I moved to england in the late 70's from Canada. Traded Aerosmith and Kiss albums for Be Bop Deluxe albums. I was having a few beers and remembered this great band.
I remember back in the day hanging out at my local record store (remember those?) when the 1st shipment of "LIVE in the Air Age" dropped. I bought the 1st album out of the box - 1 black & 1 white vinyl LP. You're lucky to have seen em, lrippel!
This is an example of the notion that the truly talented and great musicians arent the ones with hits in the op 10. This is progressive music at its finest and at the helm is a man who's music defined progressive with excellent guitar work
this guy was sheer genius, and albeit prelude to EVH....Eddie took it further, but Bill was there.......one of my all-time-faves! i'll never forget this for it's off the chart quirkiness, and slow, steady, stun!!....Bill went where no one had gone.......still in my personal rotation, and always will be.
This is a classic reminder that all the great players are not superstar entertainers but they are superstars. This album did more to influence my understanding of what a creative mind can do with three chords
Every album he did was great. Modern Music was written about the STRANGE and empty feeling the USA gave Bill. He also missed his girl Jan during this time. His guitar playing was in a class of its own. His music and lyrics has an immortality all of its own. Touche' Bill. I was really BEBOPPED after hearing Modern Music. As a musician I can only say thanks for the influence it gave my playing and writing.
Great excerpt...it's been a long time. In my high school yearbook a fried wrote "imagine me" without Be Bop Deluxe. I'm glad that I had an older friend who got me in to some of this more "outside the lines" music.
This brings back a time gone by when I was a little kid growing up in Ohio. I wish there was some video on Bill Nelson Red Noise - Sound on Sound one of the greatest albums of all time!
Fabulous - also reminds me of my big brother, who is now bedbound with MS but wasn't above some mean air guitaring to the majestic Bill. We still listen to BBD together at his house, and I'm trying to sort out a computer for him to have access to The Youtube to see these clips! Great memories of 1976-78.
There are those of us who will keep your brother in our thoughts & prayers...Be Bop Deluxe will help your brother in these dark times...Godspeed & Good luckk!!
i think i listen to this album more all the time ! modern music reminds me of my oldest brother who was lost to alohol and mental illness. dave loved bill and me being the little bro love bill as well thanks for posting!
If anyone out there has a more complete take of this performance- hell, i'll take another 5 seconds- please post it. I will go to my grave regretting never seeing the band perform side two of Modern Music. Thank you Dagooch!!!
I think it was intended to sound like an American TV theme - an ironic musical commentary on the band's experiences on their first US tour. This tune is called 'Dance of the Uncle Sam Humanoids'. I rest my case, m'lud. (And actually I agree with Selby06 - and always thought it sounded like 'Charlie's Angels' or similar 70s televisual triumph)
"That whole song was a reaction to being here on the first tour and being thrust deep into the armpit of the music business more than anything. A lot of the people who work for the record company are . . . kind of eccentric. They're just empty sort of people. Music business people generally are. It was kind of about that." - Bill Nelson, Wash. DC 1/19/1976
O my Goodness!!! I thought I would never see BBD perform again. I consider them one of my three favorite bands. Saw then 3 times in the 70's and have a live (bootleg?) album that has Adventures in a Yorkshire Landscape which is my favorite piece of music. Where can I get any of this and is Bill ever coming to the US? Thank you so much for these videos!
If your talking about the classic live version from 1977, the bonus trk on "Axe victim" im looking for that video too! Dagooch does all the Be bop vids on here. He might have it!
More genius from one of the best musicians that the UK has ever produced. Saw them in Edinburgh Odeon on this tour. I think they opened with "Orphans of Babylon"
my dad was once the keyboard player for this band(richard brown).

Saw them back in '77 when they opened for Lynyrd Skynyrd in NYC... awesome.

I'll agree, selby06, that they LOOKED a little Love Boat-esque, but the music doesn't remind me of that swill at all. This is great stuff!
