Actually "Gato" means cat in Spanish, but "Goto" is a name in Japanese. Possibly a slight error on part of the guy who decided to change the name since maybe he was doing the "make the name eastern for the Western market" thing that you were thinking.

That... doesn't make sense tbh. I would think that the common words that make up daisho would well have chinese roots because well, that's where those words came from, and from my current knowledge of languages i assumed that chinese and latin writing systems had well completely different roots.

Right, the character for the word "big" is the same in Chinese as it is in Japanese and is pronounced "dai" in the main Cantonese dialect (although it sounds like "ai" in at least one regional sub-dialect, but I haven't a clue when it comes to Mandarin and its sub-dialects). As you stated Latin and Chinese have mostly nothing to do with each other, but I'd venture a guess that there are probably a few archaic word roots that crossed over due to the Silk Road, but probably not common words.
