better and this is not bad i like it a bit more the cd but not to big on this cd i Like Frances the mute best =) but its nice the mars volta are new talent to see

  • once again if they dont sound like a cd, who does? they are touring. singing and playing constantly you try it. i completely disagree i saw them and they sounded like gold to me.

  • that left handed guitar player man make the chords scary....in a fripp´way

  • just enjoy the fucking music

  • fuck off fuck off fuck off fuck off fuck off fuck off

  • hahaha, man, don´t tell me that u really believe in armaggedon, real life is already too busy to spend your time that way

  • Wow! You're pretty crazy, and not in the fun loving way.

  • What the hell are you talking about? A small theme on their album Amputechture which includes the songs "Tetragrammaton" and "Meccamputechture" questions the hypocrisies of organized religion and whether God is a loving and forgiving god or a punishing and vengeful one.

  • I agree, if only god existed

  • i saw them at bonarroo and i was surprised at how good they sounded; all the bootlegs and online vids i had seen definitely didn't do justice to their performance.

  • frances bad? amputecture bad? these albums are incredible; the sonic range of frances the mute is absolutely terrific...the horns and strings in cassandra gemini create some really awesome sounds, and i must say that TMV have never failed in their inventiveness...the only thing that i mourn is the loss of jon, but then again i think that everyone does...

  • DrO makes some very good points, for all his efforts in creating Ward-esque soundscapes Omar fails. Their early efforts were brilliant, Francis The Mute was severely depressing and Aputechture was mediocre at best. A fantastic band, but one who seem to have lost their bearings.

  • ... I digress: Comatorium sounds great on the album, which was likely the result of nothing short of a billion takes (especially on cedric tonedeaf-zavala-toomanylastnames-bixler's part), a billion chops, and a billion segmentations.

Don't ever see TMV live if you are a musician and wish to keep enjoying them.

  • I disagree with the last comment. I saw them and i have to say i very much enjoyed them. And dont attempt to say im not a musician. There is nothing wrong with a little improvisation. And frances the mute is a great album if you sit down and listen to it without expecting DITC, even though some of the extra ambience is a little over done.

  • ... I've always had the feeling that they've been trying to recreate his dubs powerfully unsuccessfully since Ward passed. The random ambiences and stupid sound effects strewn about frances and amputechture are not only uncalled for, but uninteresting, repetative, and downright annoying. I think they saw those moments as the only true genuinity they had on the music scene that nobody had yet been so acclaimed for in live music and kept trying as hard as they could to capture it again...

  • ... My favorite thing about TMV are the groupies who proclaim their musical genius, when they don't even realize that the brilliance of Deloused lay not only in the melodies (which i will admit are surprisingly pleasing and impressive compositions) , but through the mixing works of the late Sublime dubmaster and audio engineering master Jeremy Michael Ward...

  • i loved the mars volta until 3 occurances:

    1. I saw them live and noticed Omar's flawed/dirty spacing was a result of his absolutely abysmal technique and that cedric cannot sing for a sack of shit in the middle of a pasture.

    2. Frances the Mute

    3. Amputechture

That's what happens when you don't take professional lessons, kids...

  • you only expand one way....please go listen to some emo music

  • I saw them in cleveland with the peps and they decided to improvise for 45 minutes and totally sucked. It may have worked in a room half the size but not in an arena. I have seen them completly rule too though. nice vid

  • this song is the best performed song i've ever seen at a live concert, and i saw it a month or two before the album was released. one of the most rythmically expressive songs i know. too bad crowds are so lame at shows these days. everyone just stands there and takes pictures with their camera phones. let the rhythm move you! this song was so powerful live i was baffled afterwards at how unappreciative the crowd was. but i guess most everyone was there for the chili peppers.

  • the mars volta are sacred...that is all you must accept

  • you suck balls "waves". the only thing you're waving is your dick in public, because you can't get anyone to willingly look at your dick otherwise... you play it asshole!

  • Total wank fest.

  • No, that's what happens in your bedroom and bathroom.

