You have no idea what you are talking about, lady. (By the way--as someone who rarely eats fresh veggies myself, I can't use veggies fast enough for my rats alone, so I usually give them a little bit of what I do eat and supplement with baby food. Works just as well.)
@MixMasterLuffy Huh, I've never tried that. I'm not much of a vegetable eater myself. So instead of feeding them veggies you give them veggie baby food? Like peas, or carrots flavors? It's the same thing right? lol
@MasterOranda Yeah, I give them baby food because I don't wanna waste my money buying veg that will just go bad for two rats, last time I bought stuff I wouldn't eat it ended up going bad. I give them lettuce (not iceburg) and broccoli and other veggies I do eat though too, but that's maybe once weekly.
@MasterOranda Also I try to get the ones that are two flavors in one, like peas and carrots or carrots and apples. My rats love them even though they sound nasty LOL--I just want them to get a variety ^^
3. Mixed grain diets nutritionally incomplete rat picking out only the pieces that they prefer
4. Lab blocks are considered to be one of the most nutritious sources of staple or base diet
5. Fresh fruits and vegetables are a must for ratties
6. Feeding your rats, blocks = 80% of their diet and fresh fruits, vegies and other(such as hard boiled eggs) = 15% and treats = 5% this mix is nutritious and will make your ratty very happy =)
actually rats can eat people food any kind of food.......and every rat owner has their own way of feeding their rat like me i feed my rat yogurt they love yogurt and chesses (white chesse)
@NoirHammer It's pretty common for rats to develop tumors and fatty lumps. Part of it is due to the lack of good breeding. The fatty lumps come from fat, of course. Most bags of rat feed have a lot of filler in them, just like any other type of pet food. That's why I don't just feed him a mix.
i think i miss- spoke what i might was that rats do need a varied diet because if board they wont eat but the base of that diet should be lab blocks or a pelleted food because that has everything thay need, like vitamins, minerals, protean, and grains all in the right balance!
this advice is wrong, I'm not an expert but here's my rant.
lab blocks and veggies are all you need cheerios and crackers are just treats, some table scraps are OK but rat food is best! mixes aren't good, rats only eat things they like and don't get everything needed! cheese isn't good and most rats don't like cheese! NEVER: give dog food to rats it makes there poop smell awful!!! about comments, rats ARE pets, if we love and care for them then we can each choose our own way of doing it!
WTF??? All this is food is for a useless pet RAT?!? - don't even bother to feed it, just throw it in a bucket of water and drown it. Start spending your money on feeding less fortunate PEOPLE as there are a lot hungry ones out there right now.
Only in America would someone be feeding a pet rat a banquet of food while multitudes of people who lost their jobs go hungry....this country has truly gone mad.
Go back and read my post again as it went right over the top of your head you moron. The point is that there are many PEOPLE going hungry right now through no fault of their own and you boobs are feeding rats these banquet meals. Take the money that you are spending feeding a worthless rat and donate it to a local food bank and feed some people instead. RATS don't deserve a damn thing you twisted bastard.
@CaneFu Go back and read this they are domestic they cant feed themselves and I will no take my money to a food bank and rats are worth more than you you are a worthless piece of scum rots deserve everything we have you retard
@CaneFu I amount of food I feed my pet rat wouldn't even feed one person. If I stopped feeding my pet rat that wouldn't solve world hunger and it would be neglect and considered abuse. Last time I heard, caring for animals was a good thing, regardless of what kind of animal.
My friend gave me his rat. Its one years old! I can't afford a home for it so I keep him in a jar. It is such a big jar! Its a pickle jar my mom gave me. If I put another rat in there with I get babys?
@jadeslpsfamily DUDE!! get a fucking cage! And if you put another rat of the same gender, no baby rats. You put a rat of the opposite gender; baby rats. You cannot keep a full grown rat in a jar unless that jar has 2 sqft of space with things to climb on! Which I highly doubt! You're going to kill the poor thing!
@SillyNerdify I was just joking. I have a big wire cage. It also has 2 platforms and tons of room. They have 3 feet on the bottem. And a foot of space on each platform. I was just joking. I wouldn't torture a rat like that. My rats are older than 2 years too. And my friend didn't give my rats either. I was just joking.
my little Maxi should i feed him puppy food or kitten food just a baby if so im feeding him iams puppy/kitten food and is it normal 2 put inside the cage fluffy squrriel (sm.dog toy)mines is missing his family....he sleeps beside it underneath its tail awe. lol...
Why does she keep saying rats only live about 18 months to 2 years? If kept healthy in a loving environment with a varied diet, then they should live much longer.
@shinx i always heard rats can live up to 15 yrs - 20yrs
thats when i worked at petcetera on upperjames & rymal rd.& the lady who said it had rats of her own..... ya 18 months 2 yrs up to 4 yrs i will just have find out 4 myself i have a cream hooded rat name Maxi after soul calibur.....do u recommened puppy food when a baby or adult dog food can u get back
