It's probably the 1994 Northridge Earthquake that made Psyclone such a terrible ride.
It suffered structual damage from the earthquake and despite getting repaired for safe operation, the ride dynamics were never the same. Thus, giving Psyclone a shitty reputation.
I've been on alot of coasters that have been demolished, but this is the only one I'm glad was torn down. It was so painful. In 2016, that thing could have been killing people if it was still running.
I bet the next ride to go will be viper. I think as of now, that is the weakest roller coaster there unless some one convinces me otherwise. I still like it tho. fun ride. just that everything now is better. I love the speed of terminator. I HATE when i go and Goliath is closed!!!
I rode this once. Don't remember much about it except that it was rough. Wasn't really anything spectacular about this coaster like there is with Goliath or Viper or X2 or Tatsu. Glad it's gone. Rode Terminator: Salvation a couple months ago. Great coaster, not a lot of big drops, but lots of speed. Glad Psyclone is gone.
Partly correct. Psyclone was designed by Dinn Corporation (infamous for designing big rides that inevitably aged horribly), but used B&M trains for most of its lifetime. And the trains were a large part to blame for the roughness, although the track didn't help either.
"The ride sustained structural damage after the Northridge Earthquake in 1994... The heavy trains took their toll on the track structure, and the coaster became very rough....A 2006 poll of roller coaster enthusiasts ranked Psyclone 178th out of 179 wooden roller coasters worldwide."
Really should have been condemned after the quake, but obviously it wasn't the only issue.
@Miserlou57 I know I'm not who you targeted for this question but I can give you an answer. The Dinn corporation, who designed this ride was infamous for building rides that aged horribly. An another example of a Dinn ride is the Predator at Darien Lake which I rode myself and will never ride again. Combine this with the damage this ride took from the Northridge earthquake and the heavy B&M trains that weren't really great and it all destroyed this ride. Rest in pieces Psyclone.
Interesting. I remember hearing it was noticeably different after the earthquake. I'm curious as to what kind of 'damage' or change a coaster could sustain after an earthquake while still being safe. LOL... If it were damaged, how could it still be safe?!? Anyway, thanks for the reply. I'm a mech engr student, and I like to know these kinds of details...
@Miserlou57 > There can be multiple things that make it a rough ride. You can't factor in the fact that a wooden coaster is supposed to toss you around some though. I thnk the biggest factor in what makes a coaster rough is simply bad engineering...cutting corners where they shouldn't with the design. A prime example is Son of Beast at KI...it would be an awesome ride if they had engineered it properly.
lol, i remember this ride. it was a good ride, but just a rough ride, it should of been called rough rider coaster, but it got taken off and replace right away which is cool too.
When I went on Psyclone, I bruised my hand from holding on so hard, trying to avoid injury. I also smacked my knee against the side of the car and bruised it. I'm happy to see the Terminator Salvation replace this terrible ride.
this ride was torture when i went on it(i was little) i broke my back. i remember my borther went on it twice, but we both swore NEVER to go on it again for ANY reason. the ride itself isnt scary, but it felt like a gigantic torture machine.
I used to love working on that ride just to see peoples faces getting on and quickly change when they come back in pain. I'm one of the ones responsible for getting this ride taken down haha.
If anyone of you know the ride Mouse Trap, I cut my head on that, nearly broke my arm and came off it crying when I was a kid. Perhaps you should make a sequel ;D
i was talking to this dude dat worked at magic mountain. Me n my frends were talking 2 him while he was on his way to his station. we were asking about closed rides. alot were removed for safety reasons. when we asked about cyclone, he said it was DEFINATELY for safety reasons
The ride itself would have been smoother if Magic Mountain checked the track. Unlike other woodies, this coaster had heavy B+M trains. The trains took their toll on the structure, and Magic Mountain watched that and not the track bed, thus leading to a bumpy, painful ride. If Magic Mountain properly maintained it, it would be running and pleasing riders today. *And how DARE you call any Summers and Dinn coaster a "Monstrosity" >:(
Um no, I used to work on that ride it was designed to be that way, was suppose to be a replica of the original ride cylone. This ride was worked on for hours by carpenters everyday before the ride opened.
wow. 5 minutes ago i was pissed i didnt get a chance to ride this. now im really glad i didnt ride it. i probably would have killed myself if you didnt make this video.
Oh my god! i hate rollercoasters!! When I was eleven, I went this kiddie one with my friend because she wanted me to come with her. I was like,''AHHHHH!!!!!!!'' i never wanna go on another one again!
I am happy that when i went to Six flags for the first time i was scared of Rollercoasters so i didnt want to do it.. NOW I REALLY DONT WANT TO DO IT! Looks painfull..
some of those oow my w/e hurts were fricking funny. yeh that ride hurts pretty good. i honestly wonder how many ppl broke their ribs on it. my friend honestly got off of it and said it didnt hurt too bad except my balls were bouncing on the seat. while for me my sides would get smacked cause id have to keep my arm over the side.
Actually a major reason why it was so rough had to do with the Northridge earthquake in 1994. The structure was really damaged by the quake, and they managed to "save" it. But as you can see... yea.
u all r such babies........i got on it wen i wuz 10 and it didnt hurt 1 bit....it wuz my firstcoaster nd its my favorite coaster...in fact, i got on it 3 tmes becuz i liked i so much...........im sorry, but whoevers idea it wuz to destroy it is fucked up.....
nope it was at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia California and I didn't think it was as bad as I was led to believe but I'm used to violent coasters so it didn't effect me much.
i was screaming OW MY FUCKING ASS the whole time on that ride is SO FUCKING HORRIBLE DONT GO ON...o wait U CANT GO ON IT ANYMORE BECAUSE IT SUCKED MY BALLS TO MUCH AND WAS TAKING OUT!
I'm super sure most coaster enthusiasts already got an idea like this SFMM Psyclone thing is the lamest woodie or roughest one out in the planet since it's way too far other Cyclone at Coney Island. =( This was really almost castrated a lot.
That ride hurts so f***ing bad. It's cool they knocked it down. Supposedly they're going to put flashback there. I hope we get a good flat ride in flashback's old spot.
Yeah it was just recently this past week demolished. all thats left is the transfer section and the main station. otherise, its history. Flashback is next, however, flashback may return to the mountain in 2008
w00t!! Video info updated to reflect this. I want to see picture of this ride in pieces, though. And I still think they should have literally blown it up or let people riot and tear it down.
I road this 8/14/93 and it was a great ride but after the 98 quake this ride was aweful. I returned to the park 11/17/06 and road it agine. To my surprise at first I couldent beleave it was empty. When I got my go on the ride I was in so much pain I thought I was casterated!
i dont think so. i mean, a kids section next to riddlers and deja vu? kids section is big enough in buggs bunny world. they hav to add another coaster.
i went on2 this coaster back in May and i didn't think it was all that bad, but then again, i'm used 2 violent coasters, i went on2 Ghostrider at Knott's in the front and that was the roughest coaster i have ever been on, i was feeling sorry 4 the people in the back when i got off Ghostrider.
i felt your pain too. i shouted stuff like "What kind of idiot built this ride!" and i even told my friend to punch me in the face if i ever wanted to ride that again. being punched in the face is just as bad as riding that piece of shit coaster.
Yeah, I have been on that ride.. that thing was indeed painfull. And I rode in the back, which I think makes you take on all the forces of the train! I had skin peeling off my hands becuase I tried to hold on the bar, since I didn't want to fall out. lol.
