I own this recording of Cavaleria Rusticana. It was recorded in 1940 and as Pietro Mascagni was still living, he conducted this recording himself. He also gave a spoken preface before the beginning.
Beniamino Gigli was a student of Enrico Rosati, who taught James Melton
and Mario Lanza. Gigli's discography and longevity in singing, establishes the fact that he understood the Art of Bel Canto which no one, Impressarios, Conductors or Vocal (?) Teachers, comprehend today.
I love this andante, actually largo, excellent use of fiato! But even he has a slight problem on the last note, though, it's a bit ingolato and he seems at the bottom of his air resources. The Siciliana is extremely difficult.
Singing with an open sound in the high tessitura is very unusual to hear from Gigli (he usu. covers the top notes) and is a risky venture. Guess the effect called for it though.