@Dawn6004 I haven't had a rat in a long time, but I'm actually adopting two little girls in September. I've been doing some research on food, and from what I can tell you should be feeding them lab blocks, but you can also feed them certain fruits and veggies. I do know from experience that they will eat (and will WANT to eat) anything that you eat. Mostly avoid really fatty foods and don't feed them anything too sweet. Cat food will have more protein than dog food, so keep that in mind too.
@attackbeaver49285 A) there is no need to use an ablist insult in ANY situation. B) What she's saying is very valid. Rats need a varied diet, not just the bag of food you buy at PetSmart. Veggies, greens, and fruit are all very good things for ratties to have alongside proteins like dog food pieces, some occasional chicken, bone marrow, eggs, etc in small quantities. A bit of cheese as an occasional treat won't hurt. C) No one cares about your age/gender. Stop waving it around like a badge.
It's not the most thorough advice but it's not that horrible, either.
I think many women on here are just jealous of her rack and body, that's the way most women are, always looking for a way to dog on some women that looks better then them. Honestly.
Seed mixes do not make rats sick like someone had said. Seed mixes are not nutritionally balanced as a complete diet but can be given to rats as a treat or added to their main diet for a bit of variety. And most rats from pet stores live around 2 years (not to say that can't live longer but a lot of poorly bred rats are not genetically strong and may be prone to tumors, respiratory problems, etc.).
Rats should be having a high quality lab block such as Oxbow Regal rat food, HT blocks, or Mizuri. Dog food is not suitable, and will have too much protein in it. Unless you are following Suebee's mix, then you should be using the lab blocks.Seed mixes are NOT appropriate diets for rats. Fresh fruit and vegetables should be given daily. Cheese should NOT.
@RatsMyHeart actually, in 1 of her videos she says give cheese as treats. however, i agree she should have said something about the salt. dont be a jerk, she shouldn't be removed. she tries her best
humm all my rats get 4 years old and i get them fat i read that getting them fat (not to fat) will make em live longer and my rats is always helthy and they live long just past 4 years! and its all of em.
they don't live 1 - 2 years. thats how long a mouse lives. they live 2-3 years but can live longer. you should feed them pellets or cubes made for rats and not as many vegetables.
i had a pet rat once and i fed her what it says to feed them in the video, and that rat died at an early age...a few years later i got a new rat and i fed it meat, rat food, human food, left overs...and pretty much everything else i eat, that rat is now currently 3 and a half years old and i am expecting him to live to about 5 years.
pft all mine live up to 4-5 years.. I breed them, and breed for longevity..pet store rats are known to die early because of where they are born, MILLS!!.. to much greens can cause digestion upset, Lab Blocks, and greens 2x a week is good enough for rats.. but you don't have to feed them all that every day.
broccolie: bad, cuccumbers: bad, cheese: bad, Bananas: bad, asparagus: bad. everything i mentioned should be treats ONLY. nmot daily food! green foods are gassy, and hurts their tiny tummies. cheese has milk, wich will also hurt their tummies, anything that it watery can give them diareah..... i'll stick to protien blocks, mealworms, and vegetables that wont make them sick.... ok, they can occasionaly have that too...... its jut so hard to deny those cute little faces!
So whats a food thats safe that can help them gain weight? I would love sum advice thats SAFE my poor girls are so hyper an always runnin around with food in there mouth and playing on there hunders of toys i really dont think they sleep lol the only time i have seen them stand still is when there getting a drink or pickin something up
@shord1989 Well one, females are very active so don't let this alarm you. Two, you should check and see if they need any extra weight. If they are on a good diet (NOT LIKE THE DIET IN THIS HORRIBLE VIDEO), then they should have a good muscle mass. I suggest feeding Harlan Lab Blocks to your girls, but if you want to help them gain weight, (if they need it) then you can try baby food. Avoid anything with dairy though, rats cannot digest lactose.
@shord1989 You shouldn't make a rat gain weight purposefully unless directed to do so by a vet. Female rats are naturally hyper. In fact, my tilly is running around my bed right now (she just tried to eat a pop tart wrapper XD)
@franklongbottom1632 I agree you shouldn't make them gain weight to be lazy, BUT, I really think you should have them a little .. pudgy.
Rats lose weight insanely fast. SO SO much in such a short time. First time rat owners, which I assume shord1989 is, [and I don't mean that rudely, but it should be known that females are crazy X3] may not know that.
So Having rats on the roly poly side, with a safe amount of extra weight is always a good thing in the event of any rattie sickness.
