Michael Ontkean went on to star in Twin Peaks and a long string of TV movies in the early 90's. Notable co-stars were Valerie Bertinelli and JoBeth Williams. He tried-unsuccessfully-to stop clips from "Making Love" to be showcased in the documentary "The Celluloid Closet". The documentary highlighted portrayals of gay roles on film from the 20's - early 90's. Not sure why he would want the film to be excluded but it certainly indicates he had become uncomfortable with the film.
As a teenager at the time this film was released, it was the first time I saw a semi-positive commerically released movie about gay men. It's had a lasting impression on me. I viewed this film again recently and I had no idea how much it affected the man I became. The title song and the clip above cemented something in me that I cherish and abhor within myself. I've become both characters. I've always wanted a lasting relationship but find myself incapable allowing it to happen. THX 4 clip
This is an excellent movie, just watched it at home. When this movie came out I was only 16 yrs old, excellent acting from the 80's acting you don't see anymore unless it's an older movie from the 70's or 80's or even older. Great performace by all the actors - Keep making movies like this one. The Robeta Flack song at the end of the movies is awesome, loved it.
The final scene in this film between Ontkean and Jackson makes the final scene in "The Way We Were" between Redford and Streisand look like a laugh riot. Incredibly touching and a powerful insight into how homophobia injures both straight as well as gay human beings.
THEY WERE VERY BRAVE TO EVEN CONSIDER, LET ALONE PLAY IT... MAKING LOVE... 1982. MANY SAY WAS NOT AN ACCURATE ACCOUNT OF "WHAT IT MEANT TO COME OUT" I AGREE.

one of the truly great gay themed films and the first firm in which a gay man isn't killed, kills or commits suicide. this movie not only moved me but opened a closet for me. to date i still recall this tender love scene. thank you michael ontkean and harry hamlin for taking a brave step into uncharted movie history. "now I'm feeling strong enough...neither one of us is breaking...there's more to love than making love..I'll remember you and making love and I'll remember you, thank you, roberta
Great movie and it really helped so much for gay rights by helping many men come to their senses and admit they are gay which is nothing to be ashamed of but proud.Great memories and will be watching this tonight :D
@musiclover77able You're a psycho because you are using "GOD" to validate YOUR own hate. Newsflash: God hates HATERS like YOU so I'll see you in hell sistah! LOL
I just saw this years ago, and I cried because I had no idea a movie was done this tastefully about homosexuality and coming out, I really felt for Ontkean and Kate Jackson's characters; I could never be w/a married man especially after watching this. Hamlin's character came across as a scared, almost unfeeling heel to me though.
this was a big step forward for homosexuals and one must remember we still had the onslaught of the aids epeidemic and the public backlash ahead of us.
It was hard for audiences to accept: 1. A mainstream gay movie in 1982. 2. Michael Ontkean from 'The Rookies', Kate Jackson from 'Charlie's Angels' and Harry Hamlin from 'Clash of the Titans' in a three way love triangle (between Ontkean and Hamlin),..3. Not showing it in a negative or degrading light (think 'Crusing' and 'Partners')..Hollywood went out on a limb..and unfortunately it didn't make it past the top of the tree...well done movie..i think more appreciated now than it was then..
these were very daring roles for actors to do in those times, you usually had to assume what was going on cause they never showed kisses or anything, they would just say their gay and thats it, thats the most graphic gay scene i've ever seen from that time, so kudos to the actors
this was the first "gay" movie I ever saw. I remember turning the volume down way low so the downstairs neighbors wouldn't be able to hear what I was watching. It was the most powerful movie I had ever seen. True, it was tinted with a sense of homophobia, but, that was the norm at the time. Internalized homophobia was how we lived. So glad to see this on here, I watched the movie countless times.
@knottbros Yes I also saw this movie on tv and felt a surge of deep electricity when they both kissed each other! it was 3 times as intence as a man kissing a woman.
The forbidden taboos were so strong back then regarding homosexuality): but this seems to have lost allot of voltage by todays standards, yet its still so beautiful to see.
Michael Ontkean is so hot in this movie...too bad that he distanced himself from it entirely. I think he made some homophobic comment about it (see "The Celluloid Closet"). Harry Hamlin complained that people get Oscars for playing gay men in film now but he felt that the movie hurt his career. But really, his acting is not great in this movie...the fact that he expels air before every line is irritating.
@kevinlantojack Dear brother!! hopefully you can find and see the entire movie, it really portrays the strong suppressed desires many straight men hold for other men.
Sadly our culture demonizes these God given emotions` but these two me break through the social barriers like Adam and Steve with beautiful horizons.
