  • you know dude, i recently played this song in my school... it was so awesome a great performance everybody loved, it was the first time in a live performance and i did it just great,

so i just came to thank you man cause thanks to you i could play that song so well, i own you one man thanks a lot

  • really appreciate you getting back in touch and i'm very happy your performance went great!! I wish you many more an all the best with your music...your friend, dale.

  • Tnx man, just what i needed.

    Love your vids.

  • really appreciate you checking them out....all the best with your music!

    dale

  • took me a while to realize grips were the same thing as chords

  • yes sorta...to me a chord is collection of certain notes that can be played at various spots on the fretboard - a grip is a specific fingering for whatever chord you are playing - more than you wanted to hear i'm sure:) Most of all thanks for watching and keep pickin!

  • Thanks!!! I play this EVERYTIME I pick up my guitar, thanks to you! Rock on :)

  • great to hear!!! Keep on pickin and thanks for sharing music....dale.

  • Brilliant video! By far the best on YouTube for this song. Explained perfectly!

  • thanks so much for checking this out & your kind post is greatly appreciated!

  • Great lesson, thanks!

  • sure appreciate you checking this out and all the best with your music!!

    dale

  • one of the best teachers i've ever seen...very cool

  • thanks for your kind post and i really appreciate you checking this out....all the best with your music!

    dale

  • Hi, at the end of the intro where you go into the transition, do you play the full picking pattern of the Am before going to the transition or does in come in early? Thanks

  • no, it's an abbreviated pattern there - it's three single note strokes and then two strokes of the B & E string being played together then your into the verse. All the best with your music,

    dale

  • Really well explained and demonstrated! Great video for learning Travis type picking which i came across recently!

  • thanks for giving your time to check this out and your kind post is greatly appreciated....all the best with your music!

    dale

  • Hi, Thanks for your instruction, I have a question, With the picking pattern, I hear a structure of 1-2and3and4. with' 4' being the E note on the D string. On the orig. recording, I hear 1-2and3and4and. With 'and' being the open G string. Giving the pattern sequence an added note. Am I hearing something wrong? Thanks again.

  • great question....you are not hearing anything wrong and don't believe....i play this using a six stroke pattern and a lot of folks like to use the seven stroke pattern you described...adding the G string as the seventh stroke. I can play it both ways but just prefer to leave out the seventh stroke - i just like the way it 'breaths' without the last stroke. I think best case is to be able to do both and then each player can decide their preference.

    keep pickin,

    dale

  • Thanks for the reply Dale.

  • hope it made sense...if not just shoot me a private message....keep pickin!

  • thanks a lot dale, I finally got to know how to play this song, appreciate your way of teaching,. can u pls. make a tutorial of the song RIGHT HERE WAITING BY RICHARD MARX... Glad to hear from you.. God bless.

  • i do like that song! I'll sure give it a good listen....thanks for your kind post - keep pickin!

    dale

  • at of all the videos of how to play this song yours is the best

  • really appreciate the kind post....thanks for watching and all the best with your music!!

    dale

  • this is a fantastic video but im confused with the alternate pickings! ive got the main picking of the inside strings and ive got the picking with the high E change but im lost with the low E picking with the 2 note G chord. and could you specify when you use the alternate picking? an example is do you use the alt. picking in the intro for A min or is that just for the verse? thank you!

  • if i understand your question correctly...no you don't have to get off the 'inside 4' strings duing the into...just verses. All the best with your music,

    dale

  • thx! u make me remeber how to play that song :D!

  • i sure appreciate you checking out the video....all the best with your music!

    dale

  • Hey Dale.

Just wanted to let you know That you also have student from Estonia. It's all good just we people not from english countries need to have spoken little slower if you don't mind.Or am i just little to much of a beginner

  • i talk fast....great suggestion and all the best with your music!

    dale

  • @MrKawz1000

This is un-related to Dale's video. I was thinking of visiting Estonia for a few months next year to study on Erasmus, do many people in your country speak English? Is it expensive to live? Do you have many mountains and forests? Anything else you can tell me about your country, I am very interested, thanks!

  • Do you have the music notes and tabs? If you do will you please let me know where I can buy one. Thank you very mcuh.

    Linor34b@yahoo.com

  • i'm sorry i can't provide tab.....all the best with your music!

    dale

  • @Linor34b1 ultimate guitar tabs dot com has a good tab of this song.

  • sorry i do not...

  • I got toask is this tab correct?

    tabs ultimate-guitar com/k/kansas/dust_in_the_wind_tab.htm

ust remove the spaces. In that tab the last note is a open g but you say the last note is the D string. So is the tab wrong and do you see anything else that's wrong with it?

    Thanks! Great tutorial!

