The so called "Cuban Pete" was born and raiced and died in 2008 in Puerto Rico. He was the creator in NYC of most of the basic maneuvers of Salsa dancing that we still do today.
The music is based in Afro Cuban, but the modern Salsa Dancing was created mostly in NYC by PR's and some Cubans and yes some American dancers too that didn't like to do it Samba Style (side to side). PR's created most of the song hits in the last 30 years also.
