There was a girl in Brooklyn who hit someone because she was texting and driving. It was about a year ago. I don't remember if he died or just ended up in the hospital. She was Jewish and he wasn't so some were feeling sorry for HER.
how dangerous is it? obviously, loss of life. even worse though, the financial and moral hit at the same time. if someone is killed because of your texting while driving, automatically, expect millions in a major lawsuit. if your under 21, you have to call your parents and inform them their entire pension is about to get stripped thx to legal fees and tort damages, in a shitty economy......
Seriously, to text and drive, all you have to do is not be a complete dumbass. If you text on main street, you deserve to crash. If you text on the highway, you deserve to crash.
If you text on a dirt road, sparsely populated residentials, or at stoplights: you're fine.
@zzap999 Some christian you are. There is nothing wrong with txting at stop lights or stop signs or at rush hour or on dirt roads. I live in Montana, but have txted while driving in most metropolitan areas around the US. Guess what? no wrecks. Piss off and learn something about the world. That is what I pray for.
@noobasdfjkl Sure. You sound like the drunk driver that told the cop that you only had one drink. I've seen your type at stop lights. When the light turns green your still texting and holding up traffic behind. Pay attention. Right when you think the coast is clear and start texting, bam! your dead or somebody else.
@zzap999 I've seen your type. Got their GED at 34 and still can't use the proper form of "you're."
YOU'RE an idiot. There is no law against not going immediately at a green light. Most people could use something to interrupt their self-important hurry. I haven't hit anybody yet. Don't plan on it. You know, perhaps YOUR brain simply can't take simple tasks. hmmm.......
YOU'RE the kind of person who thinks that because their kid is bullied in elementary school, all bullies should be put in jail.
@noobasdfjkl In the Autobahn in Germany, no eating/drinking, cell phone, etc. while driving or else a ticket. That is their whole driving culture, focus, focus, focus only on driving the car. Furthermore, their high school driving classes teaches kids the same thing and plus additional driving lessons in differing road conditions and how to maneuver out of bad situations. Learn from the Europeans. They invented the automobile.
i lost my wife when a 16yr kid was texting and driving it was a two lane road and she was stop at a red light the kid was going 63 mph in a 35 mph .this needs jail time for people how drive and text