@globehunter2 After searching I found the movie on one of my youtube pal site
and you are right there are a lot of straight men and women with a lot and I do mean alot of desires for gay and lesbian
you know what that makes me mad people are so fast to say being gay is wrong and they have no right to raise kids ,the ones that are complaining is the ones that have something far worst in the closet
@globehunter2 hahahahahhahahahaahahahahaha I am just loving you strong words Iove it
I am someone that keep to myself ,wishing every day i would have gay or lesbian friends to hang out with cause there is nothing wrong with them or anything to be a shame of
@kevinlantojack May I say my friend` you keep to your self because your very sensitive and private): but deep within you dwells feelings that you can not share with everyone. You can easily hurt and be heart broken. But i feel you meet some gay or lesbean friends to experence the sunshine longing to brighten your life.
Having Gay friends will allow you to enjoy and share the full spectrum of humanity.
This movie really portrayed the masculine and powerful beauty of two Homosexuals making love*this is what str8 society fears is two men enjoying each others God given masculinity. Thank God for creating beautiful men, or what a boring world this would be.
I loved and still love this movie. You can't judge it by 2010 standards. But it certainly made a positive impact on me as a young gay teen. I was able to see the love and complexity, not just the sex. It was responsible and ahead of its' time. Bravo for Harry Hamlin and Michael Ontkean and Kate Jackson. This is a classic!
This was one of the first gay themed movies I ever watched...I dont believe it was about him being bisexual because throughout the movie you see glimpses of his homosexuality..and in the end he begins living with a man..he was gay but was trying to hide it for his father's approval...
I saw the original movie when it came out and Kate Jackson was the wife. The movie was more of a bisexual nature and his curiousity. Kate Jackson tells her husband Ontkean that she doesn't know how to compete with a man for his love. Radical movie in it's days. When Roberta Flack started singing Making Love I kind of choked with emotion. Everytime I hear her song it flashes me back to this movie.
I saw this movie in its first theatrical release, in February of 1982, in New York City. At that first kiss, in a long shot, in a dark corner, which you can barely see, the theater of very cosmopolitan and mostly straight New Yorkers (who knew what they were seeing!) erupted in screams of horror, with people actually running out of the theater screaming, "Oh, my God!" "How disgusting!" "That's sick!"
@arthurkrieck that is terrible that the theater audience you were with reacted so close minded I mean they had to of know what the movie was about and thus still willingly went to see it so why be shocked. they paid to see it. crazy.
i saw this movie once... and I think it´s very good for a movie of that time. It shows two gay characters who is more than "just" gay. The movie is not afraid to show their connection as both sex and love...
I know. the dialogues was passable, but cheesy too. The music drags on like a made for tv movie. The scene takes forever to get over with. And you dont even see their lips touching in the first kiss. Disgusting.
Ontkean and Hamlin were very brave to take these risky roles at this point in our history. I think it stifled their careers in the short term. But they seemed to recover in time. Today this daring scene seems almost quaint. This is an underrated movie and Kate Jackson is spectacular in it. The Roberta Flack (Bacharach-BayerSager) theme song is shatteringly beautiful.
@keithswordsman I agree it seems quite quaint nowadays but I am sure sadly people were shocked back then. I think it is great that these actors took on this role. I thought ontkean was especially cute back then. he had thisboyish quality to them.
@keithswordsman.I remember seeing this film in the movies like it was yesterday.I was 16 years old and in high school.I had not yet come out.I could relate to Zach and all that he was going through...I just watched the dvd again last night.Brilliant performances.Especially by Kate Jackson.....Yes.I actually watched the end credits so I could listen to the song by Roberta Flack.
@vlovesrafa - I was 15 and I could barely breathe and I thought my heart would beat out of my chest at this point in the movie. I had such a physical reaction to it-it was amazing - I really couldn't believe what I was watching. They were - me. I went with my best friend who sorta knew. Anyway, this certainly takes me back and I swear watching this now that my heart sped up, remembering what it was like then.
Hmm.... there's not a version of it by Roberta Flack posted yet on YouTube. It's not the "Feel Like Making Love" song, it's the "Theme from Making Love."
There is a beautiful cover version of the song on YouTube, search: "may's version of roberta flack's making love"
When I first watched this movie as a new release in a college auditorium in 1982, this was the scene where the audience came unglued. Half the crowd gasped or groaned and the other half was too stunned to react.

@kevinlantojack Bravo!! glad you found the movie: I know you enjoyed it.
Note> Your right! so many people are quick to condemn gay men and lisbeans
who them selves have strong fantasies about the very thing they claim to hate.
The closets are full of derailed homosexuals who fear being rejected by the
world they say is normal. These closet doors are afraid to open? because they feel they may like what they have been taught to condemn.
Homosexuality is a complete human emotion.
