the reels strong enough, looks like a penn 12/0,might be a 9/0 same thing we use for land based shark fishing, it has more than enough drag for a halibut, but if you lock all the way down with out a harness, well have fun going swimming lol
The problem may've been the drag setting was too low , or maybe it's that the reel is not strong enough for the fish the guy had hooked. As soon as the line was being pulled out fast, I would've tightened it as much as possible ; while letting the fish be able to take out line, but slowly. A good and suitably strong reel would permit this.
So, how does the story end? Did the guy lose the fish, or get it?

@gadxyz i was just thinkin that... lubrication before insertation...
"you got to lick it before you stick it"
hahahah, seriously tho, ive never seen a reel smoke like that... fishermen talk about it like its a thing to say... but wow... this is just ridiculous
its really rare that a halibut does this, theyre usully dead weight. last year we caught a 205 pounder, and when we hooked it, we thought it was a seal or a salmon shark because our bait was a salmon head. i bet this one was a huge fish. nice video.
I agree I've caught a few salmon sharks and man do they ever run. They should have pulled anchor and started chasing it That's what we did to get mine.
Since you own a baitcaster and a fairly decent and popular brand and model can I ask you a question. I bought a Penn Long beach 68 in like new condition. Is attaching it to a tuna rod a good thing, would I be able to cast with a 100-130lb rated tuna rod if so I need thicker line that 100lb power pro (20lb diameter) to be able to fit it properly on the dual set of rollers that this specific rod has without the thin line possibly falling off the rollers, correct? or incorrect. Thanks bro.
get a rod with good rollers. properly designed rollers won't let the line to get between the frame and roller so it has no choice but to either be loose or on the roller.
damn bat ray ... its not any thing good i think but i could be wrong .... cant be a marlin or tuna . its not jumping so... its not a halibut i really dont think so....
Reels do smoke, usually with fish that fight in a straight line, not jumping, such as Tuna and Mackerel. You need to pour water on it during the run or all the line on the reel can be damaged, as well as plastics in the

Not a halibut. You probably had a fish on the hook that was eaten by a shark or seal.

YES, they are both Penn Senator 6/0 reels. These are the best reels for deep sea fishing to pier fishing reels in the world.
Both have extended handles, which I've noticed only slow you down. It also makes the handling of the rod unsteady so I do not recommend them
