He also wrote the score to Franco Zefferelli's "Romeo & Juliet" back in the early 1970s. If you've never heard this incredibly gorgeous soundtrack, you're missing out. It's breathtaking!
Nino Rota is my great great uncle. well my great grandma, who i call Nana, adopted Nina Willings or Nina Rota (she goes by both)and Nino is her real father. cool eh? i wish i had the chance to meet him.
well, i know that my great grandmother, whom i call nana, adopted nina, whos real father was nino. she may be the real daughter of my nana though. i try asking my nana and she wont tell a soul the whole story. i need to watch the godfather. im 16 and have never seen it. sad i know. is it good?
Nino is actually the only classical and film composer who composed prolifically for both fields (around 150 in each) that I know of. He spent his first 20 years as a classical composer only. He gave us much more than the Godfather, including Romeo & Juliet and The Taming of the Shrew, the films of Fellini, several scores for Visconti, King Vidor's War & Peace, Henry Cass' the Glass Mountain and lots of chamber music, opera, ballet, symphonies, concertos, etc.
...He went against the accepted norm of Italian 'classical music' from the '50s on, continuing to compose melodically, however he wanted, isolating from others but keeping true to himself and his belief in culture. He also was a director of a conservatory for the last 30 years of his life, including teaching the young world famous conductor Riccardo Muti. There's a lot to learn. :)
Perhaps my favourite film score of his is Il Gattopardo.
Many tx Boldark for this video! I loved Nino Rota from the Fellini's films. His music for Amarcord and 8 1/2 is such an integral part of the movies and of our feelings when we watch them. But now with this short documentary you've uploaded I appreciate Nino Rota even more and know where to look for more of his music.
I came to appreciate his music because of one single article I read in a music catalog. It stated, "We loved Nino Rota's music BEFORE the Godfather movie ever came out."

Che peccato che in Italia sia caduto nel dimenticatoio.
Nella sua casa a Roma, a piazza delle coppelle, non c'è neanche una targa a ricordarlo.
Nel 2011 sarà il centenario della nascita, speriamo bene.

Im not a follower of classic music, but this guy bought his ticket to the immortality giving to The Godfather that exceptional piece of art.
