  • How...um, morbid?

  • I can't watch this video anymore, just having it on mute I can still imagine hearing the BEEP... BEEP... BEEP... BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP... I think I had trouble sleeping the night I first watched this... :(

  • @LogoFan121092 I remember the first time I saw this...it was upsetting for me, and I also had a cat that resembles Mimsie. He's five and a half years old right now, but still... :'(

I also had the sound on mute while having different music playing so it wouldn't be sad, but it still hurts me to see this :'(

  • guyism brought me here

  • DIE GUYS! you are doing bad comments! i will do a nice comment but mimese Is in heaven now.

  • @tysonbfrance So... I'm an asshole for saying that it is not the real MTM cat? You are officially the part of society that really needs to grow up. Also, not everyone here is stupid. Some people are really smart.

  • everyone here is pretty fucking stupid

  • ...That was disturbing.

  • i cant find a clip of the last minutes of the show where it shows the autistic kid playing with the snowglobe. can someone give link

  • Look, that is not Mimsie's body. It is a different cat's body. She was still alive when this was filmed. But died later that year. Also, here is a question, is that a real cat that is dead or a picture of a cat that was laying down?

  • @MegaMoneyMan99 omg you've really pulled back the curtain you stupid asshole

  • Hope you enjoyed our depressing ending to our much loved series! Here's your favourite character. Watch him die.

  • fox would kill universal

  • Epic FAIL!

  • @mr20thcenturysam Epic win!

  • Stop THAAT MTM Cat didnt Die!

  • 20th century Fox Poor MTM Cat

  • The MTM cat was dying because as the series St. Eleswhere was ending, so

was MTM productions which started in 1970 with Mary Tyler Moore Show.

  • Who green lighted this idea?

  • Dark

  • WHY. WHY WOULD THEY DO THAT. Goddammit NBC!

  • WHAT. THE. FUCK.

  • WTF guys?

  • No,not Mimsie!!! TT-TT

  • What the hell, MTM you big jerks! Why'd you have to kill poor little Mimsie?! What did that cat ever do to you?!

  • That's just terrible. Why in the world would they do that? I just don't know what to say to that. I'm actually on the verge of tearing up right now.

  • And they obviously used a different cat for this logo. I saw a picture of Mimsie as an adult cat and she looks nothing like this one. She has stripes and is mostly orange. This one has no stripes, just solid patches. I hate to nitpick but I'm getting tired of people who believe the false rumors that they used Mimsie's dead body for this logo.

I also wonder if this logo had to be approved to air. I highly doubt Mary would have let this one pass. That could explain why it was never show again.

  • St. Elsewhere was notorious for its dark, morbid sense of humor (Huffnagel on a half shell anyone?) As shocking and depressing this logo is it's actually very in character for the twisted setting of the series. Of course it didn't help that the audience was just hit with a major mind screw ending a few minutes prior.

  • I have always attributed this to coked-out Hollywood types who have no clue.

  • I saw the last 10 or less min of this as rerun when I was somewhere under 6 (born 1984). I thought "Cool! Snow globe!" I was thinking how it was great show because the scene was all magical and that I'd like to watch it (only time I've watched St.Else). Then I see the cat and I'm like "Ohh it's the Kitty again!" THEN IT FUCKING DIES! I remember that well and IT FN SCARED and SCARRED ME FOR LIFE FOR LIFE! I never want to see that

fucking cat again. It took years to say death is OK after.

  • @IndygoEEI

Plus after reading about the show on the WIkipedia I never want to see it ever. God help us if House

    on Fox pulls this crap.

  • I'm confused, Did they actually kill Mimsie, is this when he retired, or, what...This was the least confusing thing about the series' end, in my opinion....

  • MIIMMMSSSIIIEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!NNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @alexzivo wtf are you talking about?

  • Comment removed

  • Realize the consequences everyone! The fact the Tommy imagined all the events in this series means that all the shows indirectly connected to this show are part of the dream as well! Google "Tommy Westphall Universe"

  • @ayashiiguy

    Not just all the shows.

If we expand the universe to multimedia, then books, movies, comics, and games are related too.

It'll reach the point that everything would be related.

  • LMAO omg thats so fucked up. and kinda eery.

