WOW! I too remember listening to this on the radio. We lost to Kansas the week before and it felt like the whole season was going into the toilet, but that touchdown is still the most memorable one for me anytime Joe's name is mentioned. I think he had hurt himself in practice before the season started and he just didn't seem the same as in '73 & '74. It seemed Elvis Peacock was getting the ball more, though Joe was still returning kicks. I think he ran one back on Colorado (or Pitt?).
Do you remember the picture of Joe Washington in sports illustrated when he was at Oklahoma? He was leaping over a would be tackler. That was one of the greatest action photo's ever. I remember back in the seventh grade I rated Joe as the best runningback in football. I still believe he was the best runner in football. Had Joe gibbs had him or Minnesota or the rams in those days he would be close to Jim Browns rushing record. With a line he was unstoppable.
Longtime fan from ok. I still have an OU program that was autographed by the 75 team when i was at a practice one day. Got to meet and talk with all the greats, Joe, Billy, Steve Davis, Tinker Owens, Jimbo Elrod and of course the Great Selmon bros, Switzer, Elvis etc. Also had autographed red/white football but played with it as a kid and lost all the signatures...Dumb huh...As a kid u do stupid things...At least i kept the program along with my comics lol.....Ty for the video and memories.
I remember these days, like they where yesterday. I was in the ninth grade and also a wishbone running back, with great skills like Lil Joe, my Idol. I would watch Oklahoma games when ever they where on tv and highlight films on Sunday on the Barry Switzer show. Then go out and emulate Joe's moves when I played. I wanted to be the best, so in my mind it was just me and Joe. Barry Sanders came later, he was younger.
Joe Washington, best described by Barry Switzer: "like smoke through a keyhole" for his ability to slip through and make great runs when defenders thought he was down! One of the greatest players in OU Sooner football history and a REALLY sweet guy too! I've met him and both of his parents and they're all great people--the best!
I was like 12 years old at the time sitting on the edge of the sofa listening to this radio play call. One of the great moments in Sooner history indeed.
the nfl wasted this great talent he should have went to hall of fame, that monday night game should have told them to play 30 times a game.reggie bush couldn't wear his jock strap
Good stuff, Michigan fan here, my 1st game I can remember was the 1976 Orange bowl, Sooners prevailed 14-6 I think. Bo said that game was the only one he could remember that his team was not good enough to win.
Context - it's 4th and one for OU at the Mizzou 23. Under 2 minutes left. Score MU-27 OU-20. OU has trailed the whole game. This wasn't on TV so all of Oklahoma was listening to Mike Treps make this call. Sooner Magic at its best.
Ou led 20-0. Then Mizzou scored 27 unanswered points. OU had a 4th and 1 at the 29 with about 3 minutes left in the game. Then history was made. This is not to diss you, just to clairfy. Also this was one week after the 23-3 loss aginst Kansas the week before.
Joe Washington was, quite simply, the greatest running back to ever play the game of college football.

Remember this also. Joe had a near career ending rookie season injury I believe it was the preseason.
