It is refreshing to see a genuine American sensei on YouTube. We see so many bullshido senseis on Expert Village who are just interested in the bucks to be made from Karate as a commercial enterprise. OSU!
@ryanWeap I share your philosophy, sport stifles Karate as moves are banned and different tactics are needed in sport to that of the street. Too many have lost sight of the true beauty of Karate
The island of Okinawa was influenced by many foreign countries. Look on a map, you'll see that Okinawa is in-between several countries, to include China. Okinawa was the travel route to Japan for many years. The people of Okinawa developed an indigenous form of martial arts based on all these influences. They called it "Okinawa Te". It was this type of martial art that eventually became the base for Funakoshi's type of Karate, which he took to mainland Japan in 1922. We call his karate Shotokan.
i thought the chinese taught the okinawans first their style and then the japanese incorperated into their own style of fighting therefore calling it karate.
@superfilipino Karate, Shuri Te or just Te the latter two are Okinawan terms for the art was developed as you say with influence from trade with China. When Okinawa fell under Japanese sovereignty Okinawan Karate adopted Japanese characterisics in order to be accepted in mainland Japan - This is when Judo uniforms were adopted along with the belt system and the more Japanese sounding Karate.