  • @Cali978 I agree. It is very eery.

  • okay all I have to say is

THIS HAS SCARED ME MORE THEN ANY OTHER VANITY PLATE I HAVE SEEN YET.

    i'm so sorry mimsie

THE SHOW'S ENDING IS NOT CANON TO ME

  • one of the saddest logos ive ever seen

  • wait wait wait, Eric Roberts had an electrifying portrayal???

  • @fanhawk2010 I agree with you on that one.

  • I'm very sorry....We lost her.... :(

  • that's what I call NARM!

  • I can't believe they did that as a final farewell. Luckily I never saw this as a child. This is freaky and my fiance thought it was sickening to do this. They should have just used a halo and angel wings for that poor cat :(

  • @FanHawk2010 And apparently after this one airing, this logo was never seen again in repeats of that episode.

  • Depressing . . .

  • Thanks Cracked for destroying my childhood

  • They repeated the final series for the first time since 1989 when it first aired on Channel Four here in the UK last year (2010) and this title sequence was not shown...My mum said they did show it the first time. As someone mentioned this would upset young children, well with all due respect, this is not a show suitable for children to watch, as i was far too young when it was broadcast the first time to watch it back in 1989.

  • oh god they killed MIMSIE

  • @RockinMan09 I believe Mimsie was a girl

  • This would make a young child bawl there little eyes out seeing the kitty on its side and on life support :( and then flat lining ... way to go NBC for making animal lovers cry with this end logo :( RIP Mimsie

  • @Fieldsfangirl28 Hopefully Betty White wasn't watching this one...

  • I wish I could see these credits without the voiceover, but I think that's impossible, as Im pretty sure all re-reuns of this final episode now plaster this with the normal credits sequence and logo. I think it would be even more chilling and eerie without the voiceover. This is quite morbid, and I'm amazed it was ever passed to be shown, but it's good that they did a special credits sequence for the final episode. Its a shame it'll never be seen again.

I love cats and Mimsie! <3

  • I remember watching the finale, thinking "well, that sucks, at least we'll get cute, innocent little Mimsie!"

I was wrong. So horribly wrong.

  • Don't worry about Mimsie, people. I'm sure she's fine. Cats have nine lives, remember?

  • @zvermilyer3 - Actually she did pass on in 1988. She lived for 20 years. That's a long lifespan for a cat. I guess this was their way of telling everyone that she died.

  • @FanHawk2010

Actually, I happen to know that she died AFTER this was made. This was just the product of someone's twisted sense of humor.

  • @zvermilyer3 no one cares

  • @zvermilyer3 it's actually the product of the series finale of st. elsewhere. they would usually dress mimsie up in a surgical mask, but for the series finale, just for a lark, they posted mimsie lying down in the gurney, hooked up on a heart monitor, which you see here. it was a little twisted, yes, but they felt it was a little fitting to the end of a series. the death of the actual mimsie in the same year was purely coincidental.

  • @serpentisma I can see what they were going with here anyway since it was the show's finale anyway, the idea of the cat in the logo flatlining at the very end probably seemed like a great way to end the series despite what the public may think in the end.

  • SCREW YOU AND THE DEATH OF MIMSIE! * snif*

  • @cmulwee001 yeah maybe they could have done that to cause the cat on the heart monitor then flatlining was depressing. I'm not sure if there's another version without the VoiceOver but the wings and halo would have been more peaceful and cuter.

  • I wish they would have done it in a more peaceful way like gave mimsie a halo and angel wings and ascend to heaven.

  • @blackbelt61686

Or maybe, simply, Mimsie, meowing as usual, but instead of the surgical scrubs, she would have wings and a halo. Is that what you mean?

Of course, unless I'm wrong, the real Mimsie didn't die until later that year.

BTW does anyone have a version without the voiceover?

  • You BASTARDS!!

  • Bastards.

  • WHAT THE FUCK WHERE THEY THINKING?

  • THIS IS BLODDY HORRIBLE

  • It happens...

I would have had Mimsie shown as playful...even though it was the final St. Elsewhere episode. Best way to go about that...show Mimsie alive

  • THERE WAS NO FUCKING NEED TO SHOW THIS CAT DIE!!

