  • Is that gum your snakeskin boot?Maxon,Maxoff...The Maxxer Lol

But anyway thanx for the effort I did get something out of it...

  • i think the maxon is a little brighter

  • starting at 4:21 sounds a lot like Pearl Jam's "Dissident"

  • I didn't hear a difference. Perhaps there is one, but I'm willing to bet, double lblind, people wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

  • same crap...

  • Like the shoes. Herpderp

  • Maxon all the way. Ibanez can suck it...

  • In Tube Screamer shootouts it´s all about the small sound differences, isn´t it???

  • there is no difference sorry

  • Black bottom... Heh...

  • the tube screamer of course is way better...its more creamy and smooth...but the maxon sounded harsh and got this grainy sound that personaly i dnt like at all....anyways i tried both on my vintage 76 marshall and the difference was huge...the ibanez was perfect but the maxon sounded harsh like cuting paper sheets

  • @Swifty2893. How arnt they when BOTH of August Burns Reds guitar players use them lol

  • yes, i agree with the gentlemen in the video, the ibanez sound a little bit darker and smoth, the maxon i'ts a bit tighter, bright, ..sharp really , just a little, ...but there are a diference, the ibanez sound more vintage, and that'scool by selfnature, i imagine that , maxon can be covered by a couple of other new era pedals ...so ..'i would take ibanez .......

  • you must have a lot of money!!!!

  • @buffalo4321able He's Jack Black!!! Of Course He Has Alot Of Money!!!

  • @DylanBStringer91

of course he's not jack black

but working at a guitar store (or owning one?) brings you close to all that stuff

  • From what I hear, there is only a SLIGHT difference, which is just a little bit more distortion on the Maxon.

  • This should have been a blind test. Maybe then people would give their honest opinion instead of saying one sounds better cause it's vintage.

  • Ibanez it's more smooth, warm and balanced than Maxon

Maxon it's more ''gainner'' than Ibanez.

    nice pedals, both of them!

  • dear gearmandude, CAN U PLZ DEMO THE T-REX MUDHONEY

    PLZ !!!!

  • you should all go and watch the GFS greenie classic video he did. that pedal puts these to shame. and its only 49.99 new.

  • Intro song? Sounds like Rod Stewart?

  • hey jack black, greetings from greece.

  • or you could save yourself a ton of money and buy a Washburn Soloist Distortion for around $30.00 (which is the same thing as an Atrec Soloist Distortion but the Washburn is priced lower). I've used just about every overdrive/dist pedal out there over the last 30 years and the cheapest one ended up being the best imo...more tonal control than the TS9 too.

  • your reviews are very helpful! thanks man!

  • I love this video - I have a TS9 and love it! Has to be hands down my fav pedal in my entire setup!

  • I think you could attribute the differences in sound more to the relative age of the two pedals...the Ibanez has older caps that could attribute to its "darker " tone...the Maxon was REALLY clear (or brighter if you prefer) in each setting. I have to say, the Ibanez did have more of that sweet ,plummy breakup when the drive was turned up.

GMD hit it on the head at the end, if you use HB, you might want the brighter pedal..other then that, practically the same sound..

  • At 1:13. That's the perfect tone for playing Day Tripper :)

  • I have a vintage 1983 Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer guitar pedal with JRC4558D for sale at craigslist. Message me for a link or just look for it.

  • The Maxon sounded a bit brighter? Replace the 30 years old dried out electrolytic caps in the Ibanez and repeat the comparison...

  • I couldn't tell the difference. I own both, but use the Maxon a lot more, since it's cheaper to replace if something happens to it.

  • i like more the ibanez... its more screamer... good video GD

  • hey thats jack black...lol

  • Doesn't matter much...they are the same thing. There are so many other factors to consider (guitar, pickups, what kind of amp you are using, etc.) than to worry about subtle differences. They are great pedals though and Gearmandude always does a good job. Cheers.

  • Cheers jack Black. Goin for the much cheaper Maxon now as cant justify the extra money for an Ibanez.