  • Ha. Good one.

  • At about :12 , you can hear one of Omar's rare mess ups. That was the only time ive ever heard him screw up unintentionally.

  • Yeah, definately check out King Crimson if you dig TMV. Omar has the same weird linear playing style as Robert Fripp. Like, instead of playing a lot of chords, he plays single note picking. And weird effects. Check out the Discipline album.

  • its good, but i dont like cedrics vocals in this..

  • yeah its kinda not perfect

  • who said anything about perfect?

    just didnt like em

    lol you ass

  • this could easily be the best track on ampetechture. i need to see these guys live already

  • IT IS the best on amputhecture*

  • fuck off what a stupid guy think you people knew and understand why mars are the best thing in the whole history of music so, ignore them its jealous because they don't understand their music, thats is my favorite track!!^^

  • i love mars volta but there not the best thing in muisc history. go to an arts school like me for 4 years and then you'll really learn about this kind of music there down low on the chain go listen to some King Crimson and Yes and The Fuckin Champs. Those are some amazing bands. If you love mars volta like i do then you will fall in love with those bands

  • yeah! well i said that because i was mad, but, they're something cool, but for me the best fucking thing in history of music its zepp, but i take your advice, i will heard king, i read omar plays similar than crimson's guitarrist =D

  • touche

  • lol you had to go to an "arts" schools for 4 years to know who king crimson and yes are?

  • no but those are the only bands that we studied that you'll find music on on the internet

  • The bassist has some serious energy.

  • I think cedric had a cold that day or something. When they played in montreal, his singing was IMPECCABLE.

  • there still orange amps they just spray painted them brown i saw them live and got to see the amps up close outside the paint was chipping off and they still have the orange logo on the back

  • does omar not play on orange cabs anymore? dude whats up with that. his signature tone- is GONE!

  • Exelente tema ...buenisimos sentimientos

  • i love ced's voice. come on what other rock singer out there today will even ATTEMPT to do that "glossalalia coats my skin" part. i think he sounds great in this vid. fucking. his vocals blow your face off with intensity. but it can also be sweet and soothing...its just great.

  • damn right!

  • fuck that! his sings as good as you can sing on this kind of track. his voice is amazing, and if he dont hit the key all the time, whatever!! its strange notes, and he does the best. the chorus is amazing! let me see anyone of you gus try that shit!!

  • I can't believe the people who down The Mars Volta. They are the greatest band in this world right now. No one can compare to them ever, no one. His vocals don't sound exactly like the CD but that doesn't matter. He sounds great! and what he does is tough shit. Only losers put things down. Can I hear you sing or make up something like Cedric. Oh, you can't. Then leave your shitty comments to yourself dickweed. -When.I.O.D...

  • im honestly not crazt about this band. i saw them live with the chili peppers, but i think they are all great musicians, and the singer has a very good voice. i just think they got little to into the effects, kinda like they were trying to sound like pink floyd. i think they kinda over did it. i couldnt tell when one song stopped, and when another started.

  • You don't listen to The Mars Volta, that is why you couldn't tell when one song ended. But when they play live, they change it up so it doesn't sound exactly the same. That's why it's cool to see them live... RHCP are great, but they just play a 3 min. song and then break, another 3 min. song, then break... Mars volta played hour and a half straight of non-stop music. That's what makes them amazing. I might have just as well played a Chili pepper's CD instead of seeing them live.

  • you know, its good to see a mars volta concert where the fans dont all have afro's. immitation may be the highest form of flattery, but at a concert, i want to see the band, not 100 afros in front of me.

  • and that's 1/4 of that behemoth of a song. amazing job.

  • he doesnt sound bad, if you listed carefully the studio version you will notice that the song is like that, in a very high voice tone, but in this video the instruments are too loud so cedric doesnt sounds well

  • i had front row to this concert and it was amazing!!! cedric should have monitors tho cause i dont think he can hear himself

  • Cedric sounds terrible there, the band is shit hot though!!! I've only seen a couple of mars volta vids, anyone know of any where his vocal's top notch?