Man what the FUCK where they thinking?

  • all the cats must miss mimsie

  • stupid st. elsewhere why mimsie? tears :(

  • YOU BASTARDS

  • What a way to end a show that turned to be all just a dream!

  • @wileyk209zback Yeah, it was like "surprise" and then this (since I guess it compliments everything in one wrapped package).

  • R.I.P. Mimsie '1968-1988'

  • When I first saw this it was on YouTube at night and it freaked me out so bad I cried and couldn't sleep and didn't go back on YouTube again for several months T.T

  • Were it not for the voiceover advertising the next show, this would've been thrice as creepy.

  • The cat was 20 years old when she died which is long for a cat. Just happened to be that mimsie passed after the show ended. Still a creepy thing.

  • @7e72004

You're right. The real Mimsie didn't die until later in the year. The producers of St, Elsewhere had NO way of knowing that she was dying for real. This credit sequence was just meant to spell the end the of the series.

It was common for MTM to do different things with the cat for the final episodes of shows they made.

For example, in "The Last Newhart" the cat yell "QUIET!!", the only word spoken by the two Darryll's during the episode, in the entire series.

  • @cmulwee001 Certainly we read too much into these things that weren't meant to be more than a little fun at the time. The fact though they did prolong the use of the logo for the end credits of this show does amuse me a little the way they went about it.

  • Well that was creepy as hell

  • Comment removed

  • You've got to be kidding Me, that was kind of dark humor right there.

  • Fuck... Every time I see anything to do with St. Elsewhere, I get cold chills... The name, the infamous "it was all one kid's dream!" ending and now this... I swear, St. Elsewhere has got to be the single creepiest television programme I've never watched...

  • FUCK YOUUUUUUU t(-_-(t) mimsie lives on in our hearts!

  • Now what was the bloody point of this?

  • that was sad

  • At first I was kinda put off by this but in a way it's kind of touching...St. Elsewhere and Mimsie saying their final farewell...

  • FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK we luv u mimsie

  • So...they basically did everything humanly possible to mess up the series finale to this show? My mom said the revelation at the end still makes her mad to this day.

  • I watch this and all I can think about is MR. FEENEY!

  • How did they get Mimsie to lie still like that?

  • @CelesteK A rumor is that they actually used Mimsie's dead body.

  • @EastmanFilm Disgusting! :P

  • @EastmanFilm - where did you hear that?

  • @FanHawk2010 Some old rumor website. Judging by pictures from Mimsie's lifetime, it is very possible.

  • @CelesteK I'm sure it's just a photograph still they used for this logo of a cat lying down.

  • :( Couldn't they have used a nicer way to announce Mimsie's death? Such as saying RIP Mimsie 1968-1988?

    This was awful :(

  • @canadiananny86 Yeah, saying "To Mimsie" or something would've been nice.

  • @RetroToledo As at least 2 other users said though, Mimsie was actually still alive at the time this episode aired, but passed away later that year at age 20.

  • @canadiananny86 actually, mimsy died after this episode, ironically.

  • @indianabrick I understand :) I never saw it on tv because I was only 2 at the time. Still kinda sad though.

  • U know its sad i love cats and i had a orange and white cat he was real sweet but he got hit bya car i never saw it happen but i swear this is PATHETIC!! rip Mimsie!!

  • FUCK YOU NBC. WHY'D YOU HAVE TO KILL MIMSIE.

  • @mudkipNDS IT Was on NBC??? Crap.

  • @mudkipNDS awe and i wouldnt say they killed Mimsie i think the cat was old and died naturally and what time was this show even on so sad that kitty flatlined :(

  • @Fieldsfangirl28 This show aired at 10PM so most kids should've been in bed at that point.

  • @RetroToledo thanks for that input and i thought this show aired at like 9 pm my bad :p

  • @Fieldsfangirl28 It probably aired at 9 in the Central time zone.

  • I know the cat died when this show ended. But was this the best idea for a tribute?

  • This episode will be on ALN July 19th, tune in to see if they returned this credit sequence or if it's still the generic version (and let me know; I don't have ALN)

  • @JMFabianoRPL Remember it's THIS Monday!

