You said that you were studying icelandic. What books, CDs and other media would you recommend for that? It´s currently number 1 on my "languages still to learn" list but all I got is this one site, icelandic online or someting, and all you get there is grammar exercises and grammar exercises and grammar...
To me, I think Indonesian is quite complex. well, you don't need tenses and conjugations but there are a lot of variations in the spoken language, and prefix + postfix.
@laoshu505000 Thanks! I hear Norwegian was the easiest for english natives (Dutch once youre past the difficult pronunciation) Do you know how it compares to Indonesian?
Congratulations on your effort however I have a comment.
I think your system has an error of principle. Languages didn't appear out of nowhere to end in books that need to be learned.
Every single language is the evolution of ancient and mostly dead languages, at some point if you know those basic roots, you will understand all the languages because words will have common roots. This is the principle of etymology and it exists in every language.
「何処、何処で日本語を勉強しますか。何処で住んでいますか。何処で日本人合いますか。・・・(i couldnt read that part) 仕事をしますか。どの・・・(i can't read the rest of it)」 Cool! You're learning japanese too! :D がんばってねぇ〜☆★!
I am learning German and French what language should I learn that you think would complement that I want to add another. I am pretty far a long in German and that is my favorite language.
I just tend to look at a couple of words in my Welsh dictionary and my Japanese dictionary. I guess I should do more. I am going to attempt using Facebook for languages.
I'm into 6 right now: Russian, Portuguese, French, Hungarian, Turkish and German. Some people call me crazy or stupid, but I know I'll be completely fluent in all these languages within 2 years of study, and for me IT IS FUN :)
@iammotanz They call you stupid because they themselves feel stupid, for wasting their life in front of tv, eating pizza, and are too weak to change that.