  • Whats the song in the beggining?

  • He shoulda done a demo with both the maxon and ibanez REISSUES. of course the 1983 ibanez is gonna kick the 2008 maxons ass

  • @Sloomer25 THINK THE SAME !!!

  • is this jack black or is that just me?

  • @ethantinmin definitely you. no one ever picks up on that :D

  • @ethantinmin

baha thats the first thing i thought too.

  • the ibanez sounds transparent, and the maxon sounds like "ceramic" and louder, this is maybe the op amps... I think the maxon is a little boring sounding... compared to the consistence of the ibanez

  • buth compare the new ts9 to the maxon dude the maxon eats the ibanez

  • you sound like jack black

  • well considering that they are both made by maxon they should sound VERY similar, if not identical. i think the obvious difference is that the newer pedal, maxon, uses modern parts which will change the tonal characteristics. it's really not much of a huge difference. also, the OD9 are truebypass. i'm not sure about the old TS9 though.

anyone that says they can hear a HUGE difference is an asshole. the sound quality of the youtube video is not even good to determine such subtle differences.

  • @thricex05 Actually, given the sound quality of youtube videos, I would tend to hink that if you hear a subtle difference, maybe in front of the amp you would hear a bigger difference. Also, using the clean sound can give you an idea if the pedal fattens, mudds, thightens or makes a signal more harsh.

  • Thank you for showing us your amp settings for these pedals! I wish more companies and people do this when demoing a pedal or an effects unit. I would love to see and hear gearmanndude play a Strat with Texas Special pickups while comparing these two pedals.

  • the maxon has more bite to it. Its crisper. The ibanez is smoother. ITs breathier. I like them both.

  • They are both maxons (technically. heh. )

  • which ones better for metal?

  • @godlikecharacta neither

  • @godlikecharacta Either. To get a good metal sound you do not use any of those shitty Boss Metal Zones/Digitech Death Metal pedal. You get one of these or a ProCo Rat, turn the ts gain down, and plug it into a proper tube amp on its own distortion channel.

  • The ibanez sounds fuller. While the maxon is cleaner. Maybe the maxon is good as a boost for a nice distortion to make nice solo tones.

  • Hey,

    Awesome demo as always.

Btw, where did you get the owl strap? Liked it alot!

  • The Ibanez sounds a little juicier.

  • the maxon sounds waaaaay better...in my opinion haha.

  • Are you jack black? Seriously, I need to know.

  • Mr. Dude,

I would just like to say YOU'RE F*CKIN AWSOME! I subscibed when you had like 100-200 videos, now you have 700?!!?!? Thank you for doing all these demos, they are very very helpful in desciding what to buy. Also you have inspired me to make pedals, and because of that I have actually made a profit on it.

  • sounds like jack black xD

  • nice

  • will the ibanez ts9 drain my tone a little? is it ok to combine with a distortion pedal to really boost the sound or will it sound clogged?

  • If you put the tone of the Maxon at about 10 o clock it sounds identical to your TS9 A/B comparison ... like you said it is a tad darker. One thing I did notice about the Ibanez in my own test is that it seemed to sustain a bit longer and keep a sweet note when bending a bit longer if that's possible duno maybe it was just in my head but I like the Maxon for note clarity in rhythms and riffs.

  • Hey i am planing getting some pedals to my pedal board, i play almost everything in the rock genre. I play Les Paul. if some of these pedals are good or bad, then answer me please.

Tubescreamer or Vox Satchurator Vox Timemachine delay or MXR Carbon copy delay Boss FRV-1 fender reverb Boss CE-5 chorus or MXR black label chorus Maybe replace the crybaby standard wah with the new Cantreel wah.

  • @Runelaier All i waould say is find your own sound. who gives a shit about anyone else as long as your happy.

  • Comment removed

  • all the way noon hahaha

  • nothing beats the ibanez for some strange reason....good clipping so I hear

  • To my ears the Ibanez is the clear winner. I'm gonna have to get one now.

