  • Nice

  • Amen.

  • Nice song :)

  • this is a cover song Dave does...

  • @lilmrssquirt cover? im pretty sure he wrote this...

  • I love Dave Matthews so much .. beautiful song, DMB is such an inspiration and a pleasure to listen to all the time

  • It's amazing that an Atheist can write a better song about Jesus Christ than a Christian...

  • @rainbowalligator1 he's agnostic

  • @rainbowalligator1 Hate to be a prick, but Dave is an agnostic. Its not so much that he doesn't believe in God, but that he doesn't dig organized religion. Dave I believe to be spiritual but he is still putting the pieces of his soul back together after the death of his sister.

  • I have post my own Christmas song/video!!

    For all mankind!!

    youtube: TheNewageworldmusic

  • The extreme serenity that is attached with this song is the reason I listen to it all year round and not just Christmas time

  • all soul searchers...

  • Amazing

  • @ironbrd9 so what is your pillow? insulting people on youtube to feel superior?

  • @ironbrd9 Don't take anything away from people, it's wrong and I hate it when people try to take religion away from others. I would technically say that I am agnostic because though half the time I believe in god, I sometimes question it, but I will never take that away from someone else. Some people do enjoy a life of religion. Just because you don't, don't judge them.

  • 'instead I fear I've spilled, the blood of our children all around' I suspect Jesus was referring to Herods Massacre of the Innocents, and Matthews is noting how great love is often attended by great sorrow.

  • This song kicks ass. I am not so sure about its eschatological significance. If you need such support to like a song, I pity you.

  • We are blessed to have such masterful storytellers among us who not only use words, but song to immortalize truth. Every emotion I have ever felt about the story of Christ, Dave Matthews manages to convey through his song. That is why it makes me cry when I hear it.

  • This song is so beautiful. I'm a grown man and it makes me cry half the time, definitely in my top 3 DMB songs.

  • @wctwctwctwct Me too.

  • App state concert sweet!

  • Geez, I forgot how much I love Dave Matthews

  • Unless ur in a time machine reading over he authors' shoulders, we're all reading modified versions.

  • I have always thought this song to be one of the most beautiful summaries of Christ's message I've ever encountered. It's not about reading minutia between the lines--the message of the song is that Jesus tried to teach us LOVE.

  • i adore this man <3

  • Wow. Reading a bit much into this song, folks.

When Christ's philosophy came to conflict with his people, the third desert religion was essentially born, uttering forth an era where three desert religions ensure that peace will never reign on this earth.

The children who fight and die.....children meaning all human beings.....like in Irag, Afghanistan, etc. etc. etc......In the song, Christ desires that wine is taken in remembrance of the children whose blood was spilled before peace came.

  • Ah, Dave and Tim, you will find yourselves in my sermon this Sunday. Shower him with love indeed...love, love, love, was all around.

  • @dpthomas37 thanks for reccomending him. he is pretty sweet!! also im glad to see another christian, besides myself, that likes dave lol.

  • Merry Christmas.

  • Is Dave Matthews religious or just subtle to the point of gutlessness?

  • Dave is a self-proclaimed agnostic. This does not mean he has, or should have, a problem with Jesus or his message of morality. Gutlessness would be out of hand dismissing anything Christianity has to offer just because you don't believe in it's or any other God.

  • @PDeck2Deck Nice try, Dave isn't talking about an appreciation for early middle-eastern figures... he's singing about a religious figure in religious terms. Why? because it sells!

P.s. "Turn the other cheek" is nice, I certainly appreciate that and a few other jewels, but I think you fail to appreciate this: "If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned."

  • I took the time to look up agnostic. Interesting stuff. I read it while listening to Dave sing about the birth of our savior, and his death on a tree, all out of love for you and me. Nuff said about this. Lets just enjoy a very positive song about a very positive time. When our Lord Jesus Christ died ,so I don't have to worry about eternity in hell.