You need to be more than just slightly over the leagal limit to actually be impaired. And you dont need to have your eyes glued to your phone to text. And you shouldnt be following someone that close anyway. If youre smart about it its not a problem. Its just something for people to blame things on. You could just as easily crash into something while taking a drink from your bottle of water. Thats just my opinion...
@Lemmyshruya4o That's just your opinion? Drivers like you [assuming you drive] are the type that get my buddies and I killed when we ride. "If you're smart about it, it's not a problem." What on Earth is that supposed to mean? "Oh, if I clean the needle before I inject myself with heroine there's no problem." I've seen drivers apply make up, text, eat, drink, drive with their knees, search purses, etc - while driving - almost running me off my lane. Do that around me and I'll throw my helmet @ u
I def dont promote driving and texting but phones have capabilities that if you need to hear a text that bad you could enable it to read it to you automatically and if you have blue tooth theres speak text, all without taking your hands off the wheel, but this video and info is pretty neat
It's even worse to text and drive cuz every phone nowadays is touch screen! I regrettably used to text while driving when I had buttons cuz you can type without having to look at the phone, plus I'm able to hold a conversation while answering a text at the same time (as rude as that sounds) so multi-tasking is generally easy for me. But now that I have a touch screen phone, I would never dream of trying to text while driving!
So instead of just giving people who text a fine, they should put them in jail and suspend their license for 6 months too. I am totally against alcohol as it has many downsides but whereas the person texting could pull to the side of the road text and then continue driving, the person under the influence can only wait until the alcohol leaves their system. My point is these stupid texters should just wait until they get home or just buy a hands free and TALK. What are they impaired of hearing?
My car just got written off by a moron texting while driving,She rear ended me doing 60 kmh, I was waiting to turn left across oncoming traffic. if I had my wheel s pointing into the intersection I'd be dead right now from being pushed into oncoming traffic. I am lucky I walked away but she is a hurting unit right now, no seatbelt wtf? I am so pissed my car is written off what a dumb bitch I hate her.
Take away their drivers license. It's that simple. 'Ma'am, you were texting while you were driving. Out of the vehicle, please. Your car will be towed from here and you will walk to work for the next 6 months. Have a nice day.'
@MrRo330 - yes, a small fine is not enough. There needs to be zero tolerance on this offence. Driving is far more dangerous than most people are aware of.
1.3 million killed and 50 million injured last year. This is projected to increase by 83% by the year 2020. Population control?
i text when i want and use the cell when i want.......now that my car is equipped blue tooth and integrated wifi technology you guys can all just chill. I dont need to use my phone to text anymore or call or receive calls. I can even retrieve my emails while driving, but if my systems were to go down i'm gonna go the old fashion way and revert back to the old school ways. if i run your ass down and make you a cripple, well, thats what insurance is for. I have $5 million liability.
Ii but who uses an iphone while driving, you'll make too much mistakes and end up calling or get fustrated and leave it for later. And driving on an empty strip road isnt the same as driving on a city road.
ok texting while driving is taking it a bit to far but I CAN easily hold my phone,a sigerette use my stickshift AND indicate at the same time. Only thanks to morrons and woman I am not allowed to do this anymore.
well my answer to this problem, is for car manufactures to start putting some kind of transmitter in the vehicle that blocks cellphone use while car is in motion.....let me know if you agreed to this....
that's lame, dude, because the manufacturers have integrated blue tooth and wifi technology into the vehicle which is controled by voice commands. i can retrieve my emails and have them read to me without having to take my eyes off the road. its not illegal to talk while driving is it? dude, you are living in another decade. all these new laws are struggling to keep up with technology....they are 5 years too late.
what kind of douche gab texts looking down and with both hands while driving... let alone texting, that moron should not use a phone... let alone while driving,
I am in complete agreement that texting or or using a phone while driving is not just a bad idea, but irresponsible... However I think this test is a little biased towards showing the serious of texting. "Legally drunk" is hugely different to the states some people drive in... the ones that most of us would consider a "drunk driver"... The ones you see driving home at 20 mph and swaying in the road.
I love when I see cops use their instant messaging software on their laptops, or text on their phones while they drive. I see it all the time. Also, other studies have shown simply having a distraction such as a conversation with a passenger can be just as bad as being impaired. Maybe we should ban that too. People are pathetic, these laws should never even have to be made.
@Fluffster the main argument against text messaging is the fact that you have to take your eyes off the road. when you're driving down some isolated stretch of back country road, sure, it's probably not the end of the world. in an urban environment, every second counts. it's far too easy to hit a pedestrian, motorcyclist, bicyclist, etc.
just like the navigation system doesn't function while a car is moving, text messaging on cell phones should be disabled as well. it would be trivial to require automobile/phone manufacturers to create a system to do this, something based off bluetooth, gps, or a simple radio signal. tampering with the equipment would cause the vehicle to be inoperable.
people who blatantly disregard the law and put all road users at risk have zero respect for human life.
@midnightfapper The whole world doesn't need a "nanny" watching everything they do, It's a sad fact but we've already seen how taking away peoples liberties just cause them to do similar things in more dangerous ways.
@MissingInterval true, the world doesn't need a nanny (i was speaking from a united states centric viewpoint). i lived in méxico city for countless years and people govern themselves accordingly there - wreckless accidents often result in immediate violent consequences, and law enforcement looks the other way.
most americans can't control their finances, the food they put into their mouths, nor responsibly enjoy alcohol. you really want to leave these people to their own devices?
why ppl are doing this while driving if they cant? 4 example I don't have to look in to my mobile to write a text message, so I think its same as smoking while driving. One hand in use, eyes on the road and everyone is happy. P.S. Even passing police car cant see me doing this :D
ugh. i wish people could just follow the rules. texting and driving doesnt only affect the people doing it, it affects others too. i was run over while walking in a pedestrian crosswalk by someone who was texting and driving. that fuckin sucked, that bitch ruined my life.
If cops actively looked and arrested everyone seen talking on a cell phone while driving or texting while driving, the jails wouldn't be able to hold them all. I've seen people txt while driving, talk on the cell while driving, putting on make up while driving, reading a novel while driving, I even seen one person reading a fucking newspaper while driving. There should be a 1 strike rule for "idiotic driving". You get caught and you lose your license. Would make the roads a lot safer.
TALKING TO YOUR PASSENGER AND DRIVING. HOW DANGEROUS IS IT??
Studies have shown that dividing your attention from the road and to your passenger increases the chance for an accident.
How lame! Waking up in the morning and going out increases your chance for an accident. Sheesh!! When people lack innovative thoughts, they want to think of ways to take away your rights.
I´ll keep ignoring the law...if tickets were based on annual salary I would worry. Its only $200.
They are not controlling certain nuisance factors... such as the experience of the drivers and their age,the control factors of same type of cell phone could be confounding on this experiment. They should reconduct the experiment and using Match sampling either Precision Matching or Range matching. With precision both of the subject should be the same age and same driving experience. Also use the same type of phone because we do not know if in fact the independent variables are driving and text
@TChosenwun23 Why can't more people understand the importance of a well conducted experiment? Methodology is the most important factor. This "Experiment" has conclusions that would not pass even a first glance by anyone that knows anything about proper experimental procedures. And look at the way the general populous eats it up. No one can critically think for themselves anymore
