I hate that Jannetty never got a gimmick outside of being the "other Rocker". Even when he came back in the mid 90's in WCW he was still dressing like a Rocker.
In some ways, Marty was an even more talented in-ring performer than Shawn. Unfortunately, he liked to party TOO much and couldn't keep himself focused. He ruined his own career.

god this brings back such great memories..god i miss being a kid....im SOOOOOOOOOOOO thankful i got to grow up when the wwf was the fucking shit..its god awful now...im just a lucky 1 that grew up in the great generation...once the year 2000 hit everything went to shit..music..tv..ect..thank you WWF!!!!!!! for making my childhood so much fun and entertaining..and wcw..monday nights were great...7p.m till 11p.m just fun bad ass entertaining wrestling..fuck u vince for killing it all
Damn, this brings back memories. My family just got cable TV and this was the FIRST episode of RAW I had ever seen. I had grown up on tapes of Wrestlemania and the occasional Saturday Night Main Event. I hadn't seen the breakup of the rockers and I got to see this. It was insane - Shawn gave a great interview and Marty seemed to be really heated. This was the start of the WWF great years.
Marty was older, but Shawn seemed to close the gap pretty quick, even before the split. Compare Shawn Michaels in 1992 vs. 1988 and it's a big evolution. Same with the 1996 version of Shawn Michaels vs. 1992. I never quite saw that with Marty. I mean even in this match, the mic skills are average, the charimsa when playing to the crowd is lacking. Very good wrestler, without a doubt, but lacking that extra something special that sets the HBKs and Bret Harts apart.
Marty Jannetty was supposed to get the bigger singles push at the time of the Rockers' breakup, but his personal demons were ultimately his undoing.I think a match between him & Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania VIII would have sent PPV buyrates through the roof alone, but that ended up being one of the worst WrestleManias ever,in my opinion.
Had Michaels not been the excellent heel that he was and not done his best to put his former tag team partner over, nobody would have gotten behind Jannetty.
Watching this video it becomes apparent why Jannetty never experienced the same levels of success that Michaels experienced after the Rockers' break up. As he confronted the man who had superkicked him through a window, what should have been an epic moment instead comes off as anticlimactic due to Jannetty's wooden delivery. It's obvious that McMahon had to step in to compensate for Marty's lack of ability and intensity on the mic.
how come nobody has marty vs shawn from raw during 1996?i remember they wrestled, but i missed it and have never gotten to see that match.it surprises me its nowhere on here.
Nothing like an old school WWF circus atmosphere. Today's WWE wrestle waste environment has no smoke, no flame and no fire. Just a lot of spayed and neutered, harmless ham and eggers.
@RossLeyshon I was more of a Marty Janetty fan due to his actual wrestling abilities (better than Shawn Michaels if you ask me). S.M. went on to sell to the people which lead him to a good carreer. Whereas Marty was not much of a seller--well not like how S.M. sold his character.
Martys a v good wrestler and people only use that as and insult because shawn was the break out star in the tag team and marty just stoped and came back and would stop again thus not having as good as a carear he could have.
@dixonmixin10 yeah, Shawn has all the charisma, both had equal athletiscm, but IMO, Janetty was a better technical wrestler. But as the Rockers, they were greater than the sum of their parts and had the potential to be the greatest tag team of all time. No tag team that i've seen has had the same synchronous energy that they had as a team. Just too bad they were so short lived.
Marty was a great wrestler but i still have to say shawn was and still is better but Marty should have been a big star its sad how shawn went big and marty went downhill both should have went to the top
There had definitely been some legitimate heat behind the scenes with Shawn Michaels & Marty Jannetty before their onscreen split-up,but nowhere near the extent it was portrayed when Michaels tossed Jannetty through the Barber Shop window.
I seem to remember reading somewhere that a LOT of the guys in the locker room at the time thought Marty was the better wrestler, but for some reason Shawn was the one put over. Not sure how true that was, bu tit is an interesting what if. Just imagine Marty going on to do all the angles HBK did?
@ILoveDXB Hey that is your opinion & you are entitled to it, but the Road Warriors/Legion of Doom won EVERYTHING there is to win in wrestling. They revolutionized tag team wrestling. I liked the Rockers too, but I can think of about 4 or 5 teams off the top of my head I would rate higher than them. But hey that it is just my opinion. Different storkes for different folks.
1:05 it says "until shawn superkicked marty through the barbershop window" he didnt kick him thru it, he kicked him, and then threw him thru the window