This woman is NOT an expert! Don't feed your rats cheese because all rats are lactose intolerant so too much dairy is bad for them, not to mention it will make them overweight. Dog biscuits also aren't good because they're too high in protein. They're fine occasionally, but shouldn't be part of your rats' everyday diet! Also most pet shop mixes like the one in this video contain dried corn (which contains toxic molds) and alfalfa (which rats can't digest). Lab blocks are a much better option.
You should state what kind of dog food because some is unhealthy for rats. Plus, cheese should ONLY be as a treat and never as an everyday meal. Learn more and stop giving out stupid advice.
@man0wce well banana is OK if you a rat gets ill.... and don't want to take it'S meds (you can put it inside a little piece) but you are right, it'S just a very very special threat because they get real fat if they get to many of it
Woman, rats can't have too much extra's.. you should give the basic ratfood and than bits of things like fruit and stuff.
And you forgot to mention what they absolutely shouldn't eat, like things that contain much sugar and fat. Mention everything when you make an information video. There are enough people already who don't know how to take care of animals and still buy them.
We had a rat that lived 6 years... ONLY fed NATURAL (not organic) fresh greens and raw veggies & fruits, including wheat grass, broccoli, assorted sprouts, almonds, carrots, assorted fruits. homemade flax crackers, NEVER gave her any dairy other than hard boiled eggs...NO processed animal food (ie; cat/dog foods) nor rodent block or mixes... Supplemented w/Digestive Enzymes... She did ultimately succumb to a tumor but ONLY AFTER she went to a new home and they switched her diet completely!!
@CatMaster87932 Actually, you should gain more knowledge of cancerous tumors before you make such a statement. Diet absolutely has a huge influence in the equation. :o)
I feed my rats these same foods, except for dog food. I'd rather give them fresh meat, but I don't feed them all the types at the same time. That could get boring for them. So a little bit of this & a little bit of that each day. Nicely done.
@ImHereForMJ dog food is a complete diet. Just add a few seeds and a bit of fruit and a dog buiscuit maye. And a occasionaly a stick to chew on from a fruit tree, willow, or maple to help gnaw the teeth down and your all set. Dog food has good oils for the coat and good fatty acids. Certain dogs foods are better than others. Select a less in calories and fat. Some dog foods have fruit and buffalo. Others have lamp and salmon. Choose the best one and your all set. Dog food isn't bad. Just salty..
@Animalinfermation Seeds are really fatty and my rat doesn't like to chew on wood items. Also, my rat doesn't need more oils or fatty acids. He's semi-hairless and doesn't have the fur for the oil. He gets enough oil and fatty acids from his regular, non-dog food diet. I'm sure if people could afford real meat over crunchy dog food they would because it's more natural and healthier. Dog food isn't completely bad, but we all have our preferences.
@ImHereForMJ how should I know your rat was a semi hair. And sometimes I do give her meat. A rat should have a variety. I'm giving you a good example of a good diet. I never said you had to follow it. Whatever
@Animalinfermation Seeds are great as a treat! They are definitely better than other un-natural treats. I agree with you that rats should have a variety and I do provide him with a good diet. I just prefer not feeding him blocks or dog food. Would I want blocks or dog food every day all day? No. That's a cheap route anyways. Let's just agree that we love our rats.
this is very fat information to be giving to people.cheese is very high in sodium and fat plus if you give rats a whole wunk of grains they will get picky.i highly suggest that you should just give your rat kashi crunch cereal and dog food for large breed.its simple and it has all the nutrience your rat needs.kashi crunch cereal has all the stuff in it that you offer in grains but they are all in one so the rat cant pick.there.thats the real diet of a domestic rat
@jadeslpsfamily exactly. Fat information? oh you must mean bad information.luv the last line. Hehe. My rat Ezmo was super picky when we bought seed mix. With dog food now we have no problem I'm happy to report. The kashi crunch cereal is a little expensive so we just give her a fruit tree twig and some fruit is that okay? The dog food she diets on is really good I've checked the ingredients and everything
Ok people listen up. I did everything she told me to do and my rat lived for 4 years ok? Shes not stupid and obviously she knows what shes doing because look at her happy rats! I think if they are HAPPY and STRESS FREE with a clean cage. WHATS WRONG WITH THAT!? My rat was happy, loved and fed lots of fresh fruits and veggies. And she was happy as hell for four years. So i like how shes raising her rats. Good job hun! :)
Rats should be fed a block that is between 14-18% protein, low in fat. Harlan Tekland, Oxbow, Living World Hamster Extrusion are all excellent foods. Having a steady diet of seed mixture, or mixed homemade foods is not health because rats pick out what they want to eat and won't eat the other stuff and have a lacking in their diet of nutrients. You want low sodium, low sugar, low protein and low fat for a healthy rat.
Before I even watch the video... Rats are omnivores... look it up, pretty simple, they eat EVERYTHING... Just like us. Of course vegetables are better then burgers, just as it is for us humans... simple right?
CAN I FEED THEM RICE ?AND POTATO?