1+1=2 people!! It doesn't matter if you THINK you can drive while texting. YOU CAN'T! The only reason why you haven't gotten into an accident is nothing more than luck! Stop being arrogant and start caring about someone else's life but your own. I have almost been hit by these assholes. Watch the news, read about it! Educate yourselves and stop being ignorant. Texting + driving = deaths on the road.
not concentrating while driving is dumb, if you need to be warned to concentrate when driving rather than it being common sense to concentrate, you shouldnt be on the road.
Never had texting service...too expensive even though every person I meet asks me DO YOU TEXT. The closest thing I got to texting is selecting songs on my phone (because my car's stereo is broken) and it is still quite scary.
Okay, I'm 18...and had my first cell phone when I turned 15...and I still don't get the point of texting specially if you're driving...text while in class or text your parents while you're at the strip club...otherwise just call the fucking person...lol I rather drink and drive on this one though...check my vids if you like cars ;)
yeah well i drive one handed always have. The key to talking on a cell phone while driving is always keep your eyes on the road and pay more attention to your surroundings than the phone convo. Texting while driving is easy to do too, if you morons learn how to text while not looking at the keys. I went on a 400 mile trip was texting almost the whole time and never swerved or came close to hitting anything. The key was my eyes never left the road, unlike the idiots in this video.
@pratfu OH MY GOSH I MUST TEXT! I DON'T CARE THAT I'M DRIVING, I CAN'T NOT TALK TO SOMEONE FOR EVEN A SECOND OMG I MUST TEXT, MUST TEXT, CAN'T STOP! I'M SO LAME THAT I CAN'T STOP TEXTING! You know what I think of people who text while driving? I think they're the stupidest idiots ever. IDIOT. That's what you are. DON'T TEXT AND DRIVE! You people are so stupid you're mind can't even grasp the concept that you're endangering the lives of others around you, not just your own, you know. Idiot.
I had a friend that would let go of the steering wheel while it was in motion & he began texting .. & one time i was like HOLY FARKIN JEBUS!! & grabbed the steering wheel... & after that he would tell me hold the steering wheel while he texted... Never got back in an automatic car with him again... Now he owns a Manual transmission car & like not even a month of owning it he was in a small wreck his car it still runs but looks ugly as shite... & now he doesn't text while driving... I THINK :]
2:48 Who the hell could even drive and use a typewriter at the same time? it's like something you'd see in a comedy film, where they do an over-exaggerated gag on texting and driving
It's unfortunate they usually don't learn until it's already too late. I can't believe how people can text in their car. I can't do anything when I'm driving. I mean, sometimes I can't even talk to the person next to me when I'm dirving and say 'hold on.... ok what you wanted to say?' Imagine texting... that's nuts!
As a Seattle car accident lawyer I have sadly seen the incredible damage brought on by people texting while driving far too many times- what is sad is that there are always those that think they are not the problem while they engage in these activities such as witnessed in the comment bellow by delta. I actually started a program Teens Against Distracted Driving.com to try to help spread awareness about the dangerous of texting and driving- I think education is the only way to help combat this
No shit texting while driving was worst than driving impared, i mean common, while you're texting you're ignoring whats infront of you and looking down at your phone, atleast when you're impared you know and you become more alert of whats going on around you, it doesnt matter what it is texting will always come out on top.
A great new application which can be downloaded and installed to your cellphone is now out which helps prevent drivers from being distracted by their cellphone while driving. SMSREPLIER automatically sends an outbound text to any incoming texts or calls that a driver may receive while driving, letting the person know that, "Hey I'm driving, I'll get back to you once I reach my destination." There are default messages that can be sent or a driver may customize what they want the message to say.
I'm surprised nobody in America didn't sue the inventors of SMS yet. Btw. why don't you all just get car headsets and tell your dumb friends to simply call you, instead of MESSAGING their life problems to you.
lol type while driving...but seriously my mates text in the car and i grab it off em and write the text for em...too dangerous if the driver is doing it
also it's really really easy to text so ya of course if your cell is harder to operate then of course don't text. You can actually text and not even look at your cell if your a moderate texter. It's simply not rocket science people!
@delta3303 Your right to text while driving? If people weren't so stupid as to be doing it in the 1st place (and thus, causing accidents and deaths) then the laws would not have been put in place.
@IkilledColMustard well unlike some people I'm paying to drive and paying to talk. No ones paying my bills for me ergo I'm earning my right to use both, unlike a few of my friends who have others paying for both
I knew cell phones were more trouble than their worth since most humans are too stupid to follow the no texting law trust me I've seen many people on the road talking on those things 24/7 unfortunately natural selection is not in play at that point the smart ones always get injured while the air heads still live
@wojtek0000 everyday some stupid monkey like yourself does not see the dangers that cell phone users and texters present and they ignore everything else around them injuring and killing anyone that gets in their way with no regard, if natural selection was at play on the road the phone heads and texters would be the ones that die instead of the people they kill around them.
@wojtek0000 Talk all humans do is talk soon texting while driving wont matter, as soon Apophis hits Earth balance will be restored and humanity becomes extinct.
@mamasboy1231 it seems I'm right humans are the dumbest species in the universe I do have a job but I do not own a cell phone it is an obselete piece of technological trash.
I would think twice about becoming a customer of TbayTel! They do not offer customer support and do not care about their customers once you sign the contract!
The ad "TAC - Mobile (Australia)" shows a woman who hits a pedestrian while texting. The PSA ends with: "So if you're on the phone, get off the road!" This Car and Driver video shows why the TAC - Mobile PSA's message is so relevant here.
This is a very biased video. I'd believe it better if you did show people who are used to texting vs people who just have a phone and do it once in a while. You'd actually be surprised by the results...just saying
@Kaori121@Kaori121 Actually I can drive better drunk than texting, many of my friends who drink say the same thing. I stopped doing both, I use to be one of those teens/young adults who think they can text while driving and was doing it for a good 10 years. Until one day I had a really close call with a big rig and had 3 other passengers with me. I will never be this stupid again and text while driving.
I have committed the sin of reading E-mails several times while driving, but after a couple of low speed near misses NEVER again. It truly is scary how fast it is lose track of the road when you are distracted. This and the recent very graphic PSA video out of the UK only re-affirms it. I might also add that the GPS Navigator on cell phones is equally as dangerous. If you are driving a car, YOUR CONCENTRATION HAS TO BE ON THE ROAD! It takes only 1 second for things to go horrible wrong.
@iturn18nextyear You better pray you don't hit anything or anyone.
People who text have blown through red lights and T-bone another car at 45-55 miles per hour. Lots of times the person getting hit doesn't survive a hit like that.
Parents - there is technology that disables your teens texting ability once the car they are driving goes above 10mph. I have it, and it WORKS! Feel free to contact me if you'd like more information!! God Bless!
this is a bias study i have found that i crash 10.34% less when i AM texting opposed to me not texting. shit study also applies to the average teen/adults who text while driving
Cell phone companies could put a stop to this. Whenever the phone detects that you are traveling at a speed greater than 25mph it should disable calling/texting features. Would that be unfair to people in a train or plane? Yes, but it would save many lives and prevent costly damages. Sounds worth it to me.
@kramnrublaw Why would they do that? They love money, they dont care whether you die or not. As long as you made that payment! Whether you're in the ICU for texting while driving or not!
There was a girl in Brooklyn who hit someone because she was texting and driving. It was about a year ago. I don't remember if he died or just ended up in the hospital. She was Jewish and he wasn't so some were feeling sorry for HER.