  • great question....a lot of players do like to hit the open G string as the 'last stroke' in the pattern. I prefer not to because i like the 'space' it gives without - i think it's 'best case' to be able to do both, and then you as a player decide your preference....i doubt any non-guitar playing listener can hear the difference. Thanks for your kind post and all the best with your music!

    dale

  • can anyone explain to me how to do a d over f sharp?

  • E`X

    Congratulations!!!!!!!!!

  • thanks for your kind post and all the best with your music!

    dale

  • HAHAH G STRING! just kidding..

  • this video was soooooooooooooooooo helpful best lesson on youtube by far and i learned this entire song in about an hour thanks to you and i didnt even have to read any tabs thanks man!

  • sure appreciate you checking it out and thanks for the kind post....all the best with your music!

    dale

  • hahaha, @tonedr your video is the "pick" of the litter... :D //awesome

  • thanks for watching...all the best with your music!

    dale

  • I've been finger picking for years, but I just don't pick up my guitar very often. Watching your lesson on dust in the wind has inspired me to pick it up again. I like your style and pace. I think I would like to practice a while, get back up to speed and contact you about about some one on one. Nicely done!

  • you've made my day with your kind post...i hope you enjoy you music more than ever and it's a source of fun and relaxation in a very busy world. Please know if i can ever be of any help i'm more than glad to try!

    your friend,

    dale

  • Helped a lot but I'm a little lost on the chords played and in what order.

  • you might watch the video where i play it from beginning to end....shoot me a PM if i can help.

    dale

  • Really good lesson. And it really helped haha You play redicilously awesome!! :DD

  • thanks for your kind post and i appreciate you checking out the vid....all the best with your music!

    dale

  • @tonedr Is it any problem if I play the a string with my thumb, the d string with my index, g string with my middle, and the b string with my fourth finger? Will I be just as effective travis picking this way?

  • if it feels better for you i guess it could work...every player adapts a bit differently but as a general rule i play the G string with my index finger. All the best with your music,

    dale

  • @tonedr A family member taught me to travis pick in the way I described but everyone on youtube is playing as you describe. I haven't seemed to be getting any faster "my" way so maybe I should pick it the right way. This just sucks because I feel the last few months have been a waste AND now I have to recondition my brain. I know this is a hard question, but given that do you think I should go ahead and recondition my brain to correct way?

  • i would look at your time invested as a learning experance and moving your toward your goal...yes i would try to change your technique - it will be hard for awhile but you will get it!!! I think you will be glad looking at the big picture you did. Most of us guitar players have some bad habit we have had to work on - but it makes us better players in the end - keep pickin!!!

  • @tonedr Thanks! I appreciate your time

  • Dale, this is an incredible video !!! A great rendition by u and I learned the song easily coz of this :) Would u please make a video of "Jessica" by the Allman Brothers ? It's a song I want to learn since a long time ... Please keep up the good work and hoping to see more of your videos soon :)

    dale

  • most important question in this lesson is .... WHO GET TO THE ROOM IN 7.00 ???

  • thanks for watching!

  • @tonedr I have guitar tuned perfectly, yet when I play the guitar the chords don't sound like "Dust In The Wind", I was wondering if I had to tune it a certain way. Any tips would be helpful also! I just recently bought a guitar & want to learn this song so badly! Thanks!!!

  • DITW is in standard tuning - EADGBE low to high. Perhaps check your tuning again....if you are in tune maybe give your chord fingerings a real close look. I wish you all the best with this great tune and your music,

    dale

  • Thank you for the excellent lesson

  • Thanks for posting this tutorial, well done.

    peace,

    dale

  • man that was perfect i learned it after sitting down for about an hour or so

    I LOVE YOU!

  • great to hear you worked it up - all the best with your music!

    dale

  • That's a very well structured and well explained tutorial. I like how you break down the picking pattern and fretting seperately. I had the chord progressions down to a tee earlier but watching this vid helped me realize that my picking pattern was completely wrong. Now it sounds much more rich when I play it. Very good tutorial

  • thanks for the kind feedback....greatly appreciated and i wish you all the best with your music!

    dale

  • Very nice.

  • thanks for checking it out & the kind post is greatly appreciated!

    dale

  • dust in the wind, at the beginning of the vid to the right :]

  • that's hilarious.....I noticed that awhile back & your the 1st one to mention it! Thanks for watching,

    dale

  • are your online tutorials are free?

  • yes

  • Well done Brother! I have the tabs but the timing HAS to be taught. great vid!

  • really appreciate the post......all the best with your music!

  • A+B, D, G, A, B, D, G

  • thanks for watching!

  • @tonedr Oh sorry...That was more of a personal note for me. I loved the vid though. It was very clear and easy to follow.

  • Nice lesson man. I like that encourage people to take it slow.,

  • thanks for watching and i appreciate the kind post.....all the best with your music!

    dale

  • sir, will you pls make a finger picking guitar tutorial of hotel california.. i will really apreciate it if you do that,,, i really love that song so pls help me..... by the way,,,, i love the way you teach this song THANK YOU!!!!!