That factoid about Michaels "super kicking" Jannetty through the Barbershop window is incorrect. Michaels super kicked him (to the floor) and then picked him up and threw him threw it.
Jannetty revisited to fight what, 3 times? Each time was less exciting 'cuz they had him be a jobber, particularly against the Miz. He's still fit & spry. He could've been something bigger. Perhaps not as huge as HBK cuz of his Showstopper theme, but letting go of Marty's just wasting talent.
There's a reason why this was considered the match of the year for 1993. Jannetty and Michaels tore the house down with this match. Also, seeing Bill Alfonso as the ref is a nice touch too.
lol cameras were always pretty good quality, its just that WWE preserved their footage well while other people haven't.... and remember this is only youtube, the quality on the DVD this came from is probably a little bit better
1:41-1:42 when Vince tries to take the microphone (RIGHT after Shawn says "He's not prepared to wrestle") HBK has this look of PANIC on his face @ that moment trying to stop Vince from talking.
Shawn saying "No no. I can't, no" and Vince interrupting saying "WOULD U?" lol trying to back out after talking so much shit. Love it!
Yes, Marty was considered the one with more wrestling potential, but SHAWN was the one with more personality on the mic, and the spoils go to the one with the ability to speaketh and wrestle..
sad marty will always be considered as a loser. he couldve been great as shawn michaels. omg, i remember him coming back and lost in 2 minutes. he mustve been really desprite for cash. and god damn he got old.
actually Mr.Perfect asked Vince to let Marty return, because Marty supposdly got fired after their rumble match because shawn told vince,it was Marty's fault, their match wasnt good and claimed its because Marty was drunk....
It turned out, that Marty wasnt drunk and Vince was pissed and agreed with Mr.Perfect not ony to bring Jannetty back but also have him have the title.
Marty Jannetty talked about this in his shoot interview!
Marty was VERY good in the ring maybe even better then shawn...but as far as building heat and mic skills, Shawn was ten times better. Both great in the ring, but you need to be able to do everything if you wanna be a main event guy.
@nickloks jannetty couldnt lace shawns boots, hes just lucky shawn had enough heart to beg vince to throw him a bone. shawn michaels the best ever period
that's the problem with wrestling nowadays, all the fans are educated so much it's hard to get over! back then it was easy to get over but everyone knows about politicking that goes on, have so much high demands for charisma and wrestling ability that it's hard to get guys over!
This is the week before Diesel came in. Shawn lost here, but won the belt back at a house show in Albany, one hour and 15 mins. from my home town of Herkimer, NY. I saw one of the first RAW's in the fall of 1994 when the show was barely a year old.
@DominoRyder. i totally agree. Marty was 1 heck of a worker. His inring ability was superb. And it is a complete lack of respect for WWE writers or whoever is responsible for THE MARTY JANNETTY comments idea made in the past. From what I understand, he had alot of personal issues that he was dealing with while he was an active wrestler. If it had not been for these issues, I truly believe that Marty would' ve been BIG in the WWF. We are all human and shit happens!! Marty is a legend to me.
but what if, just what if they had chosen Marty to throw HBK through the barbershop window? HBK would have been the sympathetic babyface and probably still wouldve been a star, but marty may have made it too, he was on drugs though
Marty Jannetty was quite talented. Of course Michaels was much better, but Jannetty was a good performer. I think if he was pushed enough, he could've done a thing with the Intercontinental title after this.
Jennety doesnt really have the mic persona to b a huge singles talent... he dam sure has the in ring ability, but i think the intercontanental title is about as far as he would have made it... dont get me wrong he could have improved vastly, but and hbk, he will never be!
Fair enough, I agree his mic skills were sup par at best. However, I think they should've put the belt on Jannetty, and to keep him there, put Bobby Heenan with Jannetty to bring his mic skills up a bit, and I think he would've been a very good IC champion. Better than he was anyway. And the Shawn Michaels IC belt wasn't that bad. It was just the original but with a white strap. What's so bad about that?
Michaels once stated that if Jannetty didn't get fired twice (maybe more), the two could have wrestled each other at both Wrestlemania 8 and 9, Jannetty probably would have won at WM IX i bet
I have always seen that Marty Jannetty was more talented than Shawn Michaels, but because Michaels was more of a stable wrestler than Jannetty, we never got to see what he could do as a single's wrestler inside the ring!
A Guy like Shawn wanted to get to the top and basically was wiling to steamroller his friend to do so (Kayfabe), hence the attack on the set of the Barbershop!
i honestly think jannetty is a better wrestler