Driving is far more dangerous than most people are aware of.

i text when i want and use the cell when i want.......now that my car is equipped blue tooth and integrated wifi technology you guys can all just chill.

Fluffster 1 year ago
@Fluffster the main argument against text messaging is the fact that you have to take your eyes off the road. when you're driving down some isolated stretch of back country road, sure, it's probably not the end of the world. in an urban environment, every second counts. it's far too easy to hit a pedestrian, motorcyclist, bicyclist, etc.

The420Destroyer 1 year ago
just like the navigation system doesn't function while a car is moving, text messaging on cell phones should be disabled as well. it would be trivial to require automobile/phone manufacturers to create a system to do this, something based off bluetooth, gps, or a simple radio signal. tampering with the equipment would cause the vehicle to be inoperable.
people who blatantly disregard the law and put all road users at risk have zero respect for human life.

@midnightfapper The whole world doesn't need a "nanny" watching everything they do, It's a sad fact but we've already seen how taking away peoples liberties just cause them to do similar things in more dangerous ways.
MissingInterval 1 year ago
@MissingInterval true, the world doesn't need a nanny (i was speaking from a united states centric viewpoint). i lived in méxico city for countless years and people govern themselves accordingly there - wreckless accidents often result in immediate violent consequences, and law enforcement looks the other way.

TChosenwun23 1 year ago
They are not controlling certain nuisance factors... such as the experience of the drivers and their age,the control factors of same type of cell phone could be confounding on this experiment. They should reconduct the experiment and using Match sampling either Precision Matching or Range matching. With precision both of the subject should be the same age and same driving experience. Also use the same type of phone because we do not know if in fact the independent variables are driving and text
TChosenwun23 1 year ago 2
@TChosenwun23 Why can't more people understand the importance of a well conducted experiment? Methodology is the most important factor.

Cell phone companies could put a stop to this. Whenever the phone detects that you are traveling at a speed greater than 25mph it should disable calling/texting features. Would that be unfair to people in a train or plane? Yes, but it would save many lives and prevent costly damages. Sounds worth it to me.
