Mark Cavendish can't ride hills or helps his team mates and of course he cannot win a race by himself therefore Peter Sagan it is sooo much more of a rider that Cavendish. Peter can climb and sprint.
This guy trains as a sprinter, comes from a track background, and was officially clocked at 78kph. Anyone who races road bikes will admit that this number makes him a freak of nature.
@mikroos But whats 40km/h for 20km good for? You'll tire yourself out. And you said you where "semi-pro", if there is such a thing, so aren't most of your races 40-60km long? And FYI 62km/h isn't that hard, even for an independant.
@erik9920 wrong, in one of the other videos on Mark, he says that he had been working really hard on keeping his head up, to increase aerodynamics... my guess is that it's just from tiredness maybe... or like the guy before you says, to check on other riders.
Amazing rider. There's a new breed of cycling fans that are driving me up the wall though. They recognise the pinnacle of cycling is the GC of the tour but think they are being clever by dismissing people like Cav because he doesn't compete in the GC! The guy's already a legend for winning these races/stages.
His top speed at the end of a race is around 76km/h, but then he is usually quite tired. His top speed in a totally rested state is probably above 80kmh, maybe even 90.
lol, had to look through my pile of cycling mags to check that one :p it was health and fitness for cyclists (one of the cycling weekly quarterly mags), had all about his sprint tips. Yeah, it'd be interesting to see Cav and Greipel have a crack at each other in a sprint but I don't think they've been in the same races this year.
final stage tour de france. Only one rider in the picture. That particular win did not get enough kudos. There were no competitors. He won a 'SPRINT' by a country mile. Incredible team, incredible sprinter.
..'I need another pain killer...' where's the footage of George with his broken bones pulling the High Road train right through Garmin to set up Cav for his most beautiful finish ever.
I'm afraid you're wrong, mate. I'm an amateur and I do 55 kph in a flat-out sprint. I think therefore that Cav's speed would rather be closer to 70-75 kph in the end. I don't believe in 90 kph though as even the guys on the track can't achieve this kind of speeds (AFAIK at least).
Looks like we're both in agreement then, think you missed the mph off the end of my comment, which would put the speed I quoted in the same kph range as your comment at about 70-75. When our local GB rider Jamie Staff makes another appearance on one of our club runs I'll see if he can shed any light on the subject. I've managed 64kph in a sprint, but that was with a massive tailwind so I'd put that under exceptional circumstances.
no problems :) think I shouldn't have used such an old style measurement system like mph to get a point across, us brits are probably the only ones who still use it lol.
Coming back to our talk... I saw an interview today with guys who took part in Cancer Council race (warm-up before Tour Down Under). One of the guys interviewed was Chris Sutton and some guy from Team Saxo Bank and they said their speed in the end was 72 and 74 kph. I believe therefore that Cav could hit maybe something like 78 kph, but not more IMO. Cheers!
@mikroos yea i think ur right, im a semi-pro 15 y/o kid and with proper warm up i can reach around 62km/pu. but im a sprinter anyway, i normally do rounds 10-20km with an average of 40km/pu on my own. not to brag, but i reckon your statement.
I'd say a lot faster he's launched (starts his sprint) at 200-250m and I counted 9 seconds until the finish line so 9 seconds for 225m is 90km/h or 56.25mph.

so maybe next year we´ll see cav vs. greipel!!!
