The square probably looked more like a triangle, but the point is that the guardsmen kept sufficient nerve to fall back as a group around their flag, including according to the author you were using as a source.

Hollins' figures don't add up. The Consular Guard counted 800 grenadiers and about 100 light infantry (the nucleus of the future 1st Regiment of foot chasseurs of the Guard).
And yes, apparently they were jumped by Frimont, but they managed to keep sufficient nerve to form a square and retreat around their flag. Only an elite unit could have managed that, and it's all the more to the Guard's credit.
So as Hollins confirms what I just said, the propaganda was true.

Where is it possible to find Petit's account? And what is the Osprey based on if there are no accounts?
Propaganda claims on both sides doubtless exaggerated events, but there is no reason to think the Austrians were more trustworthy.
I said a triangle because the "clump" would have looked like one, based on similar improvised formations during battles of the period.
