I read with regret the comments below of how Ms. Bass had to fight for her royalties. How many times will this story repeat itself. By now people should know that the music business eats its own. In my opinion, these young people needs to get in and get out as soon as they can. Long legal battles only make the lawyers rich and leave them in destitution and bitter. I admire those celebrities who peep the racket, get out very early, and never look back.
I read about a good lawyer, who set up a foundation that goes and tracks down the label owners and grabs them by their leechin' throats, and wrings out the dough that rightfully belongs to the artists, and gives it all to them or their heirs, minus only court filing fees and such. He's a music fan and topnotch lawyer with a righteous soul.
listen to fontella's more recent stuff with cinematic orchestra. she is amazing. the best vocalist the world has ever know. no one can convince me otherwise.
Fontella was underrated. Though it wasn't dealing directly with womens rights because Aretha Franklin wouldn't be recognized as well as the Supremes. Fontella has as much soul as Otis Redding and James Brown.
By listening to these previously unfamiliar tracks and reading the comments hear I am learning what an underrated singer Fontella Bass was, and how she never seemed to get the recognition or the rewards that she deserved. Has anyone here ever met her?
Even with the success of "Rescue Me" it was many years and much litigation before Bass would be credited with her share of the songwriting and the royalties she actually deserved from the song. Some sources credit the climate for racial discrimination and the treatment of women in the music business for these issues at that point in time. Again, in 1993 Bass sued American Expressr for the unauthorized use of the song in a commercial for the credit card giant.
Aretha sounds like her actUAlly...she was round a few years before Aretha....unsung for sure!!!

the only reason she had to fight was because back then, black artists got next to nothing. and it didnt help that she is a woman either.