  • Thanks so much for the kind words & request - great tune!!

    keep pickin,

    dale

  • This song gives me the most problem as a mediocre player lol,, i get so frustrated at that pick pattern.. I have played harder stuff like Zep's babe i,m gonna leave you with not have as much difficulty. This song just drives me crazy for some reason.. Guess I,ll keep trying!! lol

  • it seems like it just doesn't make sense until it just sort of 'clicks' or comes together and you can feel the grove of it.....i understand your feelings! Just practice very slow until you get the sequence down, then slowly speed up. All the best with your playing,

    dale

  • @tonedr I've been playing rhythm for the past year or so. I have made this my first song to pick. Can you give my a rough idea how many hours of practice time I will need to pick this song the speed that is required to play it properly? (Also I am not having any problems with the chord changes)

  • that's a great question but a hard one to give an answer to that is close to accurate....i'm going to say i spent an hour a day for a week or so getting the pattern down - then a few weeks with that chord changes and fingerpicking all together. I hope that helps some....keep picking!!

  • @tonedr Appreciate it!

  • @tonedr i have some difficulties with the left-hand grips, especially during the chorus and bridge. Could you maybe post the exact left hand finger positions for the chords that are used in those parts of the song?

Besides that, great vid! Keep up the good work and maybe post some more.

  • thank you so much!

  • I appreciate you watching - all the best with your music!

    dale

  • You are really amazing! I on the other hand suck at playing the guitar :P I started 4 months ago. Im a newbieeeee. I hope I'll manage to play that song someday xD

  • You will play it!!! Just keep at it & try to play a little every day if you can & take it slow and once you get a part mastered move on. Just takes time but you'll get there!

  • @tonedr I hope so! I'm just keep confusing my fingers lol! I mean which string i hit first!

But I think im doing some progress...! =P

  • seriously let me know if I can help!

  • @tonedr I'll let you know! Thanks!

  • @tonedr Blessed assurance AND encouragement. What more can I ask from a cool mentor. :)

  • you are kind - thanks for sharing.music with me!

  • beautiful guitar

  • thanks so much for watching.....all the best!

    dale

  • I've got the basic pattern down, and the chord shapes are super easy, but somewhere in the beginning while showing the picking, you lost me. Where you start out slow, it's fine-- but when you go to the actual tempo, it's like an entirely different rythem, to me. It doesn't seem like gradually getting faster/smoother its just different.. I need help :/

  • I think what you need is to stay with it - it will come eventually - it seems like nonsense until your fingers just become automatic & then you can feel the rhythm. Takes awile just hang in there!!

  • Thanks for these tutorials man. You give by far some of the best tutorials on Youtube. So far you have helped me learn Dust in the Wind and Black Water in no time and I now have a knack for finger picking.

  • well that makes it all worthwhile! Appreciate the kind words & thanks for using the videos - all the best with your music!

    dale

  • Excellent instruction and Thank You for taking time to make the video.

  • thanks for the kind words & all the best with your music!

  • Good explanation of fingerpicking. First time I have been able to make it sound right. Thank You!

  • greatly appreciate the kind post - all the best with your music!

  • wats ur name so i can look u up on skype

  • That would be great - I'll shoot it to you.

  • Great video, I might just see if I can learn it at last.

I too have never heard the word 'grip' used in this context. Is it a word only you use or is it a common expression down your way?

  • i guess i have stolen it from somewhere.....i just think it communicates well in talking to students. Thanks so much for the kind words and giving your time to check it out - all the best with your music,

    dale

  • thumbs up if you saw the dusty thing fall down!

  • thanks for watching!

  • I think its great that you have done a cover but also an Instructional video. Very good of you. Cheers

  • thanks for your kind post....greatly appreciated and all the best with your music!

  • this is Kansas....and i can't imagine loging in with your YT name!!! Thanks for watching,

    dale

  • YES!!! the lead into the verse AND the verse!! thank you thank you!!! lol I'm so sick of playing just the intro..: )

  • haha....hope you enjoy working it up!!

  • Are the chords in the intro in order?

  • indeed they are - thanks for watching!

  • Thanks for this lesson, your vid is the best for this song in my opinion! perfect and clear :)

This song is also my first fingerpicking song.. do you have some suggestions for other good fingerpicking songs to practice? atm i practice this and Eddie Vedder's Tuolumne...

    Greetings from the Netherlands

  • thanks so much for your kind words and taking your time to check out the video....my next suggestion might be to consider Blackbird - a great song to add to a fingerstyle vocabulary. I wish you all the best with your music,

    dale

  • this is the first time I've heard the term "grip".... Anyway, thanks for the lesson. That helped. I couldn't make sense of the tab book I bought.
