@Thedoctorsbiggestfan No, the console on wich she is playing is the "general console" to all 233 stops of all 5 Organs. The console which you can see behind in the large organ is a mechanical one, you can there only play 77 stops of the large organ, not more!
Well, saying "the Loudest" is kinda general. For example, you mean a particular stop, or, the result of many (or all) stops together?
The loudest stop is considered to be the Grand Ophicleide in the Boardwalk Hall Organ, Atlantic City, New Jersey. Since this is the biggest organ in the world (33000 ~ pipes),
i would say its also the loudest, if you put all the stops together. But what also matters is the room in which the organ is placed the acoustics, how far you are from it and ETC
Spanish organs are pretty loud, also romantic period french organs. Organs are limited by the space in which their sound waves develop and wind power but they do get over 120 dB. Concert speakers are unlimited but organs never distort.
The loudest single stop in the world is usually considered to be the Grand Ophicleide at the Atlantic City Convention Hall. It's on 100" of wind pressure. However, the State Trumpet at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine has a claim to make as well. It is designed to be a louder than your standard Ophicleide, though the one in Atlantic City is far from standard. The State Trumpet stop is on 50" of wind pressure. Keep in mind that the sound of a stop at 8' pitch is more perceptible than 16'
Interesting point, and I see where you are coming from. The recordings of La Madeleine, St. Sulpice, and Notre Dame feel more stately than most organs in the rest of the world. Of course I am forgetting the rest of these French Organs, but my point is made. The organs of Paris must be more refined, but for music of the rest of the world, the more blasting tone is okay I think.
You must be speaking of the reeds that Olivier Latry uses toward the end of Widor's Tocatta to show the shift into the finale of the movement, right?
I can totally understand where you are coming from, but as a horn player that loves blasting myself, I think the harsh reeds really put a color there that some people would be afraid to use, and I very much like it. Such reeds are also awesome on the first movement of Widor's 6th.
Olivier Latry is amazing, one of the three organists at Notre Dame. Some people say that the organ there is too high up, I think that just makes the architectural achievements of the 13th century that much cooler, and the main point is that the acoustics are still cool I think. The reverb is amazing on all the recordings I have. That is the best part.
Well, original old French pipe organs, tend to have reeds as the main power of richness, and not their mixtures. French mixtures once were not powerfull, so thats why french organs are famous for their reeds. German organs on the other hand (lets say Silberman for example) have mixtures as their great sourse of "power".
Youtube has crap for audio. Never judge an organ from hearing it on youtube. Ether listen to it in person or at least a high quality recording played on a high end audio system before critiquing the sound of an organ.
@macrosun Organs are also made to be heard out in the church and less so at the console. the Passau organ actually surrounds the church but essentially, the mic was to close. The sound that an organ has is made very specifically to it's space. I that helps.
Absolutely, it is not baroque piece. It sounds like typical renaissance organ work (some kind of dance). I don't know what is the exact tittle/author, it could be from XVI- early XVII century organ tablature as well.
yeah...what was i thinking this is most definently an renaissance work. i just want to find the music...its tollers sound und super organista i think that is what it is called.
Did you find the music` It is renaissance ! And it sounds like a tabulatura for lute or guitar, but at that time they were playing also on keyboard instruments. Maybe italian or spanish ? Please let me know!
everything is in the word added or missing. I have a recording of this instrument. It was once the largest CHURCH organ in the world. That word CHURCH was left out. It may well be the fifth largest.
The albert hall organ is the 38 biggest organ in the world. The second biggest in GB after the organ in Liverpool cathedral. The albert hall organ has 177 ranks and 129 register. This organ has 326 ranks and 229 register witch makes this organ, the 5th largest organ in the world. The Steinmeyer has 7977 more pipes than the Willis, Harrison & Harrison, Mander organ in Albert hall:p
Quite so. St Stephen's Passau is the largest eclesiastical (Church/Cathedral) organ in the world (if we ignore rules about consecration by bishops & the existence of the First Congregational in LA) and is certainly the largest organ outside the USA. It's a bit of a brute though and the building acoustics don't exactly help. Very good to see the video and hear the organ 'turned down a notch'. A great instrument to hear at full pelt, but it's hard to get it to actually sound 'nice'. Well done.
do you know where i could possibly find the music for this piece...because i'm starting to rip my hair out it's driving me mad. is it one of those songs that is out of print?

Hey, everybody out there!
I was wondering (as were many, as I read..^^) what piece this could be.
I think it is an Allemande or Intrada either by Pierre Phalèse or Melchior Franck. But I couldn't figure out what piece it is exactly...
Notice Mrs Frtuh's first CD, that came out few weeks ago.

The organist playing here is Mag. Brigitte Fruth, assistant organist of Passau Cathedral.

@macrosun If it helps, I believe the theme is of a renaissance dance, such as a galliard or allemand

I was not impressed with the great organ at Passau. Compared to the the great
French organs, the tonal quality seems to be lacking.
Still, the organ at Passau amazes me.

Ah ... How true. I must confess that I'm
partial to the French 'screaming reeds'
from the romantic period. The German
organs do not seem to have the full,
and rich sound as many of the French
organs.
Exception - Have you heard the recently
dedicated organ in the Frauenkirche ?
In a word - Wonderful !!

you agree ?

Hey guys, thank you for your interest of this video clip. Happy to add some more infomation about the Organ of this church:
5 manuals, 327 ranks, 17,774 pipes
233 registers, 233 stops
Steinmeyer, 1928; Eisenbarth, 1978-1981
Largest pipe organ outside the United States of America
The Passau Cathedral Organ was for many years the world's largest church organ, but it has now been superceded by First Congregational in Los Angeles.