  • Dave is in the trenches speaking of our Lord Jesus Chris to all who will listen. The song Bartender is even witnessing to your heart. The bartender he refers to is God.

This beautiful song speaks of the life of Christ from birth to death. This is Dave's response to going into all the world and preaching the gospel.

  • @MrNbittle Hahaha dude. Dave is an agnostic, if not athiest. For proof, google it.

  • @NateSchutte Google isn't proof for everything. I know Dave isn't religious but I don't think that means he can't be inspired by a story

  • This song is super chilll...and amazing.

  • <<<<<<<google it

  • why does have to be religious........just enjoy people

  • lyrical genius

  • Thanks so much for sharing this video. This song is my D & T song favorite of the week! Soooooo good!

  • Thanks so much for sharing this video. This song is my D & T song favorite of the week! Soooooo good!

  • Thinking about my grandparents listening to this song. How can one be sad when Dave Matthews sings?!

  • is he religious? i had no idea till this song.

  • i think when he says 'ive come to shed a little light on the darkening see (the wars of time) he actullay STARTED the wars.(blood of our children all around)

  • in my opinion, this is the most beautiful of dave's songs

i especially appreciate tims work in this song on the vegas album

  • Dave is the man. awesome song, the message can be heard so many ways, but its obvious what its all about. i like the comment "im obsessed now" lol thats what happened to me! and i would say go to a live show and he will steal your heart! this was no where near one of my first dave favs but when i heard this, he won me over!

  • you dont have to be religious in any way to enjoy such a well done song. go dave go

  • @4v4l4ncha

    i agree =D

  • this looks so intimate

    i am jealous

    loveeee dave

  • Thank you for sharing this song. I love it! Jesus saves!

  • He may have loved us all from the beginning.......however, He came to sacrifice Himself and if we don't recognize that then we will never reap the benefits!

  • LOVE this song. Listened to it on pandora and now stuck in my head

  • it's actually called "Christmas Song," but yeah

  • The name of the song is "The Christmas Story" read the bible if you dont understand the song....Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

  • the bible was written by men.. we (humans) created the idea of a God

  • That about sums it up.

  • @vic4562 and you sir are going to hell LOLLOLOLOLOOLLOOLLOL

  • @BelgiumUNRep Why do You say stuff like that? Doesnt the Bible teach you to love your enemies and pray for those who dont have Christ in their hearts? Doesnt this song, and better yet, the bible tells us about love??

  • @vic4562 Ok, I disagree, but however, I respect you...even if that was true, dont you think the world needs Love? Thats what the song is about, and it is based upon what the Bilble says...and that is a Love Message

  • amazing song. what does dave mean at the end of the song when he says "father up above, why in all this hatred do you fill me up with love?"

  • In a crazy mixed up hateful world why does God keep him happy and loving.

  • He's talking about God. Loving everyone even in all these times of anger and hatred. Awesome song

  • @breakinbridge10 I means that when Jesus was at the cross suffering because of man hatred, he was still loving them....Jesus died for our sins, and because he loved us and still does!

  • Dave is King.

  • Best summary ever!

  • thanks for posting this. Dave and Tim are amazing!

  • "She was his girl, he was her boyfriend." This line blows me away. When has anyone, in 2000 years, ever thought of referring to Mary and Joseph this way? Brilliant song.

  • @CartoonMuhammed Nah those lyrics are more than average

  • what a tune, really takes you back if you listen to any of the lyrics of any of his songs!

  • beautiful.. nuff said

  • Perfect song. This man's voice is RIDICULOUS!!! I wonder what his beliefs are.

  • its tough to say, i think he did this song out of joy for season and the warm heartedness of the story of christmas more than anything because if you listen to the new album there are a lot of references godlessness and evolution.

