With Jazz, you can play what you feel. If you want to play A child is born like that, GO! You musn't play slowly because it's a ballad, you play what you want to play !
1) why is the pianist the only "ruiner" of Child is Born? I guess nobody on the bandstand tried to play a lullaby, first of all Diane..
2) it is an arrangment of this tune! there are tons of standards written as ballad, and often played up tempo! And I'm sure that if Diane told the pianist to back off he would, because it's not some office, they are HER band, and so she decides if something please her or not
I see a lot of commentary expressing how ego ridden this Pianist is and how he is basically ruining a sublime lullaby. I agree! But I am 100 percent sure that if Miss Reeves were to check him with a look or with words after the show...It would get back to all of us that she is a diva and a bitch..That is why this Pianist can get away with stuff like this! Because women are still not allowed to speak up...
The pianist needs to know when to back off when the divine Dianne is singing! It's way too busy and chaotic sounding. It's supposed to be a lullaby, yea right.
As you say, wow ! But I'd like to listen to the beginning of the tune, to understand how they come to that with Thad's subtle harmonies. We can hear D singing My favorite things and I'm a little surprised by this afro blue feeling. Why not ?
I know, but go easy on erotica008. I think s/he only meant that dianne did the same effect that rihanna does in "umbrella." I don't think any comparison of talent was meant -- ain't no comparison. But it is interesting that all the musics in the African diaspora continue to be in dialogue with each other, so you still get echoes and overlaps and borrowings. I think it's neat. but, of course, I've bought all Dianne's albums and only a couple Rihanna singles!
I love Peter Martin also. I met him mid-90s; he was touring with D. Reeves, but also played for Joshua Redman near Santa Rosa, CA. As Katt Williams would say "he's the SHIT!!!"

The beauty of Thad Jones' composition is lost in the ego of this pianist. It is a gorgeous, tender, lullaby, not some rock inspired junk.
