No one here gets it, every state has their own regulations as to what color designations belong to different agencies. I am a volunteer firefighter in NY, here we are allowed to run blue warning lights, EMT's use green, and police use red. Other states are different, or similar- according to their laws.
Quick question everybody: Where can you find green LED bicycle lights (the battery-powered kind) and are GREEN lights legal? I have a pair of green Lifegear glowsticks on each side of my bike and no cop who saw that cares.
i am a volunteer fire fighter and i got a mini phantom max plus for my bicycle. me and my friend spent hours on finding a battery that is light and is almost equivalent to a car battery. but i had to get a permeant for the light even though its a bike. i live in NJ btw.
California law: "[section] 21201.3. (b) No person shall display a steady or flashing blue warning light on a bicycle or motorized bicycle except as authorized under subdivision (a)" [which is about peace officers]
@otterboxiphone A white light is required on the front by section 21201. Although it specifies reflector colors also, it does not appear to expressly forbid other colors of lights besides blue. Non-standard colors can be confusing and possibly dangerous though, like someone coming toward you with a red light on the front since you may not initially realize that your closing speed is as high as it is.

not legal...Only colors allowed are, dark reds (like regular car lights) and standard yellow, i saw a guy today, driving with BLUE LED blinkers, as soon as he put them on and turned the corner he got pulled over, at first when his blinker went off, i though he was a cop, or emergency response, i geuss thats why they dont allow it because often these lights are only used by government vehicles
>12345678922265 : Easy solution is to buy simple white LED lights and some transparent blue modelling paint. Apply some paint to the inside of the transparent cover. This'll produce the desired effect for around £10.
I run 2 blue single-led headlights (based on the Smart LS026 set), and the police tolerate it as long as I don't let them flash. At night people recognise my bike even when it's about 1000ft away. Guess that should suffice for your purposes.
the light looks great, it's a good idea to swap the LED's for blue ones! I see most of the comments are quoting 'rules and regulations' for road use, but there's nothing stopping anyone fitting them and only using them on mountain bikes for off-road use :)
You can however attach any colour light to your person as they are not permanently attached to the cycle which is my interpretation of the RTAct road lighting regs
A lot of the flashing bicycle lights have a slightly blue tint. They're not blue enough to be illegal but sometimes cyclists with those bikes are confused as emergency vehicles. Occasionally cars will pull over to let you past especially when it's dark and they can only see a flashing blue light in the rear mirror. It's happened to me and it's a bit embarassing.
They're still technically 'white' LEDs. If you look at the emission spectrum [see manufacturer's website], most white LEDs have a peak in the blue region. As I understand it, this is because MOST white LEDs are blue LEDs whith a yellow phosphor. The result is a whiteish light with a bluish cast. There are different colour whites white [bluish], warm [yellowish], and daylight [slightly blue]. The phosphor differs between the type of 'white'.
The chances are that if you are selling these to as road bicycle lights in the UK (as a business) then eBay may close your account and you may have some awkward questions to answer with the authorities and trading standards!
Flashing lights are around fout to six times as attention grabbing as steady lights of the same brightness. Flashing lights use less electricity, therefore battery life is extended. The downside is that purely flashing lights are hard to pin-point for position estimation purposes. So the best combination is flashing [where legal] to draw attention to you, together with steady lights, so that drivers can determine exactly where you are.
Drunk drivers are apparently drawn to flashing lights.
I personally think they would look much nicer than common white lights, but the law is pretty anal about using blue lights on non-emergency vehicles, at least around here.
I would imagine that is because we have had a few cases of people impersonating police vehicles & trying to flag down females driving at night ?

Same here in the states, as blue lights are only legal on emergency vehicles, & why would anyone want flashing lights on a bycicle anyways ?

Not ying to dazzle, just be seen at night, lol

Blue flashing lights are illegal on any road vehicle in the UK, unless on an officially recognised emergency vehicle.
See: Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations 1989 (amended in 1994 and 2005)

the cops are not going to like that. thet don't like it when people have lights that look like emergency lights, especially cop lights.