  • whats the intro song?

  • You sound like Jack Black Lol (:

  • Ibanez sounds better. Less "skippy" in the vibrations.

  • OMG ... Use some different eq and gain settigns and they sound the same

  • cheers for the demo man, helped me out big willy style...p.s are you Jack Black??

  • la maxon n'est pas une tube screamer, c'est un overdrive contrairement a l'ibanez, on ne peut dailleurs pas trop les comparer, mais sinon, pour moi, la ts9 est bien meilleure musicalement

  • maxon od9 sounds better.. cleaner.. but still, both are good.. love the "vintageness" of the ibanez..

  • Hi!my Ibanez ts9 (japan) with silverl botton!!!what is the different?thanks

  • Hi!my Ibanez ts9 (japan) with silverl botton!!!what is the different?thanks

  • does the distortion is good at ibanez pedal i wana buy one too whats your opinion for a hard rock - heavy metal sound ? pls answer

  • @jimmis100gr for heavy metal you shoudl get a distortion pedal not an od. You should try the Boss Metal Zone or Metalcore.

  • @1ndguitar i want a bullet for my valentine sound , do you know them? i have heard that they use that pedal u think that i can succeed their sound with that pedal? if u dont know them listen any song of them and tell me only if u want :)

  • Well I'm not gonna pretend to be an expert on guitar crap because I'm not even close. I looked a few places and found they use the MXR Zak Wylde Overdrive pedal too. They probably combine the 2 and/or use the pedals to just boost the distortion from their amps.

  • @jimmis100gr The ibanez is a more natural distort sound that is great, versatile and liquid feeling. If your wanting metal sounds or hard rock, they're both very different, with humbuckers and a tube screamer (that thing used there) you could get hard rock, for metal you'll need a heavy distortion pedal, fuzz can work too.

  • Bro...get a decent mic. Please. I really like your vids, but the audio sucks....

  • the debate whether this man is Jack Black is as dubious and shady as is the obsession with vintage stuff. sorry people, you are just complete idiots.

  • those pedals sound EXACTLY the same. everyone claiming sth else is a petty wacko.

  • the vintage obsession is absolutely pointless, redundant and ridiculous.

  • Does it make me a bad gearhead that I'd rather have the Maxon largely b/c it's true bypass and has a brighter LED?? 0:) They might sound the same, they might sound different, but weighing those features against things like price tag and constant worrying about the vintage one, and I gotta' go Maxon on this one~shrug~

(And yes, I know the potential drawbacks of true bypass, so don't bother bringing it up lol)

  • its deffinetly not Jack Black... Gearmanndudes band is called El Roostars look them up, they have some vids on YT and you can see the white coil cord and ZMan amp in the back on a couple vids...this is not JB..

it would be cool if it was tho :)

  • SRV used an ibanez tube screamer, so thats gotta say something.........

  • THIS IS JACK BLACK!!!

  • Definitely !!! I think he just doesn't want people writing or asking stuff offtopic and that's why he didn't use his real name. So the guy is either Jack Black or his tech twin. Anyway I find the reviews very useful.

  • Wow. I am surprised that you did not think there was a bigger difference. The sound is marginally different in a simple listen, but when just feeling the warmth and vibe come out, the original is $400 more musical. That is, if $400 isn't a huge setback for you. But if someone buys expensive guitars and amps, I think the difference is worth it.

  • 6:17 after watching the whole video, right at the end i thought Jack Black was talking haha!

  • What the name of this song???

    thank's

  • Pool Hall Richard by the Faces, it's not on any of their albums you'll need to find a compilation

  • Yupp..Maxon OD9 sounded more brighter and the vintage TS9 sounds warmer.

  • jack black

  • What this song's in the intro???

    Thanks for th shootout man!

  • sorry, but Ibanez is much better. It is smoother and more musical. I really feel huge difference

  • @ElectricSkyProject What you're hearing is not 1983 new. You're hearing 28 years of dried out electrolytic capacitors that have left the "original" pedal crippled.

