Kids today dont know nothing about this.. I remember this song as if it came off the press... Real groups.. I love it. Ray Parker Jr. and Raydio.. Let me ask y'all.. A move Ray Parker Jr Played in in the late 80's... What was the name.. it was based out of Chicago.. Know the name........? Eninmey Territorriy.. good flick.. check it out... Deep and real..
Listening to this song makes you lone for back in the day music. Today's filth on the radio leaves a lot to desire. Thank you whomever you are who posted this. OK,it's not fair that i'm 49yrs.old and this is my generation of music, but the world know's the late 60's thru the early 90's black music ruled.Nothing against hall&oats, they we're my boy's to but America has never produced anything like this time period,it's eternal.
Yea! i was right they LOOPED IT DEY LOOPED IT NOT JUST DUPED IT HAHAHAHA. Looped the Flute and the Horns. Blah bring back the funk and soul and LIKE NAS SAID HIP HOP IS DEAD! THIS IS MUSIC, TALENT. SOME RAPPERS ARE GREAT LYRICISTS AND HAVE GREAT FLOWS BUT C'MON. DEY LOOPED IT! HAHA AND THAT WOULD'VE BEEN Erik Sermon from EPMD who probably came up with it, as he put Red on, and did his production early on, as well as introduced him on the song HeadBanger. Crafty! But you can't hide good music!
@musicminor25 Ok cool. I was seeing if there was some kind of beef between the two. I'm glad I was wrong and Herbie actually worked on both projects. Thanks
This tune was just a classic Disco-Era slow jam! The DJ would put this ...or Chic-Warm Summer Night...or The Bee Gees -How Deep Is Your Love on.That was your cue to "close a deal". Was Ray Obiedo on this cut too?
Ray Parker, Jr. created some of the finest musical moments from the late 70's / early 80's.......a time when the "Disco" craze was at it's peak. It was a pleasure to purchase Rays' albums back then, because he & his group "Raydio" stayed true to the REAL R&B/SOUL "flavor" of that time.......they kept it simple, and DAMN GOOD!
I'm 26 can't remember these songs and where I was but this was a good era and I appreciate these songs...all of those artist whether it was sexual or grooving it was all funky love it
wow me and the fellas sing this song at a talent show I believe in 1980 at JC Harmon KCK. We blew and all the girls screamed.{I was the lead of course}
I was 14 when I really got into Ray Parker Jr and Raydio and their music was the background sounds to all of my sexual encounters with 16 year old girls!!!!
Just remembering, someone else has made (or covered) this around the same time and I'm not sure which is the original. This time it's a woman singing, nice too. I remember the DJ back in the day actually mixing the both!
It's on the Herbie Hancock album, "Magic Windows". The difference is that there are more synthensizers and Vickie Randle sings the lead. Ray composed it with Herbie for the "Two Places at The Same Time" LP. Another monster composition that they did together with Alphonse Mouzon is "Stars In Your Eyes" from Hancocks "Monster" LP. Gavin Christopher sings the lead and Ray plays the bass and guitar. He's amazing!
I've searched for this song for years. I was in love with a young lady in Brighton, MA. This song I used to listen to with the intent of serenading her with this song. I never got the opportunity, but it was great time in my life. She was my first love.
Love this to the bone! Surprised no rap artist has used this (or maybe they have, or not that I'd want them too anyway, unless they do it well). This beautiful track is best left alone. I remember some DJ dropped this on LWR back in the day and I was hooked ever since. Love the use of the Rhodes and that bass, can't help it. RPJ's silky smooth voice and great rhyming is awesomely cool too. Best track.
@ezearl Yeah, I know...I jus' sampled this jam!!! Red sampled the Isaac Hayes version (which U can tell that Ray Parker was influenced by in this jam)!!!
@ayohmamaee I must apologize to U, ayohmamaee...I always thought this was the sample for Redman's joint, but it isn't...it's Isaac Hayes...if U hear his, the sound so freakin' similar...that "fluttering horn" bit!!! I'm man'n up...LOL
REDMAN. HIS FIRST HIT. "TONIGHT'S DA NIGHT". THE MAIN HOOKS ARE SAMPLED OR COPIED AND OBVIOUSLY THE TITLE OF THE SONG. BUT THE RAP WAS NOT THE SAME SUBJECT. Sorry for the all caps. But check out that flute sound in the background and the jazzy horns, right after the horns they are totally in REDMAN'S TONIGHT'S DA NIGHT. THE BEAT might be. Dunno, was never that into him. BUT YES CHECK THAT REDMAN SONG. YOU REALLY HAD TO LISTEN CLOSE CAUSE OF ALL THE SAMPLE SUING BY THAN. 1!
Also Retro. I agree I lose a lot of respect for rappers because the sampling or copying as I remember the horns and flute lasting longer in Redman's tracks Tonight's Da Night, it just seems so cheap! Like what happened to real creative musicians? And that song the only reason I recognized it here, is because it made that first solo Redman song a hit. It was so catchy as it is here. Rappers though did keep people paid. George Clinton (to a point) Rick James, Wild Cherry, etc.
I know this sort of not the norm since this post is suppose to be about music. But this song calms Mr. Chip's nerves. Man I can't believe how much deeper the Somali Pirate thing is!!! I hope the President can see if we have light at the end of the tunnel before we kill more of these "Child" Soldiers damn man we can't win for losing!
This album was soo hot and this track was the panty peeler off of the album. One of the great seduction songs of all time. Let's face it Ray Parker Jr. does not get half the credit he deserves. This boy was bad bad to the bone. Nowadays he's making quite a name for himself as a smooth jazz guitarist.
Man love this cut...but Ray sometimes you said things that "injured your great musik" ...may that be in the past...swell jam...man wish I could go back to those good times...but the Prez will show us the way.Peace.
Ray Parker Jr. and Herbie Hancock collaborated a couple of jams for sure. Even though RPJ wasn't very gifted in the vocals, his style sure struck a cord with the ladies ...and when it comes to slow jams, isn't that all that really matters?..lol
Herbie Hancock did his own version (with a different singer) on his 'Magic Windows' album from 1981.I only found out Raydio did the original in...well the year of my birth:1980

@coreyaustin1 This song was 1st done by Ray & Raydio!!!
The cut was written by Ray & Herbie!!!
They used the same basic rhythm track on both versions adding a few extra parts on Herbie's version!!
Also replacing the male vocals with females on Herbie's!!
