Anyone remember the days when you actually had to be a very strong world class player to be awarded the GM title? Now they pretty much hand it out to any 2200 putz that can fog a mirror.
I'd like to know the rules they were playing by. Back in my day, playing with Walter Browne, Julio Kaplan, Nick deFirmian, Larry Christiansen, and others in the U.C. Berkeley crowd, the rules included having to pick up pieces you knocked over, on your own time. Ditto for moving a piece not quite onto the destination square. Moving, knocking a piece over, punching the clock, and straightening the piece on your opponent's time was considered cheating.
I just analyzed this game on Fritz and it shows that Nakamura's 16th move (the one where everyone oohing and ahhing and waiting for Svenderlunk to move) actually gives Nak a losing score and favors white's position. That is, if Sven pushed his pawn to block the bishop....
The time factor in speed/bullet chess is like having another queen if you get a clock advantage on your opponent. Assuming you're correct and white is winning after move 16, he's almost certainly going to lose on time anyway. There's simply no time for analysis. How long did it take Fritz to analyze the position, anyway?
@scarface18707 you do know nakamura was born in japan right? the only difference is that gata has an accent. if you become a citizen and embrace america and its values it doesn't matter where you were born you are an american
@J575 Yes I did know, and yes ultimately you are correct, but I just feel, as an American, that Nakamura being raised here, is the best representative for United States Chess.
me too, id probably stop the clock and lecture him on how to move the pieces. How to play chess, well thats another story. But id make him a good talk.
But the more amateur u are normally the longer u take to make moves. I think this was a set up. It has to be. Or as u say this guy was just useless and therefore not very impressive. Although still very good.
Nak is a great blitz player...but his depth of creativity will not allow him any shot at the Title. His approach to the game is pattern recognition...but his approach to his opponents lacks the respect necessary to beat any of the top ten players.I have taught chess 34 years.FIDE 4/06 2520 plus...
bullshit...when everyone oooooohed it keyed the dude in that he was in deep shit so he stopped and looked harder...its like playing against 20 people and its rude shit period!
it wasnt a "friendly" game either, if you look at the end it was for a dollar...not alot of money but worth japslappin a biatch over who gives the game away with an ooooooooooh sound at a critical point.
man are you kidding? Do you know who Nakaura is? Do you think this Svenderlunk guy thought he was going to win? It all for fun and laughs, obviously. If you play chess and go to tournaments you wouldn't think this was wrong "chess etiquette" at all.
i play chess every day for dollars and i hate people who comment on the game or make sounds that alert my opponent to danger...we have evicted habitual talkers and oooooh ahhhhhers from our table or called the game a draw and made the offender pay us a dollar each....talk at a tournament and comment on a game in progress and i guarentee you get booted from the tourney.
after that tournament he won, he will probably be 2700+ . he will soon join the kinds of Anand, Kramnik, Topalov and that kid Magnus who's climbing up the ladder pretty fast. (we might have a new youngest champ soon).
sure i know who naka is...i chat with him in channel 97 on icc where his handle is "(GM) smallville" and yes everyone in 5 min blitz has a chance to win against a (GM)....i have beaten (GM) (FM) and (IM) players who blundered.

nice schoolyard comeback wikimedian....it will serve you well next year in the 6th grade if you graduate from 5th....also it may win a few name calling matches for you on the short bus with all your special ed friends.
again you come up with another good elementary schoolyard cut down....i bet you are the best in your special ed class and are a true bronze medalist in the special olympics.
Just to clarify Wikimedian is correct...it was a friendly game. Hikaru was hanging out with our chess team most of the weekend (he goes to Dickenson, the Penn State school of Law, and I go to Penn State). This was right before the final round of the tournament in the skittles room.
I convinced him to let me play him in public and my friend video taped it. As for people saying "ooh" at the crucial position - it was my friend. Naka had just sacrificed a knight and had mating threats...i was rated under 1200 at the time. I didn't think that I was going to win and I didn't mind losing some money...I got a much larger check for placing in the tournament a couple hours later.
Nakamura isn't that fast lol... Ok, he is quick, but he makes the pieces fall down, and the other guy has to replace them on his time... Whenever it happens, he should just press on the clock and ask Nakamura to fix this...
There's no real difference in the end... "the other guy"(Svenderlunk) got checkmated. What I'm more upset about is the "external distraction" that was allowed to exist surrounding the players.
They had the world blitz championship (3 min 1 sec.) tournament in Israel last year 9/5-8, 2006. The winner was Grischuk and second place was Svidler. Anand was 4th place. Do they have world championship for Blitz (1 minute time limit) also? Is Nakamura world class chess blitz player?
Super!

Nakamura is crazy at blitz. His 5 minute rating on the ICC is first at like 2850 or something

It's funny how Naka just tossing the pieces at the guys and makes him pick them up. Check out my channel if you wanna see "Legal" bullet chess.

What you talking, naka only did it once, and thats when he captured, doesn't really matter.

they should play bullet over computer they knock pieces all of the place In decent tournaments you get penalized for it .

Of course, but this isn't a tournament. It's a friendly between a SuperGM who could beat this guy blindfold.
Wikimedian 4 years ago
Nakamura isn't a superGM. To be a superGM you have to be rated at least 2700, a rating Nakamura has never reached yet.
