I remember seeing Harry Potter 1 as though it was just yesterday. My parents woke my sister and I up early in the morning that day, while it was still dark outside. There was a meteor shower going on in the sky at around 4am. It was amazing. That same day we all went out to see Harry Potter in theaters. I myself had never read the books, but after seeing the movie I bugged my parents to buy me the books. I am now 22, have every single HP book on my shelf, and saw every movie since that day.
@Sallyallie89 same here! the movies got me into the books. I had to read chamber of secrets first though. I was getting them from the school library and Philosipher's stone was checked out >.<
I don't own every book though. I'm missing philosipher's stone and Prisoner of Azkaban. But I've real all of them multiple times.
@MrCheckersmcgee You should buy the ones you are missing off of ebay. I've seen some paperback versions for less than 10 dollars each, so that's not a bad deal. That way you can own them all =p
When I was younger at around 7 And the first harry potter movie came out, I thought it was shit and useless. Just few days ago, i heard that the movie came to an end. The one day While i was watching TV, I tuned in to HBO and found harrypotter and the socerer's stone. Than I realised, I've missed such a great movie. Than one by one, I watched. Lastly, I bought the deathly hallows part 1 and 2, and watched the movie and at the end, tears rolled down my cheeks cos iknewthere won'tbe anymore ofthis

To anyone who is annoyed that they changed the name in the American release, get over it! @wilson0213 American's aren't 'stupid'. It was changed to Sorcerer's Stone because the American publisher's were afraid that children wouldn't want to read a book with 'Philosopher' on the cover, and thought that 'Sorcerer' would spark more interest. JK Rowling said that she regretted this decision because it made the plot lose its link to alchemy, but couldn't do anything about it at the time. It has nothing to do with the intelligence of the American people.
@AnimeFreakazoido "The American publisher's were afraid that children wouldn't want to read a book with 'Philosopher' on the cover". That right there is proof that they assumed American kids aren't intelligent enough to know what "Philosopher" is..
@wilson0213 Since American culture is rather different from UK culture, most children who first pick up the book may not relate the term 'philosopher' to be anything magic-related, such as alchemy. The original age range target was children ages 9-11, after all. So if kids that young don't make the connection between Philosopher and Magic, it doesn't mean we Americans are any less intelligent. If the original age target had been higher, they wouldn't have bothered changing it at all.
@AnimeFreakazoido So what you're implying is that American kids would probably found it easier first picking up the book if they could understand the title more, this means that they would have little knowledge on what "philsopher" means, hence why they wouldn't know it had anything to do with magic so they wouldn't bother reading it. However, British kids had no problem reading the books or watching the movie because they had the knowledge of what "philosopher" meant.
@wilson0213 I'm sorry of American teaching methods offend you, but the majority of American children ages 9 to 11 really only have a vague idea of what a philosopher even is. We spend those years of history class learning more about our own country rather than others, and America is not famous for its philosophers, unlike European countries. I myself now refer to the first book as Philosopher's Stone, but back when I started reading I admit that 'sorcerer' was a term I was more familiar with.
@AnimeFreakazoido Fair enough, i take back my comment saying that Americans are stupid for using that word, but i still think by someone "assuming" they wouldn't understand it is very degrading don't you think?
@wilson0213 They're businessmen. They simply did what they thought would make the book sell better in America. Personally, I think it was a fair move in terms of commercial success - an 8 year old would most likely be drawn to a book that said 'Sorcerer's Stone' instead of 'Philosopher's Stone'. But I also agree with Rowling in that it takes away the title's relation to Alchemy. I would probably have read the series either way, but perhaps later than I actually did. We're cool now, yes? XD
@AnimeFreakazoido HONESTY, Don't Bother...Britain always Make themselves seem Rude and stupid...It's their own fault. They are the ones with no intelligence or manors at that fact...They are rude and disrespectful...And have bad teeth. thanks for sticking up for Americans!
Actually, the publishers didn't think kids would read a book with philosopher's in the title,so they asked Rowling if she would change it for the america release.
@NeoConnor1 So in other words, the publishers decided Harry Potter needed to be "dumbed down" for the American audiences.... They also changed a bunch of the wording as well. I remember looking at a page of the American Philosopher's Stone versus the Canadian and the US version had tons of the words and slang changed. It was way weird.
@Mitchigan14 Because they recorded the scenes twice - once saying "sorcerer's" for the US version and once saying "philosopher's" for the rest of the world. Sewriously. I remember seeing something about this in an interview with the cast or a DVD special or something ages ago.
I don't watch this movie series but from the trailers of the movies I've seen they look so much more realistic then this one! But this was 2001 they didn't have as good tecnology as they do today, but I think I'm going to start watching the movies then read the books
@Monday12121 How? The production and casting took place in 2000 therefore it could not have started filming in 1997. I remember them filming some of it at Durham Cathedral too in 2000. We went to try and see it because me and my family live in Sunderland which is practically next door to Durham City.
man o man they're all look and sound so young, event he special effects have changed alot. I remeber seeing the first movie back when i was finsihing PRIMARY school now im at Uni for gods sake. I remember i saw this before i read all the books and genuinly thought Snape was just the villain of the film. and Voldemort at the end scared the hell out of me
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows turned out to be jaw dropping! My buddy and I just recently experienced it leaked online. We discovered it at watch harry potter. us (no spaces)
The first one was the best by a landslide. I mean the beginning, mixing in the towns and whatnot with the young kids just starting. It was just seamless. Then they all took steroids and shot up by 3 feet in part 2 and it kinda lost some of the magic and started showing the seams.
After the 3rd one it felt like the director just said fuck it, lets just use what we've got for scenes and throw in some flashy shit. The hell with detail or story.
I was 4 when this came out....hard to believe it has been 10 years and I am 14 now! This is the first and still best Harry Potter movie....actually they are all great!

