There are also practical reasons to crop and dock, mostly for the dog. Should be illegal? Yeah ok, we should definitely have more laws for this sort of thing.
You think it should be illegal? Perhaps tail cropping should be too then? It's done to give it a fierce look? Umm, no it's done to make the dog look like a Doberman, as cropping is the tradition. As it is with schnauzers, great danes, and many other breeds. There are also benefits to ear cropping too, dramatically reducing the occurance of ear infections and hemotomas.
Dogs ears are needed to help cool its temperature and this is especially the case with large eared dogs like the Doberman. So they are not there just for nothing. I think such a practice should be illegal and does nothing for the appearance of the dog except give it a 'fierce'look which is far from a well trained doberman is.
I respect your decision to do what you did - its just I don't agree with it.
It was my wife and I's decision to crop his ears and I dont regret it. The procedure was carefully done by an experienced ( 20 + years of doberman ear cropping ) vet. We were given pain medication and never needed to use it. Vito was up within hours as if nothing happened.I think its sad that people make a big deal out of ear cropping. Its neither cruel nor unusual when done properly and there are far more important things to take issue with in this world.
