That's because the vocals aren't stressed as being all that important. If you have something to say, say it and let talent be damned.

Which is why Indie music isn't all that accessible in the mainstream, simply because it isn't superficial enough.

Because it's very rare you get a human being who has the benefits of both a cavernous mind and a powerful voice.

The latter tends to use their voice to make beautiful-sounding mainstream music with superficial appeal while the former uses their mind to make beautifully-composed music with deeper, but less popular appeal.