  • This is just awesome, isn't it? God, how I miss this show...

  • Apparently quite a few people were bothered by this. From what I have read it was shown that one time on the last episode and afterward it was never shown again. It would just cut to the regular St Elsewhere credits in future airings. It didn't make it onto the DVD I don't think.

  • @jhwink Shoot, we still are waiting on SEASON TWO! The MTM Show is about to complete its DVD run, so who knows?

  • I only recently became aware of this, as I never watched the show. Of course, I've seen the MTM logo at the end of many shows over the years, and they did continue using the original Mimsie animation/meow through the mid-90s... but this? The scariest "scary logos" have nothing on this for nightmare fuel.

  • …Well, if that don't beat all.

This is…creepy beyond belief. Soul-scarring, one might say. I really must wonder how there weren't mass suicides when this finale aired, what with the revelation that the whole show was a LIEE followed by the death of an innocent feline.

R.I.P. Mimsie (both the real one and the one in this logo). May you find that the road to heaven is paved with mice, fish, and other assorted foods cats like.

  • @TackyRackyComixNEO There's a cat named Brak up there, too.

  • @droidekabakugan1986 My sympathies :-(

  • @TackyRackyComixNEO Don't forget cheezburger

  • Comment removed

  • I don't know what's more twisted...the way the show ended or the MTM cat buying the farm in the end.

  • St. Elsewhere was a solid medical drama that incorporated a great deal of morbid humor and satire. It was a fitting end to a show about a thoroughly screwed up hospital where the doctors were sicker than the patients. Shows like ER, The West Wing, Law and Order and House owe a lot to this show.

  • Poor kitty!!

  • WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT?!?!

  • f*** you mary tyler moore that's why u have diabetes

  • @TheSHEERHEARTATTACK Wow. Just wow. And BTW, if anything, Mary, given her support for animal's right, and if she had any say as to MTM's programs and what they do, might have been the one who stopped the usage of this credit sequence in syndication.

  • W...T...F?

  • jesus h. christ.

  • What makes it worse is that the announcer talks right out over it, like he's trying to IGNORE THE DYING KITTY-KAT. My kitty sits on my bed as we speak, and I shall now give him cuddlings.

  • Good God.

  • I've read that Mimsie was 20 years old when she died, so you can rest assured that he lived a long and healthy life before passing. Still, this just has a scary, lasting impression on me. It scares me even more that my own cat resembles Mimsie.

  • @GlockenWhale This saddened me when I first saw this...considering I also have a cat that looks like Mimsie.

  • PLEASE CAN SOMEBODY TELL ME WHAT TO PUT IN TO SEE THE LAST EPISODE WHERE TOMMY HAS THE SNOW GLOBE??????? thanx its driving me nuts.

  • It's symbology people

    .

Jeez. They are not killing a cat. The cat is representative of the show, which had died and was no more. It's not really any different than Babylon 5 which ended with its main character dead, or Blakes 7 which killed the whole crew. Shows must end and the cat logo was symbolizing St Elsewhere's passing.

  • P.S. It appears Mimsie the Cat routinely did lots of oddball things on TV shows. She dressed like a cop in one show, and in Newhart she said "Goodbye" in the final episode

    .

Since the cat had just died, it seemed reasonable to acknowledge that on the show. The real cat died - therefore her animation died too

    .

  • @harleykman On "The White Shadow", she was bouncing a basketball, and in "Remington Steele", she had on a Sherlock Holmes hat and a pipe...which dropped when she mewed.

But on the last episode of "Newhart", I thought she mouthed Darryl and Darryl's only line in the entire series: "QUIET!!!"...

  • @vinylrecord68 On "Bay City Blues", she caught a fly ball.

  • @vinylrecord68 actually on the white shadow. they used a different cat

  • @vinylrecord68

But on The White Shadow, the cat wasn't Mimsie at all, but a different cat altogether, with black and white spots.

And it looked like a grown cat, unlike Mims who was depicted as a baby kitten.

  • @harleykman Exactly. That was my take when I first saw the logo (and I did watch the show during its original run). I thought it was creative on MTM's part (meaning the company, not Mary Tyler Moore)...and it didn't bother me a bit.

