I think it is funny that people say the Iranian guy should get it for working harder but don't point out how he was stalling after that failed take down for 20 seconds and then at 3:24 where he is breathing heavy and the ref has to tell him to get up. Exerting energy more rapidly shouldn't give someone a victory.

@Rothiman You are right Jadidi did score first so I did some reading up on the old school rules of freestyle... the ones I posted are the new ones... but I guess if the match ends in a tie it goes into overtime and if no one scores in the overtime it goes to a coin flip... I guess Angle won the flip... there is still LOTS of controversy surrounding this decision in the end Angle won and that's that!
Maybe Jadidi go screwed, maybe he didn't. I don't know enough about wrestling to say. I do know about boxing though, and I know Roy Jones got absolutely screwed over years back in Seoul. Anything that requires judges to determine a winner is just too open for controversy in my opinion. It's easy enough to just have a point system and have the competitors continue until there's a clear winner. It makes logical sense and it cuts down on controversy.

Maybe Jadidi go screwed, maybe he didn't. I don't know enough about wrestling to say. I do know about boxing though, and I know Roy Jones got absolutely screwed over years back in Seoul. Anything that requires judges to determine a winner is just too open for controversy in my opinion. It's easy enough to just have a point system and have the competitors continue until there's a clear winner. It makes logical sense and it cuts down on controversy.

Kurt Angle won because he scored first in freestyle if the match ends in a tie it goes into criteria (hence how he won by criteria) and that is im pretty sure the third or fourth criteria

@dodgerguy1981 you could argue Angle was more aggresive, but i feel that there should be an alternive way of determining a winner other then a criteria, i think it makes the match 100 times more boring knowing that they can end in a 1-1 tie, rather then someone going hard to just make it over the top.

What first opening? The judges decided the winner. There were no points awarded. I never said wrestling is not an important sport in the U.S. but in terms of popularity & national tradition, wrestling in the U.S. is nothing compared to wrestling in Iran, Russia, Bulgaria, Cuba, Georgia, Turkey & so on.

Compare that to 5 attempts/initiations by Jadidi AND the fact that Angle was grounded by the ref for being passive & not wrestling & you still can't justify the decision. Although both wrestlers scored a point, Kurt scored the last point in the period, giving him a win for that period. The other periods were 0-0 ties. So it seems that is why Kurt won.
Jadidi thought he should have won because of a takedown, but Kurt had initiated the move, so it didn't count. Kurt thought HE should have gotten a point or two because of Jadidi's excessive stalling.
All in all, I think the referees made the correct decision, for whatever reason.
