Heads up Disco 3 owners - even though you can drove off the parkbrake and it will auto release, don't. - and if the parkbrake MUST be adjusted every service, it seems that these two tips should see you clear of any dramas!?
This is stupid but for old times sake here goes: I'm sorry. PLEASE DON'T READ THIS you will die in seven days if you don't post this comment on 10 videos in the next hour. if you do, tomorrow will be the best day of your life
In my father in law's 2007 Discovery 3, I have encountered a very similar problem. The parking brake was not released automatically when driving with D position. The official dealership pinpointed EPB module was malfunctioned, therefore actuator, cable assembly, both parking brake shoes, and rotors had to be replaced. I did not find any parking brake red light on the dashboard but the parking brake was locked. Very common problem in Discovery 3. Contact a dealership for a repair.
The common mistake with this Park Brake is that you can just drive off all the time without manually releasing it. The auto release is not for use all the time it is only for occassional use, like if you forget to manually release it.
There are plastic gears inside the actuator and when the brake shoes are worn or out of adjustment the gears come to the end of their travel and slip, this causes the high pitched scream.
Thanks - so the rumour of a clutch in there is wrong (I thought so as window actuators etc don't use clutches). I'd like a Disco 3 but it sounds like it could be a nightmare once out of warranty.
I dont think there's a clutch in there, long time since i've seen the inside of one so i can't remember. Reliability wise they're not too bad but yes they will be expensive to fix once the warranty is out, mainly due to labour costs as parts are not that expensive when compared to a range rover.
I do a lot of my own repair work - Dad was in the business and I had old Jags so I got plenty of practice 8-) but don't lots of jobs on the D3 need an LR interface to clear error codes, do calibrations etc so are off limits to the third-party mechanic?
Yes they do, there's not alot you can do without a computer but software is available to communicate with the ECU's. All new landrovers have gone over to the ford/jaguar system using IDS. This system is available on ebay but it aint cheap.
Hi, sorry, have you ever noticed on a Discovery 3 a knocking noise, at low speed or in parking, which seems to come directly from behind the steering wheel? Thank you.
Hi, yes, it's usually from the upper and/or intermediate steering shafts, LR have issued a bulliten on this fault and your dealer will be able to fix it by replacing the steering shafts
Strangest thing I've ever heard, normally they just squeel loudly due to being out of adjustment, I pulled the emergency release as the the brake was stuck on, it made this noise as it was trying to return to the latch position.

What causes the high pitched scream they normally produce when out of adjustment? Is there a slipping clutch in the actuator or something?

AshGarcia18 3 years ago
Thats not how I usually write, I was taking the piss!
The fault was in the actuator itself, the gears had sheared and it wouldn't drive to the latch position. I work at a landy dealer in south wales.