This is the week before Diesel came in. Shawn lost here, but won the belt back at a house show in Albany, one hour and 15 mins. from my home town of Herkimer, NY. I saw one of the first RAW's in the fall of 1994 when the show was barely a year old.

shawn became a much better worker. He's real mechanical here, just putting himself in place for stuff instead of flowing naturally to it

Did you bring your wrestling gear -LOL.

Marty was so awesome then. Sad that now people in WWE insult each other by calling each other Marty Jannettys
DominoRyder 2 years ago 20
@DominoRyder. i totally agree. Marty was 1 heck of a worker. His inring ability was superb. And it is a complete lack of respect for WWE writers or whoever is responsible for THE MARTY JANNETTY comments idea made in the past. From what I understand, he had alot of personal issues that he was dealing with while he was an active wrestler. If it had not been for these issues, I truly believe that Marty would' ve been BIG in the WWF. We are all human and shit happens!! Marty is a legend to me.

@DominoRyder they should call each other David Sammartino. Now Bruno's kid, that was a joke if there ever was one

Because it's quite dangerous.

but what if, just what if they had chosen Marty to throw HBK through the barbershop window? HBK would have been the sympathetic babyface and probably still wouldve been a star, but marty may have made it too, he was on drugs though

Marty Jannetty was quite talented. Of course Michaels was much better, but Jannetty was a good performer. I think if he was pushed enough, he could've done a thing with the Intercontinental title after this.
stevestoner13 2 years ago
Jennety doesnt really have the mic persona to b a huge singles talent... he dam sure has the in ring ability, but i think the intercontanental title is about as far as he would have made it... dont get me wrong he could have improved vastly, but and hbk, he will never be!
Dwiz316 2 years ago
The thing is, in the business you need both Ring AND Mic skills to truly get over.
And that wasn't a bad customized IC belt, It may have seemed a bit poncy but it cheered it up a bit!
Hulk2k6 2 years ago
Fair enough, I agree his mic skills were sup par at best. However, I think they should've put the belt on Jannetty, and to keep him there, put Bobby Heenan with Jannetty to bring his mic skills up a bit, and I think he would've been a very good IC champion. Better than he was anyway. And the Shawn Michaels IC belt wasn't that bad. It was just the original but with a white strap. What's so bad about that?

i like marty's sweater

Michaels once stated that if Jannetty didn't get fired twice (maybe more), the two could have wrestled each other at both Wrestlemania 8 and 9, Jannetty probably would have won at WM IX i bet
Bull1908 2 years ago
I have always seen that Marty Jannetty was more talented than Shawn Michaels, but because Michaels was more of a stable wrestler than Jannetty, we never got to see what he could do as a single's wrestler inside the ring!
txwrestling1989 2 years ago 4
jannetty more talented then shawn michaels?? rofl that's funny

kirkwanglers32 2 years ago
A Guy like Shawn wanted to get to the top and basically was wiling to steamroller his friend to do so (Kayfabe), hence the attack on the set of the Barbershop!

The Rockers were an incredibly innovative tag-team. These guys changed the whole game.
I always wished Marty Jannetty could have had a successful singles career like Shawn Michaels.
Both were superb pro wrestling performers.