  • awesome song, awesome band

  • Strange though, that there should be such a major gulf between their live and studio works when they are so closely linked to the best Live Band I have ever had the honour of watching: the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

  • Hmmm..I think you mean Yes.

  • Yes? The band Yes? Well... I doubt they would contend for the title of 'the best live band i've ever had the honour of watching', as i've never seen them live. ((meaning, never been to one of their concerts)).

Having said that, they are good from what i've heard of them.

what's this about kiedis using autotuning. i wouldn't rule it out, but the idea surprises me.

  • Let's establish something, Cedric isn't singing out of tune, he's singing out of key. He has an amazing voice, but it is better suited to the studio than the stage, which is a shame.

TMV are my favourite band, yes, but I'll admit that they could improve significantly if they settled down to a more classic, relaxed approach. Cedric might benefit from some in-ear stage monitors too, i get the feeling that he can't hear what he's doing out there. (Continued)

  • The song is about demonic posession (among other things) it sounds disjointed and chaotic for a very good reason.

  • michaellund8922, you just posted the most outstanding comment on this site. God bless you.

  • it sucks, my ears are seriously hurt now

  • MARS VOLTA RULES!!

  • Stop arguing you fucking pussies...This music is template of your souls!!!!

  • they were so damn good at rhcp

and this song is pure genius

  • and it is ONE fucking video only because this video isnt very good that doesnt mean they completely suck, actually they are a very good band and they do very good shows

  • i agree with michaellund8922, STOP THROWING SHIT TO EACH OTHER!!!

  • I don't understand why everyone has to rip on everyones music. Every second comment seems to be either complete praise for the band or complete hatred. And often the response of the people that praise it to the people who hate it is something ridiculous like "GO BACK TO LISTENING TO YOUR MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE". I personally like Mars Volta, ALOT! But that doesn't mean i'm going to rip on anyone who doesn't like them or state they have no taste in music.

  • very true...agreed

  • i agree with you but at the same time it pisses me off so god damn much when i see some asshole make a hateful comment on a band i love so much.

  • hey, did they play songs together

  • lol.

  • RHCP and TMV are all really good friends...thats why they tour together

  • I think the only reason they played with RHCP is because the guitar for this album was heavily done mostly by John Frusciante of RHCP, and they have a history with the band as Flea did bass on their first album. So RHCP fans quit whining, the chili peppers themselves support this music.

  • inspiring? if you mean inspiring everyone to kill themselves instead of listening to their musical (out on a limb) waves of diarrhea's, then yes

  • fuck you guys they were fucking awesome in philly opening for RHCP and inspiring.

  • y is there no S in my name

  • i was there last night...it was amazing it usually takes a smart person to understand what there doing though

  • I agree with boogiechillen123. I just saw RHCP in Atlanta last night. And i had to sit through and hour of this garbage. At first i was confused, i thought their mic's were not set up right or something cuz it was a bunch of screaming and other crap no one could understand. I wanted to die. Everyone around me was like wtf is that noise they are making. I've taken doodies with better melodic tones than that

  • I felt the same way at the show here in Ottawa. They really picked the wrong band to tour with. A very very small portion of RHCP fans like the Mars Volta sound.

  • Yeah I went to that show as well, and all I can say is that I was a bit dissappointed. Not with their sound, but that they weren't on longer. I was craving for more. I was sitting in awe through The Mars Volta. You must've not noticed the Led Zeppelin chords they played through the jam part. RHCP's light show was too distracting, and I found myself being bored through them. And I doubt your "doodies" can play the bongo drums like Marcel.

  • oh man what a great video. I can't wait to see them this weekend at VEGOOSE!!!

  • wow...cedric sounds horrible. i loved this band before jon left and they got absurdly wankerish with each album...what a shame. they had so much potential.

  • dude he sounds fuckin sick in this video and i was at this concert. You deffinately should brush up on what makes music magical dude. You seem really dead beat. Listen to how much the song chances. Its like you didnt even watch the video.

