Ahh Yes,,,The most entertaining singer of all times! Joe Cocker is an Icon,,to say the least. What a singer he is !!!!! Indeed one of the greatest of all times. Nice Post,,,Thank You Kindly!!! Tim
I liked the Gary Wright song back when, but this song makes it seem like a lazy ballad. Heck, Wright's song is just to our right. Joe can do heavy rock.
@TheDavedt I'm a HUGE Gary Wright fan, so I won't say this puts his version to shame, but WOW. I just found this a couple of days ago and I have to say it's the best version of the song I've heard.
This tune was the highlight of the Night Calls disc from back in 1992. This disc was all cover material, and is very enjoyable. The cubist cover art is also terrific!
I completely appreciate Cocker's adaptation of this song, though it completely takes second fiddle to the original. One of the things that seems to glaring to cover efforts is the attention to the music, rather than just the vocals. The original version of this song - that intro - is just so powerful... and important! I put it up there with Boston's "Long Time" intro with the best ever. For me - my opinion as a musician - cutting that intro out is like cutting the preamble from the constitution.
Hehe, you do have a point there; the original's intro ruled! But c'mon, you can't really hear that lilting, keyboard-laden intro being followed by that BAH-DAH-DAH riff, now can you? :)
Old Joe is smokin' Joe once again,he really is an under-appreciated talent. I can tell he's holding back a little,if he really cut loose that voice of his would probably drown out the band!
JOE GOES METAL!!! Haha, I love it!!! Seriously, doesn't he just have the knack for knowing which songs to cover and then how to do them?? It's truly amazing. I never in a million years would have thought Joe Cocker would cover this song, and in this way. And...IT TOTALLY WORKS! And rocks. And rules. Can't say it's better than the original, as Gary Wright's timeless classic was also great and worked so well in its own way, but this is definitely AT LEAST as great!
@stel48tz It's Earl Slick... He used to play with David Bowie. His playing style is very similar to SRV. He does the solos for Lets Dance live (SRV did the studio playing)
I think not... I'm no expert, but I do think SRV always played a strat (no strat here), had stringy hair (poofy 80s hair here), and was perhaps a bit uglier than this guy (who ain't no beauty queen anyway). IMHO
Joe owns this song now... sweet

It's a wonderful cover.
I've heard that love is alive in other songs and places, but when I hear that statement in this song, it always rings. true.

Would have been kind of difficult, considering SRV died in 1990.

Stevie Ray Vaughan played with Joe on a tour in the first half of 1990 a little while before diying. The guitar player here is Phil Grande