AnimeFreakazoido 6 months ago
@AnimeFreakazoido "The American publisher's were afraid that children wouldn't want to read a book with 'Philosopher' on the cover". That right there is proof that they assumed American kids aren't intelligent enough to know what "Philosopher" is..
wilson0213 6 months ago
@wilson0213 Since American culture is rather different from UK culture, most children who first pick up the book may not relate the term 'philosopher' to be anything magic-related, such as alchemy. The original age range target was children ages 9-11, after all. So if kids that young don't make the connection between Philosopher and Magic, it doesn't mean we Americans are any less intelligent. If the original age target had been higher, they wouldn't have bothered changing it at all.
AnimeFreakazoido 6 months ago
@AnimeFreakazoido So what you're implying is that American kids would probably found it easier first picking up the book if they could understand the title more, this means that they would have little knowledge on what "philsopher" means, hence why they wouldn't know it had anything to do with magic so they wouldn't bother reading it. However, British kids had no problem reading the books or watching the movie because they had the knowledge of what "philosopher" meant.
wilson0213 6 months ago
@wilson0213 I'm sorry of American teaching methods offend you, but the majority of American children ages 9 to 11 really only have a vague idea of what a philosopher even is. We spend those years of history class learning more about our own country rather than others, and America is not famous for its philosophers, unlike European countries. I myself now refer to the first book as Philosopher's Stone, but back when I started reading I admit that 'sorcerer' was a term I was more familiar with.
AnimeFreakazoido 6 months ago
@AnimeFreakazoido Fair enough, i take back my comment saying that Americans are stupid for using that word, but i still think by someone "assuming" they wouldn't understand it is very degrading don't you think?
wilson0213 6 months ago

It isn't called the Sorccers Stone. It's called the Philosphers Stone. I don't know why the American's had to change it:(
MadzCole12 7 months ago
@MadzCole12 I never understood that. why do they say sorccers stone in the movie then?
Mitchigan14 7 months ago
@Mitchigan14 I guess the word Philosophers was to big for them, or they didn't know what it meant!! So they actually changed the film.

Actually, the publishers didn't think kids would read a book with philosopher's in the title,so they asked Rowling if she would change it for the america release.
NeoConnor1 6 months ago
@NeoConnor1 So in other words, the publishers decided Harry Potter needed to be "dumbed down" for the American audiences.... They also changed a bunch of the wording as well. I remember looking at a page of the American Philosopher's Stone versus the Canadian and the US version had tons of the words and slang changed. It was way weird.
PaddySnuffles 6 months ago
@Mitchigan14 Because they recorded the scenes twice - once saying "sorcerer's" for the US version and once saying "philosopher's" for the rest of the world. Sewriously. I remember seeing something about this in an interview with the cast or a DVD special or something ages ago.

@Monday12121 cause it started filming in 97
Monday12121 7 months ago
@Monday12121 How? The production and casting took place in 2000 therefore it could not have started filming in 1997. I remember them filming some of it at Durham Cathedral too in 2000. We went to try and see it because me and my family live in Sunderland which is practically next door to Durham City.