How is it going learning Icelandic? Most of the foreigners here in Iceland whom I have spoke to think Its very difficult to understand our grammar and also to pronounce the words right. By the way, because we Icelanders are only about 320.000 people, dont you think Its special that one of us should find you here on youtube in this big world? In the end I wanna thank you for those videos, they are really encouraging me to keep learning english (hope this text is understandable) and spanish.
During the video you showed only a page of teach yourself italian (chapter 15) with the title "cos'hai fatto oggi?". The correct construction of the sentence is "cosa hai fatto oggi?". Probably better change grammar book...
You are inspirational man. It is incredible how you learned so many languages, with such an organized system. I kind of go back and forth between languages, but currently learning Icelandic. Are there any online resources you could recommend? I use icelandiconline.is but I am looking for others. Takk!
Also impressed by what looked like Japanese if I saw correctly. :)
This is honestly the best time-management system I have ever heard of. I was getting a bit anxious of how I would be taking three in school next year, focusing on complete fluency in two, and studying three or four on the side, but now I'm confident that I'll easily find the time. I'm so glad I watched this video and can't wait to try this out. Thanks.
this is hilarious. people say the same thing to me. how could you be studying three or so at the same time? I like it as it appears you do to. AWESOME!
Hello Moses! I started to really study Serbian again I guess I just got the hunger to really go at it this time. I can say a few phrases and make little sentences. :)
Thanks for this video. It's really helpful. My kind of way of learning is a little similar, especially when I start a new language. Although my brain can't kind of divide into many different languages. Maybe it's a matter of practice, too.
thats just great!! its funny to see this because i also started to make plans like ths after studying a while (at the moment i am learning russian and japanese and my russian became realy good i think) the only problem i see is that after a while a language becomes boring because i am not patient enough (but i think thats more a personal problem ;D ) and after all i just want to say thank you for all your videos they are just great and they motivate me!!!
hey bro i have a few cambodian lessons on my channel...you're pretty good at self learning. Check out my lessons, suggestions and feedback would be appreciated =]
Doesn't look like you've worked on French much recently. If you wanna practice, hit me up on Skype (my username is on my profile.) I'm not a native, but I've been studying it for almost 6 years now.
@laoshu505000 yeah, I,ll keep going my listening has gotten better I can say that with confidence still have a lot more of that to do but, that's rather simple to do for me now. I learn vocab in context as well. I plan to start chatting with natives next month so I can build up from there as well. I plan to learn a lot of other languages as well the polyglot community here on Youtube has inspired me especially you Laoshu. I,ll be sure to ask questions about JP and Languages in general soon.
@laoshu505000, Yeah, it's a pain alright lol. But, there are days when even though it's really time consuming I get urges to just going I don't know I never get the learning drive I get when studying Japanese in comparison to Spanish. I,am Hispanic so My Spanish isn;t so bad I,am just rusty that's all. I don't even think I,am going to bother touching Korean till I,am in the Intermediate level in Japanese cause Korean is going to take the same amount of effort i,am putting in for Japanese.
@DarkOchestra2008 You'll be alright. Just keep at it and with time, you will be able to get to the level you're trying to reach. Let me now if you have any questions about anything.
Great video, great method, and beautiful cats! Oh, they are so how cute! (I know, I am off topic, but can't help it in this case.) Thanks for another great video.
I was wondering if you do all of your languages in the same space. In my case, and because of the way my brain works, there is tendency to do different languages in different spaces. I have been doing Malay in the laundery matt (I circumambulate this small building each time I memorize a new word), Modern Greek at Walmart (the fast lane in usually slow enough to allow me to read a few pages out of the Assimil book). I do Ancient Greek while circumambulating campus.
@laoshu505000 I think once I actually read about a family who spoke in a different language according to which room of their house they were in. That would be fantastic!
Thanks for this video, they are always really motivational.
I have question: for that method you use with the tally charts, say if you have the Pimsleur, Michel Thomas and Teach Yourself audio courses, how would you use those together? Or would you just use one and move onto another one when you finished the last?
@BrokenClocks08 I've never used Michel Thomas course, but I would definitely use Teach Yourself in conjunction with pimsleur. That's what I've been doing for Italian and it works out great.
Moses, why you don´t learn german? It is the language of great philosophers like kant, Hegel, Schelling. The language of great scientists like Einstein, Heisenberg, Planck. The language of the greates musiscians like Mozart, Beethoven, Bach.
It is said that only the german language is made for expressing deep thouhgts like in "the critic of pure reason" of kant and it is the language of Goethe and Schiller
Quick question about Pimsleur. Im using the lessons for Japanese and im wondering if you listen to a lesson throughout the day until you get it then the next day move on to the next lesson, or do you listen to a single lesson over a couple of days until you get it all?
@Jswift255 Since Pimsleur has so much repetition, I think listening to the 30 minute lesson one time is enough. I normally just move on after that. You will find that the same stuff will come up again and again later on.
I really admire you, and hope you keep up your good work! Thanks for posting this video, because I was just about to write to ask you the questions you answered here.
i have nothing but the highest level of respect for you. your discipline is an inspiration in many ways. so much so, i have committed myself to learn arabic, then spanish and chinese.
Hello Moses. I really appreciate your videos and what you've done for everyone here. I wanted to tell you about a great tool I've been using (and enjoying) to learn Mandarin. The website jw.org has books and articles in pdf form in like 50 languages along with mp3 audio for a lot of them. It usually has the same material in english to compare. I noticed they have some Navajo, Icelandic, and other languages you study. The material is of a religious/ social nature. Let me know what you think.
@DopeSpace9 Normally, I will wait until I have full understanding of the dialogue before shadowing it. That way, I won't have to look at the book. After listening to it for so long, it just sticks to your brain. You can even hear the dialogue when you'renot even listening to it! lol. To answer your question, yes, you must memorize the passage. Don't just memorize it though, you need to make sure you understand it completely..from the end to the beginning!
I find that I often have trouble with concentration for long periods of time. Do you ever experience this when studying for multiple hours at a time, and if so, how do you overcome it?
@aaronposehn That's a good question Aron. I would say, cut back on the time if you find yourself losing concentration. This rarely happens to me because I be so deep into the language that I don't even notice my three hours being up. If three hours is too long for you, I would cut back a bit. Normally what do you do during your time of study? I guess I would say, it depends on what you're doing.
I might need to start doing this sometime in the future since right now i,am studying Japanese as much as possible and studying Spanish about 20% of the time as well I split the days I study Japanese and Spanish though more Japanese since I,am High Beginner in Spanish. My current goal for Japanese is low-Intermediate by Early Next Year So I,am focusing more on JP than anything. Learning Kanji readings and Compounds is really time consuming lol.
this is a good idea, im working on spanish and swedish right now and because im not new to learning languages comprehension is probably the hardest thing. it helps to speak it but you cant speak it if you dont understand people haha. i enjoy grammar tho, ive studied (not fully learned)so many langauges i love how grammar works. i like reading about how grammar works in other languages that i dont even intend on studying.
do you have pimsleur spanish? how is it?ive never bought a pimsleur course
@dudeonthasopha No doubt man. I looooove grammar. Don't get me wrong. It's just, at the beginning, I don't mess around with it. Especially when it's a difficult language. I usually wait until I get to an adequate level - intermediate at least, then start studying grammar.
I don't have pimsleur Spanish, but I can imagine it being the same as Italian and the others. I would highly recommend getting Pimsleur for any language at the beginning.
@haqi9fly You can start with the Teach Yourself Mandarin and get a lot out of it. I've never tried the Assimil course for it, but I'm sure it's a good choice as well.
Hey! I have a quick question for ya. When you shadow do you do more blind shadowing, shadowing looking at the english translation, shadowing looking at the target language dialogue, or a combination? Thanks for all your videos and tips ! :)
Did your Easy Italian Reader come with a CD-Rom? I have the Easy French Reader w/ the CD and I find it to be helpful with increasing my familiarity with french pronunciation...like I still need to work harder on my french but the Easy French Reader seems to be helping.
the first video you did explaining the charts you use helped me alot! you had all those parenthesis empty jaja!.. i use this "technique" but with assimil books and with german french and portuguese.. it does work.. so funny when you say "it's like cheating" jaja.. saludos mi querido amigo!.
I admire you!!!I can speak greek, english, italian, spanish and I'm learning german and norwegian;)Greetings from Cyprus!!!

@dudeonthasopha I would definitely use it in conjunction with the teach yourself series.

darkmatter88 11 months ago
@darkmatter88 I do a combination of both. That technique is VERY good!

Did your Easy Italian Reader come with a CD-Rom? I have the Easy French Reader w/ the CD and I find it to be helpful with increasing my familiarity with french pronunciation...like I still need to work harder on my french but the Easy French Reader seems to be helping.

@Kaytube19 It sure did. That series is excellent. I have it also for French and Spanish.