  • I believe I liked the Ibanez sound best :) but their both good anyway. Even though I like the TS-9, I use a vintage Ibanez SD-9 which a pal very kindly sold to me for a very nice price

  • Nice shoes!

  • what's it gonna be Kyle - Tits or Destiny? Nice Demo. I'm confused with so many Tubescreamer reissues and clones out there.

  • it sounds the same. end of.

  • thx gmd, great demo!!

  • hahahahahaha jack black +1

  • this is jack black

  • rofl, yeah it is...

  • Correct, if you're talking about the TS9. If you're talking about the TS808 then Maxon still make them for Ibanez. But to be honest I don't really care as they all sound pretty much the same as each other. They were just bog standard overdrive pedals in the 70s and 80s. If SRV hadn't have used one we probably wouldn't be having this discussion.

  • They are not the same. Check the specs dude. First of all Maxon is a true bypass with the real jrc chip. Cant you hear the difference in this as does GMD.

  • Actually 'the real JRC chip' is no longer in production. They now use one that's as close as they can get - but it's not in the TS9 or OD9 - it's in the TS808 and OD808 And they are the same, I've had both. Specifications are exactly the same.

  • you need to do your research dude

Ibanez Tube Screamers were built by Maxon from 1974 until 2002.

  • maxon has the correct jrc chip and true bypass...

    wins.

  • Maxon Hands down.

  • What I want to know is how a Maxon compares to a newer TS-9.

  • The maxon beats a new ibanez hands down. The maxon has no bass loss and a less distinguished mid-range boost.

  • It still provides a nice, less harsh mid boost right?

  • yes.

  • ibanez sounds better, but has more feedback, you can hear it.

  • the ibanez pedal blows the maxon away in my opinion

  • I don't care what most say about the circuitry, but just the components can make a hell of a difference... I think the TS sounds a lot fuller and has more feeling compared to the Maxon. I'm not a fan of either or have either of them, but it's just what I hear and not what my wallet is telling me :(

  • hey everybody, whats the reason to have a overdrive pedal honestly. like why dont you just use your amps distortion? thnks

  • if you wanna play blues, your gonna wanna sound different than someone playing metal. Different distortion/overdrive sounds different. Also most guitar players care a lot about how their guitar sounds.

  • Totally agree with LGP123, you may also only want overdrive for specific parts of a song, or have different pedals for lead or rythm etc.

  • Different sounds so whole set isn't the same!

Add extra tone to amp when needed.

  • earlier the amps must get all the way on the volume know so they can overdrive adn the pedals were inventede to get overdirve on decent volume levels... and poeple like the idea of pedals...but,, you are right most of the best tube amps has WAY better overdrive tahtn pedals... at least IMO... a Tube Driver is a great pedal but can be compared to MArshall Plexi...

  • mostly to boost the amp

  • it's a different kind of distortion that you can mix with the amps disto. If you have a clean tube amp this is especially interesting. It adds more dynamics.

i use my overdrive pedal just a little, to give the amp a little more bite without having to raise the volume.

  • i use my amps distortion, but it being an older tube amp it just doesnt quite get where i want it, so i will use the overdrive to "scream" the tubes. you know, just push it a little farther. But i definately agree it is kinda a waste if you just use it on a clean channel.

  • i think i like the maxon better. im lookin for a good od to put in front of my dual rectifier. any suggestions?

  • You sound a lot like jack black.

Not really, but the guy saying he wants to tie people up sounds like a cutie

  • +1 for the Jack black comment. Sounds like him

  • wow your the first person to say he sounds like jack black.

  • and something else, kinda funny, the OD808 is based on a TS9, the OD9 is based on a TS808. So put up your vintage TS9 against your OD808 and see what happens ;)

  • The only difference i heard was that the TS9 sucked tone, and on the first try, had a bit more gain. But thats probably because the pots are different :/ . IMO maxon wins with truebypass! :D btw if anyone says this guy sounds like jack black one more time i will them down. >:(

  • Mesas, Fenders, Marshalls - damn near everything sounds BETTER with a Tube Screamer pushing it.