  • @ozzian2000 hes previously stated that he's agnostic, though i think from listening to this and other songs, he believes that jesus was a real person with great ideas

  • This song has helped me spiritually so often. it's been pivotal in shaping my spiritual self. I cannot overestimate it's value and worth. Thanks for posting it.

  • tim reynolds is itty bitty!

  • seems like a good prospective thanks.

  • yes that helps. im a christian and im a huge dmb fan and i love this song its just i was wondering what the lyrics "spilt the blood of our children all around". i knew it was the story of jesus its just im not sure what those lyrics mean

  • Well there are two different versions of this lyric. In the first, "I fear I spill the blood of my children all around" I think Dave is referring to the irony of how Jesus shed his blood for us but his children go to war over religion and spill each others blood.

I think the second "And the blood of our children all around" is simply referring to Christ dying for all humanity and the blood of Christ was the blood of everyone he died for. But that's just my perspective though.

  • I think he could be referring to the Slaughter of the Innocents or Massacre of the Innocents. King Herod, when hearing of Jesus' pending birth, had all of the young male children in the little town of Bethlehem killed. Just a thought...

  • Oh that's a good point as well. I hadn't thought of that. Thanks!

  • @johnbost29 that's exactly what it is.

  • @fansofbands if you listen to the line fully "When Jesus Christ was nailed to his tree, said Oh daddy-o I can see how awesome it wil be.I came to shed a little light around, but I think I may have spilt the blood of our children all around" I think what he is talking about is how he came here do some good, but fears he may have done more harm then good.Jews,Christians and Muslims all believe in the same God, somewhere along the way we forgot that and so we are the children he is speaking of.

  • @fansofbands The way I interpret that is that Jesus came to essentially save humanity, but in doing so, he cause so many problems. Often times people will use their Christianity to try to justify doing bad things. That's just what I get from this (beautiful) song.

  • @fliphkd4293 i agree but jesus caused problems for a good reason. since he was the son of god he had to be different from this world and by doing that ppl hated him. but he died on the cross for humanity. so in the end, his "rebelious" ways against the world was a good thing because he saved the lives of billions of ppl. and still continues to this day :). i would recomend the song given to fly by pearl jam. its about jesus and is amazing!!!

  • @fansofbands

Also likely is that he referred to the bloodshed that was caused in general by his arrival, and the beliefs he tried to spread. Even today those beliefs have been abused as an excuse for war and rape. 2000 years of misinterpreted intentions which have spawned the biggest criminal organization to date and have caused more deaths and wars than the two world wars. I am referring of course to the catholic church.

  • @Decibert i understand but im not catholic and i dont recommend it. i recommend to read and live by what the real bible says. not some modifyied version the catholics use. they give christians a bad name!

  • @Decibert Blaming the Catholic Church for the Crusades is like blaming Obama for the Trail of Tears. Don't be an idiot.

  • does anyone know what this song means

  • In the 1st verse, Dave speaks of Mary and Joseph ("he was his girl, she was his boyfriend") the parents of Jesus Christ and the 3 wise men that visited him ("wise men came, 3 made their way"). The rest of the song talks about Jesus' life, those he knew ("drinkers/jokers"), the sacrament of communion ("eat this bread...drink this wine"), his trial ("for his deviations taken into custody"), death, and the love he showed the world ("fill me up with love"). Hope that helps

  • You fixed the sound! This is a much better version than the one that's getting all the hits. Thank you!

  • i think i am obsessed now...someone please show me something better because i truly do not believe that there is possibly anything better than dave matthews he is absolutely amazing

  • there is nothing better. Dave is the man. I would recommend the live trax cds, they are truly amazing

  • @mishashouse1114 check out elliot smith

  • this song & i will go to the grave together, i will never forget it.

  • Oh my GOD! I was there at this concert... it was spring and all we brought were flip flops and tee-shirts and it snowed like six inches the night of the show. What an amazing concert! Dave is the best when its him-- stripped back singing and strumming the six string. Thanks for the post.

  • great song. awesome quality!