they don't live 1 - 2 years. thats how long a mouse lives. they live 2-3 years but can live longer. you should feed them pellets or cubes made for rats and not as many vegetables.
DiscoPuppies 11 months ago
i had a pet rat once and i fed her what it says to feed them in the video, and that rat died at an early age...a few years later i got a new rat and i fed it meat, rat food, human food, left overs...and pretty much everything else i eat, that rat is now currently 3 and a half years old and i am expecting him to live to about 5 years.

what about a mouse
msAGfan 11 months ago
pft all mine live up to 4-5 years.. I breed them, and breed for longevity..pet store rats are known to die early because of where they are born, MILLS!!.. to much greens can cause digestion upset, Lab Blocks, and greens 2x a week is good enough for rats.. but you don't have to feed them all that every day.

@hollaydude Um. No. I'd say 3 years average for a rat, 4+ if you are very lucky. Some of the best cared for rats can pass at 2.5 years.

broccolie: bad, cuccumbers: bad, cheese: bad, Bananas: bad, asparagus: bad. everything i mentioned should be treats ONLY. nmot daily food! green foods are gassy, and hurts their tiny tummies. cheese has milk, wich will also hurt their tummies, anything that it watery can give them diareah..... i'll stick to protien blocks, mealworms, and vegetables that wont make them sick.... ok, they can occasionaly have that too...... its jut so hard to deny those cute little faces!

TheBestB123 1 year ago
@TheBestB123 She say 18 months to 2 years because her rats probably kill them self when they reach that age. :P
ToxicFearful 1 year ago
@TheBestB123 Actually no. Rats USUALLY live 1 year 8 months to 2 years. When people say this, they're talking store bought/feeder rats.
Very well bred rats without common sicknesses and a good family history, which is hard to find for ratties, can live 3, MAYBE 4 years.
Then again, one of my boys lived 3 years and 4 months, and he was a feeder.

So whats a food thats safe that can help them gain weight? I would love sum advice thats SAFE my poor girls are so hyper an always runnin around with food in there mouth and playing on there hunders of toys i really dont think they sleep lol the only time i have seen them stand still is when there getting a drink or pickin something up
shord1989 1 year ago
@shord1989 Well one, females are very active so don't let this alarm you. Two, you should check and see if they need any extra weight. If they are on a good diet (NOT LIKE THE DIET IN THIS HORRIBLE VIDEO), then they should have a good muscle mass. I suggest feeding Harlan Lab Blocks to your girls, but if you want to help them gain weight, (if they need it) then you can try baby food. Avoid anything with dairy though, rats cannot digest lactose.
Maggiepape 1 year ago
@shord1989 You shouldn't make a rat gain weight purposefully unless directed to do so by a vet. Female rats are naturally hyper. In fact, my tilly is running around my bed right now (she just tried to eat a pop tart wrapper XD)
franklongbottom1632 1 year ago
@franklongbottom1632 I agree you shouldn't make them gain weight to be lazy, BUT, I really think you should have them a little .. pudgy.
Rats lose weight insanely fast. SO SO much in such a short time. First time rat owners, which I assume shord1989 is, [and I don't mean that rudely, but it should be known that females are crazy X3] may not know that.
So Having rats on the roly poly side, with a safe amount of extra weight is always a good thing in the event of any rattie sickness.
shinocicada 1 year ago
This woman is NOT an expert! Don't feed your rats cheese because all rats are lactose intolerant so too much dairy is bad for them, not to mention it will make them overweight. Dog biscuits also aren't good because they're too high in protein. They're fine occasionally, but shouldn't be part of your rats' everyday diet! Also most pet shop mixes like the one in this video contain dried corn (which contains toxic molds) and alfalfa (which rats can't digest). Lab blocks are a much better option.
TheYoghurt42 1 year ago 2
cheese and dog food should be for treats not foods. -_- you're gonna have a chubby rat