  • Maxon OD-9 = Ibanez TS-9

Maxon licensed the OD9 to Ibanez, they just call it a tube screamer designed by Maxon.

  • Maxon produced the original Tube Screamer

  • Yes Maxon did not only create the Original Tube Screamer but they licensed their product to Ibanez back in the day until they stopped licensing it out and starting making it themselves.

  • The tuber I used to have had a flat top and not the steped shape as well as I can recall. Set me straight on this. It sat for so long that the caps got stale as far as I can remember.

  • Wait...an 808? if you have a vintage 808, ill give you $50 for it.

  • thanks!! winner is TS9 for me !!!!

    the best screamer!!!!

  • Why gay?

  • Jack Black? This is rock school i suppose

  • the TS9 sounds a bit thin, while the Maxon sounds nice and bright, and thick and creamy. more Vintage also. Maxon wins!

  • Woah, you sound like Jack Black.

  • if you dislike the ts-9 so much why are you watching all these ts-9 videos and saying the exact same thing on all of them? why not spend your time commenting on pedals you do like?

  • haha, brave but foolish. who says i even watched the video? anyhow, i was just stating my opinion, sorry that bothered you.

  • Brave but foolish?? I'm sorry are we playing world of warcraft or something?

  • ummmm.... sure? i'll go along with ur childish antics =)

  • your still disgusting tho. ):

  • that's what ur mom said to me afterwards ;)

  • actually that was me disguised as my mom.

  • ...... :'(

  • your retarded...seriously

  • :( bro, u shouldn't use the word "retarded" so loosely (with ur parent's history of mental illnesses)

  • not bad sir

  • you're*

  • thanks, as if i didnt already know this. do you have anymore obvious statements to make? its called commenting, not essay writing.

  • I think this is Jack Black. you never see anything but his hand and foot and he doesn't give his name on his profile. just admit that you are Jack.

  • it is, you can tell by his voice

  • Thanks man. cool video.

  • Maxon invented the tube screamer. They just licensed it to Ibanez, until they recently started reissuing the original. So i dont know where that puts the TS9 now. There is a slight difference in the fuzziness of the overdrive. And if your playing with another drive or a driven amp, it may or may not make all the difference. It depends...

  • You are talking about potential differences in tolerances of over 25%. That is what a guy like Eric Johnson means when he says that on some pedals, the tone knob does not seem to be part of the fudemental tone and why he use to go through quite a few of them to find one that worked. More important then the different chip version...

  • You must consider in any such A/B comparison using the ''same settings'' the significant differences in tolerance between parts. 2 identical pots may have very different sweep so that one should be set at 3 o'clock to match another set at 12... In other words, same knob position does not mean same setting. You must find where they sound the same if at all.

  • MAXON BABY

  • im curious of what you think of the maxon real tube pedals and as for price between the ibanez and the maxon i looked it up there just about the same price :/ and i refuse to shop at guitar center any more since they got bought out.. people would go to guitar center to get a deal, now there owned by the same people that own toys'r'us so now i have to do all my shopping online to find a deal. most musicians are not rich even if they are they still want a deal, but let me know what you think.

  • holy shit it's jack black

  • Both the original TS9s and the Maxon OD9s are made by maxon. All other original ibanez 9 series pedals were made by maxon for that matter. Only the newer reissue tubescreamers are made by ibanez... point is that these two pedals are essentially the same. only slightly different variations. I think the new maxons are better- true bypass and all that good stuff

  • Who's the best ? Jack Black or the dude who wears a winter hat in the studio and play metal with a gretsh or a rickenbacker?

  • sound da same jack black

  • COMPUTERMAN!!!!!!!!!!!

  • the vintage TS9 has that nice harmonic thing happening, it also has cleaer more defined notes. The maxon is very very different, a bit muddier, more fuzzy, less contoured.
