About this tenor,I heard him in Walkure ( very well) in Lohengrin ( well) in Carmen and in Werther (not so bad). As he is without any technical, he will sing badly - 1,2 years- also Wagner and Bizet. His Cavaradossi is absurd, like his Florestan, like his Ferrando and so on.
So jealous!!!! (but also happy a real tenor/artist/man has arrived to compete with the fake "popera" stars) He has everything!!! I wish I had half the talent, looks, voice and career this mega artist has. Oh well, I guess that is why I am now a real estate agent instead of an operatic tenor like I used to be! lol Best of luck to Mr. Kaufmann in his continuing career!
Nice stage acting, good looking, powefull voice, but hard to control, as we can hear at 1:03 out of tone... one cannot say the orchestra isn't supportive... it's not the first time I notice his struggle to keep the pitch. Maybe less punch and more tenderness could help him... maybe... for this aria asks for romance, remembrance and some charming notes...
I love Kaufmann's voice, he's my favorite spinto tenor to listen to. But why do all tenors that sing verismo think it necessary to add so much portamento? It's almost like they grace note/ slide up to each note.
There are so few tenors with true "baritonal" quality in their sound these days that many who hear Kaufmann now think this is a bad thing! Ha ha! ALL the great tenors of the past had this sound! He is a great vocalist, as well as a great artist, and this..coupled with movie star looks! What more could anyone want? But some now believe that a "tenor" voice must be nasal, tight and thin in order to quality as a tenor. This is the world we live in today. Boys...not men...like Kaufmann.
We better hope that his technique is secure and that his voice continues to develop because he is about the only young tenor today who even suggests that he has the possibility of being a legitimate successor to the authentic operatic tenors of the past.
I was enjoing the somewhat langorous intro, so I was rather suprised to find it contrasted with what struck me as a rather stiff rendition of the vocal. He is very good, but I feel the voice must flow more freely to realize his potential.
@promopera Tipical of those who have no idea what singing is about, and how we're taught to sing certain vowels, specially in a foreign language. Carry on.
@waltersoto777 Most tenors do sing 'armoniAAA' so it's a valid remark to make. Instead of just dissing the commenter, why don't you explain your argument? Anyway, I have more problems with the fact that his notes sounds a little flat in his middle range most of the time, in my opinion due to his darkening of his voice, or very flat at for example "di veeeerse". I really need to hear him live, for know he doesn't really move me.
@montallio Yes I have to agree. He is leaving us a number of very poor live recordings in the past few years. Sadly it IS tech issues. He is gifted with a marvelous instrument, is handsome, a fine actor, very musical and does not distort the melodic line as do so many other tenors but the voice has lost its "ring/ping" of just a few years ago and yes, he now has pitch issues. I do hope he gets help before it is too late.
For all his fine voice and deserved stature among today's tenors, Kaufmann hasn't resolved the fundamental tenorial problem of the passaggio. Sometimes he sings it too open, other times too covered. He'll never achieve his full potential until he works this out ---
@stevevandien The technical problem also encompasses resonance. Sometimes Kaufmann has it. Sometimes he doesn't to any significant extent.
He does not have a CONSISTENT technique, reliable throughout his range.
Kaufmann can still develop that, given a good teacher. But he's making so much money without it that perhaps he shall deem doing so unnecessary. More's the pity.
Bedove, I suppose u can do it better...that's wat I thought! So be hush!

It would be a great job undersing him as Sacrestano:-)
But a great work, nice man and sings very fine as ever. I think he's the best in the second decade. Would be anyone to brave make him sing faster?:-)

In my time, we called this voices: swallowed. And his musical taste is affected.
To be the "best tenor" he has a couple of things to learn.
But, he is a good, only a good, tenor, which is a lot. But to compare him with tenors like Kraus, is pretentious and ridiculous.

This was not his best performance of this and the ending was somewhat egregious.
A singer with his musicality and naturally beautiful tone doesn't need to do tricks.
