@MrDarwinsDog Blowing bubbles is certainly a feeding behavior in baleen whales and I've seen them do it in many different ways. However, this whale and these rings were strictly a social behavior, Thorn was probably playing with the rings, as he spyhopped right in the middle of the last one before he left the boat.
@danthewhaleman I agree with you but I would go a step further and say these are smart creatures. They know when people are around and show off infront of us.
Whales socialize with each other and like to make contact with humans. Whales also teach their young how to survive and anything they know, including blowing air bubble rings. If this humpback is female, it could teach it's child how to blow bubble rings. Isn't that amazing, dolphins are known to behave in this manner in the wild, they even play with the bubble rings.
holy crap id be screaming my head off thinking that the boats going to be tipped over by the HUMONGOUS whale!! but ya its cool and ive always wondered if whales ever tip over boats (so i think that weird comment at the beginning is just me being weird :P )
@Zeuszgrl Most whales, humpback mainly, are the ones being endangered because they live off the pacific ocean, when they stray towards the japanese area that is.
I don't know if she's seen this or not, but I just emailed her at her MySpace page with a link to it. It's just MySpace(dot)com/haydenpanettiere if you want to email her yourself.
I'll let the smart people figure out the amazing science their looking at in that ring!
Hint it's what will take us to the stars!!

Oh... my...lordy...! I think it may be a feeding behavior in baleen whales. So, they've done it for ... a million years?

That's so brutal! Think if you were the first person to see this over the side of a boat, and you had no idea what it was!

I would probably freak out. I never would suspect it was made by an animal.