  • TMV albums interest me less and less.. they need Flea again on bass (played on first album). I agree that Cedric really cant pull off anything live.. I saw this band in Atlanta two years ago..it was sick but vocals were pretty consistently shwag

  • You do realize that Omar wrote the bass parts for Flea?

  • It's not the writing, man. It's the feeling and the energy flea gives off when he plays.

  • this band sucks so bad. i still hate them for making me sit through their garbage set when i saw the RHCP play in Sacramento. the tards volta are lame and they have shit for music.

  • Go back to anal raping your frat brothers.

  • BRO RAPE! (Anyone who knows derrickcomedy would get that, and for those who did, you're welcome.)

  • go fuck yourself, try listening to one of their albums

  • jesus christ Cedric sounds amazing in this

  • How come all of their publicity photos only show two members? It looks tlike there are at lest 6 members in this.

  • the mars volta is omar and cedric, there music is preformed by the mars volta group

  • Because those two members write The Mars Volta's songs. The rest is a live band put together that plays the music those two members write... If I am wrong, please correct me.

  • when i saw them live, it was the best performance i've ever seen. it's all improv, so if you don't like 30+ minutes of guitar and sax and whatnot, then don't go to the show and don't whine about it.

  • It was 30 minutes of off key guitar, unsychronised bass and drums, and chipmunk like singing. Not to mention the unbearably high pitched and annoying flute and sax. Honestly, to like this band, you either have to be deaf or spanish. I hoped for death their entire performance opening for the chili peppers. I hope that one day, their tour bus will explode, saving us all from the atonal, off-beat crap they call music.

  • Hahah, you like RHCP??? Now that's some halarity right there. I can understand liking Frusciante's solo albums. I guess you fit right in with the fraternity/sorority type of audience they attract who get drunk before the show and boo the opening acts.

  • Actually, I'm in High school, have never consumed alcohol or drugs, and still clapped for The Mars Volta out of respect.

Good job not jumping to conclusions, though.

  • Your reasoning definitely sounds like someone who is in high school. You do an excellent job of contradicting yourself with comments like, "Honestly, to like this band, you either have to be deaf or spanish." That's a nice little assumption right there, and borderline prejudice. When you get older and get some education under your belt you'll learn how to reason. Keep digging the RHCP though.

  • Listen, going back to that comment. I realize now it was rude and stupid.

I thought about it last night and realized that if the bands we support share mutual respect, then we should too. I can't call myself an RHCP fan if I'm being an ass to Mars Volta fans. I hope you see it the same way.

  • By the way, the Spanish comment was on how latin music occasionally uses scales that slightly differ from traditional western ones. I was not implying any racism.

  • Whatever hitler.

  • Wow, how mature. First of all, Hitler didn't kill mexicans. Second of all, it does use different scales. I have the utmost repect for spanish people. Please don't give me that "Whatever, Hitler" bullcrap.

  • Oh, so, JUST becuase they're roots are hispanic, they're Mexicans, huh? Oh, that is TOTALLY RACIST. Yeah, I'm kidding. Some people use "hyperbole" which is an exaggeration of the truth for humorous effect. I use it, too. And I used it then, so quit throwing words at people and go eat a goddamn Twinkie.

  • Sorry for seeing your humor at the time, but there are a lot of douchebags on Youtube. Please, don't treat me like some kind of retarded 12-year-old because I didn't catch on.

  • *sorry for NOT seeing

  • Yeah, it happens. It's kind of hard to show verbal tone when typing, so I understand your mistake.

  • Alright, cool. Glad to see some maturity around here.

  • i agree , cedric sounds like crap in this video , but than again with all of his jumping around ,he's more likely just out of breath.

  • I saw them live and it kicked ass!

  • this is one of the few good quality live vids of TMV on You Tube.

    thanks

  • ok this confirms it. mars volta fans r a bunch of tone deaf morons. i like the albums but they cant pull it off live by a long shot. i'm beginning to wonder if he even sings on the albums cos he cant sing live for shit. if u disagree ur deaf, wrong and stupid beyond comprehension.

