I remember watching a British production on TV by World in Action, profiling the remarkable work of Jackie Pullinger, a British missionary who shared the love of Jesus with the residents of the Walled City. Drug addicts were miraculously healed of their addiction, as they prayed and asked Jesus to give them a new life. Jackie and the new converts set up St Stephen's Society to help addicts. Although the Walled City is gone, the society continues its work.

I lived there when I was a boy ... It is pity that I don't understand German. This documentary is very good indeed. It shows the real situation.... Although the people were poor, they all were hard-working and felt happy to each dollar they earned.....

The Kowloon Walled City was, technically, never British territory, which is how it wound up the way it did. More to the point, the de jure country that actually possessed it (the People's Republic of China) didn't want the bother of trekking through British territory (Hong Kong New Territories) to police the Walled City, and the British considered the Walled City outside of their jurisdiction, so governance (such as it was) fell to the street gangs.