  • Can someone upload the last scene?

  • OK, that's just messed up.

  • @jrcarter9175 - I agree :P

  • What year does it say on the copyright?

  • @jinglebell61 MCMLXXXVIII which stands for 1988.

  • @jinglebell61 1988, the year Mimsie died.

  • @jinglebell61 1988.

  • I wonder if AmericanLife got to the last episode, and if so, which credits did they use? This, the standard ones with MTM (or with, shudder, 20th Television)? Also, did they just tack on a random end credit sequence or did they totally redo the one for this episode?

  • Also remember since St. Elsewhere and its ending never existed, you can say this logo never existed so the character Mimsie still lived through it!

  • @JMFabianoRPL Especially since the logo was used for years afterwards

  • Sorry about this to whoever called it "spam." It's just that I don't like it when people suggest that they used the real Mimsie after she passed to make this logo. It was just black humor that not everyone is comfortable with. (As for it being "too soon," I am guessing not many people knew why that was so at the time) I do understand where people are coming from, though....as this version of the ending is surreal and dark indeed. Plus I don't like when bad things happen to cats...

  • I've never watched any episode of St. Elsewhere, and this just made me teary eyed.

Screw you St. Elsewhere, you tugged on my heart real hard just now.

    I almost wish I hadn't seen this.

I don't wanna see a dying, let alone a flatined, cat.

The volume of the flatline is disturbingly loud.

I also know the whole show is in the mind of an autistic child.

    What's up with that?

    That's neat, but really weird.

Oh yeah, why was that cat dying?

  • @Sterlng And for the record, those people are sick. What the hell were they thinking? Did whoever make this really think that this is entertaining? Did they just wanna screw up everyones day? I'm not gonna watch St. Elsewhere now.

  • @Sterlng If you invent a time machine, maybe you can go back to 1988 and complain, but as it is, that was 22 years ago and we can't do anything about it now. I guess you can take solace in the fact that this closing has not been seen outside of NBC (unfortunately, at one time they took away ANY MTM logos in doing so).

  • Mimsie's fuckin' dead.

  • Aww, poor little kitty.

  • Mimsie, I'll miss you.

  • thats sad oh Mimsy!!( RIP Kitty

  • Actually yes, Mimsie died the same year that this series had ended, after doing some research. I'm not sure if she had died after or before the episode did, but it might have been a hint from the people behind the tweaking of the logo, that she had died before the final of episode of "St. Elsewhere", and wanted people to know that she had recently passed away. A bit bizarre to be honest in her memory if you think about it. Really tragic. She lived a great full life anyways, said by Mary Tyler.

  • @Sneep29 Interesting, If you have time I'd appreciate it if you could send me the links to your findings.

  • @Sneep29 Can you point us to the interview where she said this?

  • @JMFabianoRPL

It wasn't interview, I actually think that it's a book she published, like an autobiography about herself. It's in the link, but you have to read it to find where it is.

  • People watching this in 1988:

"Wait, why are all the things around the MTM cat? ...Noooooooo!"

  • WTF!!!! Did they think it was cute & clever?? NASTY!!!!

  • Well anyways, man! This is a bigger downer than a German bedtime story! O_O

*cutaway gag scene shows a German bedtime story narrated by a German accented narrator*

There vwnce (once) vas a boy who like to suck his zumbs(thumbs).

His motzer(mother) asked him to stop, but he vouldn't(wouldn't).

So she cut off his zumbs(thumbs).

Now he has no zumbs.(thumbs) Good night.

  • LOL

  • I swear to god! St. Elsewhere IS a crappy hospital! Look it up on Wikipedia! Doesn't that piss you off?! :P

  • @WolfyPsycho it pisses me off that MIMSIE IS DEAD

  • That's just fucked up. Reminds me of that movie with Hugh Grant in it about this hospital where patients dies and their bodies gone missing(I don't know what the movie was called. ^_^;;;) but yeah talk about dumbass malpractice! They don't understand the boy has autism and then Mimsey dies? Stupid doctors! :P

  • NBC killed Mimsey!!!!! WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!

  • The 70's were fucked up big time. D:

  • Dude... That's just fucked up. poor Mimsie! :'(
