I think it's probably called a "mating dance" because they seem like they are dancing, which should be obvious and the one with a loose skin area is the male if I'm not mistaken. The male of seahorses is the ONLY one to give birth. I should say that the male seahorse is the ONLY ONE on the planet, male, to give birth ...It's quite interesting...

@BloodDropRose19 Actually their not ;) There are some other species (although, yes, these are in the same family as the seahorse (syngnathidae, or pipefish i think it's called :D )) where the male gives birth, such as broad-nosed pipefish and some other I couldn't find the english name for. It really is quit interesting, though!

@MegaRatat actually you can :) But you have to be very very gentle with them. and be slow when you approach them, just let your hand sit in the water and dangle your hand near them and the seahorse will eventually come to you. That's what mine does ;)

The male has a pouch opening (that points upwards), which you can see in the video. They are actually quite easy to identify when you know where to look for the pouch. The female has a small opening just below here stomach bulge that faces downwards.

These were the only ponies I ever kept. I chose this species because they are an Australian species (I'm from Aus myself) and they are quite redily available... not to mention beautiful of course. Thanks for stopping by.

Yes, these were australian Native seahorses Hippocampus subelongatus, or tigersnout seahorses. This tank is no longer setup, Iv'e put a bigger fresh water tank in its place, but I still have my 75gal reef in the loungeroom.

I've had freshwater for 2 years now, and i've got my first saltwater tank waiting to be filled up (saving money for a protein skimmer, did you have one?) Do you prefer fresh water to salt?! :O

I never have had a protein skimmer. I don't believe they are really required. If you don't overfeed your fish, and dp weekly small water changes, you have no problem at all. I certainly wouldn't put one on a new tank either, all the stuff it takes out of the water is fantastic biological material that helps get the filter going. I would say set the tank up now, if you have problems with high nitrates, then try skimming. Good luck.

Not. Dechlorinated, conditioned tapwater is fine. Naturally the addition os salt is also required.