You should state what kind of dog food because some is unhealthy for rats. Plus, cheese should ONLY be as a treat and never as an everyday meal. Learn more and stop giving out stupid advice.
AnimalAndPetExpert 1 year ago
shall they really have food all the time? wont they eat to they die then?
hubertgreen 1 year ago
proper REAL rat diet:
EVERY day:
fruits and vegetables like carrots, cucmber, bell peppers, apples, bananas, strawberrys (look up for food a rat MUST NOT eat, for example cherrys)
normal rat food from a store (watch out for rat food with too much nuts and sunflower seeds, they have to much proteins)
food where they can bite their teeth off: raw spagetti, wood from a tree;rodent stones from the pet store hardly work
twice a week: cheese, whale nuts, whole boiled egg, yogurt
rattenpack101 1 year ago
@rattenpack101 wait they can have raw spagetti?
ElghansAnimals101 1 year ago
@ElghansAnimals101 yes, mine loved them, i couldn't sleep at night while they ate them ^^ ; also you can give them hard bread
btw: NO broccoli or other cauliflower things, NO onions, NO oranges, lemons
common good advice: don't trust that woman, i disagree in lots of points with her in general
rattenpack101 1 year ago
cheese is "NO NO" for rats. and bananas too, that's food is too fat. and why do you give them so much food?!
man0wce 1 year ago

She did ultimately succumb to a tumor but ONLY AFTER she went to a new home and they switched her diet completely!!
kastnmagic 1 year ago
@kastnmagic Tumors are not caused by diet...
CatMaster87932 1 year ago
@CatMaster87932 Actually, you should gain more knowledge of cancerous tumors before you make such a statement. Diet absolutely has a huge influence in the equation. :o)
kastnmagic 1 year ago
I feed my rats these same foods, except for dog food. I'd rather give them fresh meat, but I don't feed them all the types at the same time. That could get boring for them. So a little bit of this & a little bit of that each day. Nicely done.
ImHereForMJ 1 year ago
@ImHereForMJ dog food is a complete diet. Just add a few seeds and a bit of fruit and a dog buiscuit maye. And a occasionaly a stick to chew on from a fruit tree, willow, or maple to help gnaw the teeth down and your all set. Dog food has good oils for the coat and good fatty acids. Certain dogs foods are better than others. Select a less in calories and fat. Some dog foods have fruit and buffalo. Others have lamp and salmon. Choose the best one and your all set. Dog food isn't bad. Just salty..
Animalinfermation 3 months ago
@Animalinfermation Seeds are really fatty and my rat doesn't like to chew on wood items. Also, my rat doesn't need more oils or fatty acids. He's semi-hairless and doesn't have the fur for the oil. He gets enough oil and fatty acids from his regular, non-dog food diet. I'm sure if people could afford real meat over crunchy dog food they would because it's more natural and healthier. Dog food isn't completely bad, but we all have our preferences.
ImHereForMJ 3 months ago
@ImHereForMJ I said a FEW seeds you can't have a fat- free diet
Animalinfermation 3 months ago
@ImHereForMJ how should I know your rat was a semi hair. And sometimes I do give her meat. A rat should have a variety. I'm giving you a good example of a good diet. I never said you had to follow it. Whatever
Animalinfermation 3 months ago
@Animalinfermation Seeds are great as a treat! They are definitely better than other un-natural treats. I agree with you that rats should have a variety and I do provide him with a good diet. I just prefer not feeding him blocks or dog food. Would I want blocks or dog food every day all day? No. That's a cheap route anyways. Let's just agree that we love our rats.

plus kashi crunch cereal has even more grains you need
jadeslpsfamily 1 year ago
this is very fat information to be giving to people.cheese is very high in sodium and fat plus if you give rats a whole wunk of grains they will get picky.i highly suggest that you should just give your rat kashi crunch cereal and dog food for large breed.its simple and it has all the nutrience your rat needs.kashi crunch cereal has all the stuff in it that you offer in grains but they are all in one so the rat cant pick.there.thats the real diet of a domestic rat
jadeslpsfamily 1 year ago 2

Be very careful about about diet
You want low sodium, low sugar, low protein and low fat for a healthy rat.
rattieslove 1 year ago
Before I even watch the video... Rats are omnivores... look it up, pretty simple, they eat EVERYTHING... Just like us. Of course vegetables are better then burgers, just as it is for us humans... simple right?

Dog food is for dogs. It's not made for a rat's diet. Parrot food is alright but rats need rat food because it's made for a rat's diet.
