It breaks my heart to hear the tension between Layne and Jerry in this interview. I love them both to death and it just hurts. It's so sad what ended up happening to such a beautiful friendship. They loved each other and I hate how drugs and jealousy got in the way of that.
What really sucks is you can tell Layne wanted to do more stuff with them. Shit, he said he thought they were going to do more, and you could hear it in his voice. I think he still had some of that passion left, but it wasn't enough.
If you read or listen to other interviews from Layne, that comment does not seem to fit. It was written in a book, by some writer who mostly interviewed Laynes Mom, it was not a recorded interview....at least that is what I have heard. IMO I dont think Layne ever said that.
@monox2k _____The quote is from Adriana Rubio's book "Layne Staley Angry Chair". She didnt record the interview and that is the only source of that statement, although its been reprinted many times. Since her book was published, Rubio has been critcized for it being more of a "crazed fan" book than a factual writing. Just saying, I dont buy her account of the interview. However, at that point Layne had been using heroin 24/7 for 6 years...so it tough to know what was really going on. RIP Layne
Yea I dont understand why people get mad at them for being dicks. If you were in a huge band and your lead singer goes into selcusion and he keeps refusing help for his problems every one of you would act the same way. I love layne but these guys wanted to tour and play and layne was a barrier in a way, now 14 years later were finally seeing something new from them. Wish it could have been sooner..

I feel so bad you can tell Layne is soooo fucked up can't remember frogs lyrics? he wrote it and fuck jerry he's like axl rose in it for the money and his own ways
If it wasn't for cantrell there is no fucking alice in chains and you would of never heard of layne staley. He wrote the majority of alices music and the lyrics. And did any of you people realize maybe the reason they were so tough on him was cause he was a lost cause who they couldn't do a thing to help him. He was the main problem in the band cause he couldn't get his shit together ultimatley bringing down the band.
By the end Layne had written over half of the lyrics across all the AIC albums. It is true that Jerry was the beating heart of the band but Layne's lyrics are credited for being the most honest of works in music history. I wouldn't be so quick to say he wouldn't have made it without Jerry.
You are so correct. I think he wrote the full version of "Sickman," as well. 'Dirt' was my favorite album by far, but all of their work was/is amazing. I even love their new stuff. I'm an AIC junkie lol.
Their new album was great, Layne or not, but Layne was a good soul with a great talent. "Alice in Chains" and "Jar of Flies" are my favorites. "Dirt" is phenomenal though. Not one weak song on it, and "Iron Gland" is probably the best "secret song" of that generation, along with "Endless, Nameless" by Nirvana. Now that I think about, I can't think of one weak song on any album, except MAYBE the box set.
"River of Deceit", "Long Gone Day", "Artificial Red", "All Alone" and "Wake Up" were all beautiful songs thanks to Layne's vocals (with compliments to great instrumental work).
@nimitz1983 yep, and Jerry is an artist and an alien abducted Elvis.. Jerry only likes money and success to me, if it wasn't for Layne I would never listen to AIC. Jerry is gross, Layne was an artist.
layne dont remember the songs from AIC cuz he wrote em on the spot and he didnt care so much an he never performed them after that except on the unplugged concert an you can see him reading the lyrics,it's not cause he's fucked up he just didnt give a damn by then, you can tell his heart wasnt in the AIC album it's just work for him
layne should have just done stuff as a solo act, recording covers, other peoples' songs, originals, whatever. he could've come in between or even during binges. maybe not, but that would have been cool.
Actually it was true...I was in Seattle from 1998 to 2000 and there were articles about Layne wanting to do another studio album but the other guys especially Jerry told him that if they were to do another album they would want to go on tour and promote it and that was something Layne didn't want to do.
@seanpq123 Because he COULDN'T tour. He was more interested in shooting drugs. I love Layne and AIC is my favorite band, but he couldn't help himself, and that's why the original AIC could never quite fulfill their potential.
Metallica sucks. I hate Metallica. Stop talking about Metallica already! I love Alice. I love Alice in, I fucken LOVE Alice in Chains!

Layne: "I think we'll do something else..probably"
Heh.. tough quote to listen to there.
Especially when how a year later he said the AIC guys weren't even his friends. Things really went down hill in a hurry after this.

Well the quote I read in regards to Layne on Alice was: "Those guys aren't my friends."
It was in a magazine interview he did a few months prior to dying.
