my cat used to do this with a chalk board duster. XD He wouldn't let us go anywhere near him or it, and completely ignored all of his actual toys. Then he would carry the duster around the house and hide it from us. XD

My Siamese cat did the same thing when he was a kitten. As they get older they learn more social skills from their mom or other cats. That's why most adults cats don't growl. Some adult cats do growl because they were taken away from their moms to soon or didn't have adult cats around them to correct their behaviour.

You need to show them you are the boss when they are young like that. It's cute now, but could lead to aggressive bites later on. Don't hit them hard enough to hurt, but just a light swat like mama kitty would do, or even hissing works if you don't want to "strike" them.