  • i agree with you to a point, it very hard to listen to any song from this album live, cedric should have understood the difficulty of the pitches he would have to be able to sing live while writting the lyrics..however past albums sung by cedric in most, not all, cases sounded good..

  • did you ever think that maybe you are the one that is tone deaf?

  • wow what a question. thank u tripwire, u opened up my eyes... now back to reality that comment also qualifies u for being "stupid beyond comprehension", congratulations! this is not a matter of opinion. u either hear how out of tune he's singing or u dont. u obviously cant hear the difference. cedric needs to use autotune like peter ander's wife and anthony kiedis.

  • Cedric and The Mars Volta are known for performing their songs different live than on the recordings; that doesn't mean their worse. I think "Tetragrammaton" sounds much better live than on the album. I have many bootlegs of The Mars Volta over the years and they have sounded really good, especially Cedric, over the course of the past two years. Listen to some more live recordings and then come spread your bullshit here. Kiedis is notorious for sounding terrible live...and on recordings.

  • yea the falsetto parts are def way off in the beginning and around 1:59ish

  • thank u trisma. i love being right. ur hilarious tripwire. i'm all for live improv but this isnt cedric being some kind of musical genius coming up with gold live. this is painful to listen to. u must b a real piece of shit to think this sounds better than the album version. i bet ur the kind of fuckwit who plays a whole set with an out of tune guitar not realising how shit u sound. go on, reply and make us all laugh.

  • Actually your presumptions are incorrect and you've proven yourself to be an idiot. Not once did you acknowledge to listening to any of their other bootlegs. I play my guitar in tune, but you probably shove it up your ass.

  • i've heard other bootlegs and seen them live once. and even if sometimes he does sing well its not enough to make up for the many many times he's sounded like an embarrassment to music. the point i'm making is that for a band at their level to sound so shit live (mainly due to cedric) and at the same time get so much praise for their live show is a joke. i'm making a valid point and theres nothing u can say which would prove otherwise. the evidence is there ur just too stupid to realise.

  • Listen up Aussie, I'm sure "other bootlegs" means you listened to one other show back in 2003..probably the Electric Ballroom DVD. My point was that from 2005 on Cedric has really improved as a vocalist and the bad tightened up their sound. Good sound alone does not make for a great live show. The reason The Mars Volta is praised by critics and fellow artists is that they incorporate a physical, sometimes chaotic, energy on stage that is not very prevalent among other rock acts.

  • i never said anything about their sound or stage energy. and i agree, they do have great stage energy. but that doesnt change the fact that cedric sings like a dog a lot of the time. its ok, mayb some day u'll miraculously develop a sense of pitch and realise how stupid ur making urself look by having this argument.

  • who the fuck cares? if its painful to your ears then dont fucking listen you cunt face. fucking retard. calling people tone deaf because they actually enjoy his singing on stage is retarded. people have their own opionion on how he sounds on stage. and even if it isnt as good on stage as it is on the album wtf do you expect him to do? take away those awesome melodies of his and tone them down just so they can fit your oh so wonderful ears needs? fuck no.

  • if you cant stand his singing so much on stage or you can't appreciate how hard he's working to try and give a good performance then don't fucking go to a live concert. OR BETTER YET DON'T LOOK FOR A LIVE CONCERT ON YOUTuBE DUMBASS!

  • eat a dick u fucking idiot. firstly, i can do whatever the fuck i want. secondly, i'm only stating facts not opinions. and the fact is that cedric is a fucking pathetic live singer. i'm not saying he's a bad performer or improvisor. he just cant sing in tune. its like listening to a drummer who cant keep time and fucks the songs up for the rest of the band. and finally, go fuck urself and die u fucking scum.

  • Get a life, dickweed. Stop arguing how your "facts" are correct, and anyone who disagrees with your "completely correct statements" are stupid. Go find a hobby that isn't bashing people who you don't agree with.

  • who the fuck r u to say what i should or shouldn't b doing. "get a life" and let me worry about my hobbies.
