I agree...Steve is arguably THE FINEST keyboardist/vocalist/frontman ever, although his voice is gone due to drugs, i still put him in a class by himself!
Another classic underrated and underappreciated Kansas song. It seems I have written that same thing about 20 different Kansas songs. It really is a shame Kansas was overshadowed by Yes, Genesis, ELP and all the other British Prog rock bands. The more I listen to Kansas I still am amazed they didn't have a bigger following back in the mid-late 70s. I still love Kansas as much today as I did 35 years ago. And I am happy to read all the positive things other Kansas fans have to say. Thanks.
I've lived in Hungary in the 70's and it wasn't easy to get music from the west. But we could listen it on the radio! (well some of them). So I am a fan since 1975 and I managed (somehow, you don't want to know) to collect all of their records. Yes they are deeply underrated!
Unfortunately I couldn't see them in concert and I think it's too late.
This is the second best song on Monolith and should've gotten some airplay, but I don't think it did. Monolith is the album where Kerry and Steve's song styles clearly diverged. Steve was developing his own style, still heavily keyboard-focused, but Steve's songs had more R&B influence and bounce...Kerry's were more baroque...although on Monolith, Kansas was rushed into putting out an album after 3 very hectic years of touring. I saw the Monolith concert in NYC and it was a great show.
First heard Kansas in 1975 when I was 16 years old. I am 51 now and am still absolutely amazed. I love this music, and have always been absolutely mesmerized by Steve Walsh's talent.
@bolillo239 Maybe its me, but I was surprised in 1980 (79??) when I saw him onstage in shorts..I mean: it was a CONCERT and the guy was dressed for gym class?? NO rocker or singer dressed in athletic gear then. No one.
This is one of my favorites on the "Monolith" album. I had a question? Is there a midi version of this particular song. I have lots of Kansas midi's and I am very impressived with whoever'(S) had the time and patience to sequence them. Especially all those varied time signatures.
Steve Walsh-The most incredibly talented progressive rock pianist and vocalist to ever set foot on the earth. Who can surpass him or out perform him? I challenge anyone to come up with a better progressive rock male voice while simultaneously playing the keyboards and jumping around, doing handstands on stage. Simply Amazing! There is no one that I could I ever find who was better than he in performing such great music! May your talent and music live on forever, Steve (and Kansas)!!!!!!!
Steve Walsh! What else can be said about this amazing and incredibly talented musician? If I could only live to see him sing, play keyboards and do handstands and cartwheels for another thousand years on stage! An amazing sculpture of energy! Take Care, Steve! We love and thank you, brother!
at least steve looks like a soccer player insteadof that short shortthing with the suspenders yuch wtf is he trying to do win a worst dressed award.lol
You're lookin at a 70's band- styles were different back then. Bands were about music, they didn't have style consultants to make them look good for MTV or the "red carpet." Most of the 70's bands had similar styles (hell, most of us had similar styles from the 70's! at least they weren't wearing parachute pants and neon t-shirts with their hair done up with a gallon of Rave hairspray!) Just accept it for what it is, it was a different world back then!
I will always remember this song because at 3:43 the same spot on my album skipped. It is funny that i remember it from such a long time ago. BTW i played this album until i wore it out.
People are too mean to Steve Walsh; he wrote very well for Kansas (ie Down the Road or Stay Out of Trouble). My guess is that with the success of Leftoverture people just figured that Kerry was the only one who could write.
monolith was an incredible album, it had a flavor no other kansas album before or after attained, I guess thats just part of the genius of kansas! one of my all time favorite steve walsh compositions.
Agreed, Monolith with this song, Reason to be, and The Pinnacle. This was a very underrated album compared to Point of Know Return and Leftoverture. In my opinion it is better than Leftoveture
O yeah! I was thinking of another song. I forget what it was. Masque is a good album and wouild be a fav of mine if not for "It Takes a Woman's Love to Make a Man." Hate that song.
I don't love that song, I'll admit, but since the album has my two favorite ongs of all time... I don't care :P
Hmm, I can't think of a song on this album that one could confuse with The Pinnacle... A Glimpse Of home perhaps... Maybe... Angels Have Fallen? I have no idea.
Icarus...the best Kansas song...I believe Steve Walsh said that Icarus was his favorite song. Masque also has Child of Innocence. On Monolith...On the Other Side was a great one.
That was my opinion of it as well, but I eventualy decided I prefer The Pinnacle. And Child Of Innocence is amazing as well (of course it is, it's Kansas)
Yes, he said that Icarus was his favorite song that he had done with Kansas and that In The Spirit Of Things was his favorite album. Kansas trivia WIN!
Fantastic. What an underrated band.

Ok, random appearance comparison, but doesn't Robbie's hair kind of remind you of Claudio Sanchez?

This is the quintessential "miss that girl" song. Incredible passion and energy. The most powerful voice I have ever heard!

I like this expression of being alive! I hope it is not gone in America! Such a world I do not wish to live in with Asian gloom.

Kansas: Belexes

Masque: Icarus
Leftoverture: Opus Insert
Point Of Know Return: Hopelessly Human
Monolith: A Glimpse Of Home
